In Wonder Woman 1984's mid-credits scene, we learned that Asteria, the Amazon who stayed behind in a bid to buy her fellow Amazons time to escape to Themyscira, was still alive and well in the world of man.

Played by legendary Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter, the suggestion seemed to be that she'd appear in Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3 (perhaps helping Diana Prince finally return home).

That movie was scrapped when DC Studios was formed and, as best we can tell, there are no plans for it to happen in the new DCU. Gal Gadot seems pretty convinced she'll return, but common sense says Wonder Woman will be recast in the same manner as Batman and Superman.

Talking to Yahoo Entertainment, Carter shared her belief that Wonder Woman 3 will only happen if fans demand it.

"I don’t think they want to do it unless there’s enough pressure from fans," she explained. "I just don’t think they have the mind to do it. And I don’t understand that, because it seems to me that Wonder Woman is different from other characters. She’s not just a superhero."

"Her whole thing is about peaceful solutions. She’s not aggressive to be aggressive. It’s a different story. It’s about inner strength, outer strength. I don’t know why they tabled it, because it’s a great franchise."

Carter went on to say that Wonder Woman 3 "was really interesting, wonderful and about something important," adding that it was, "Not just your typical thing. But they don’t want anyone else to make it."

Jenkins also recently broke her silence on the scrapped threequel when she said, "It's not an easy task, what's going on with DC. James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans...I have sympathy for what a big job it is."

She'd add that the movie is, "over for the time being, easily forever."

We don't expect to ever see Wonder Woman 3 in theaters, and while it's possible Gunn and Safran would bring Gadot back for another movie, it surely wouldn't be with Jenkins after what the response to Wonder Woman 1984 (a movie deemed a "franchise killer" due to the missteps it made compared to its record-breaking 2017 predecessor).

Whatever comes next, we're hoping Wonder Woman doesn't stay on the shelf for too long. DC Studios still hasn't announced plans for the Amazon, though we are supposedly getting a Themyscira-set TV series on Max.
