WONDER WOMAN 1984 Was 2021's Highest-Selling Movie On DVD And Blu-ray

Wonder Woman 1984 initially debuted to positive reviews, but for whatever reason, the narrative changed as more verdicts were counted and the sequel went from being "Certified Fresh" to Rotten. The majority of critics just didn't seem to like it, a sentiment that was also shared by many comic book fans.

Controversially, the Wonder Woman follow-up was released on HBO Max the same day it debuted in theaters. In the midst of the pandemic, however, Warner Bros. had the choice of either doing that or delaying the blockbuster for the umpteenth time.

Neither the critical response nor Wonder Woman 1984's availability on streaming dented its performance on DVD and Blu-ray, though. According to The Numbers, the DC Comics adaptation sold 1,427,182 units (608,686 DVDs and 818,496 Blu-Rays) for a haul of $34,450,146 in total consumer spending in 2021. The movie was also a hit for HBO Max when it debuted there Christmas Day, 2020.

As you can see below, Wonder Woman 1984 beat a lot of big movies to take the top spot, though it was a weird year for Blu-ray releases as many major films didn't start coming out in theaters until late summer. As a result, only a handful of titles were ready for home entertainment debuts in time for Christmas, and it will be interesting to see which movies dominate this chart throughout 2022.

Check out the top 10 best-selling DVDs and Blu-rays below:

1. Wonder Woman 1984
2. The Croods: A New Age
3. Raya and the Last Dragon
4. Godzilla vs. Kong
5. Monster Hunter

@TopBoy - Or...stores had so many copies they needed to just get rid of so they dropped the price down to like $5 to move the merchandise.

I’ll bet most of those that bought it hadn’t seen it before. And regretted their decision afterwards. What a dumpster fire 🤦🏻‍♂️🤮

The Snyder Cut didnt even make it into the top 10???

Anyway, surprised to see WW84 on top of the list.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I can't find where HBO released up-to-date viewership #'s but a third party data company reported that the first 4 days of release had about 1.8 million viewers. WW84 had 2.2 million GvK got 3.6 million and MK got 3.8 million.

MK didn't make the top 10 either despite having the most viewers. I just chalk it up to those movies being one-and-dones for most viewers. HBOMax subscribers grew throughout the year so not as many ppl got to watch WW84 on HBOMax when it debuted compared to GvK and MK.

@JoeInTheBox - It had 1.8 million "viewers", we only know they started watching the movie, we dont know if they actually finished it (same applies to all movies in all streaming plataforms).

I'm talking about the blurays, though, not about most watched movies on streaming, in that case Red Notice won by a laaaaaaaaarge margin there.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I was drawing a comparison to viewers vs. buyers. For example, not as many subscribers to HBOMax when WW84 debuted. Comparatively, ZSJL had more subscribers when it was released, but despite being a new version, is still a movie viewers were familiar with. Less likely to buy that version on physical media as a result.

And there was many disappointed DVD buyers in 2021. All 50 of them.
Realistically there weren’t many good dvds to by in 2021 judging from that list.
