Dark Phoenix finished shooting in October 2017 but it missed its 2018 release date due to Fox ordering extensive reshoots which have seemingly reshaped the entire film. Now, a new report from Entertainment Weekly (via
Collider) reveals some surprising details about how the third act, in particular, ended up being reshaped by that additional photography.
Apparently,
"the filmmakers decided to revamp the look of Phoenix in post (more 'cosmic' and less 'flamy,' according to the director) and shoot a new third act (instead of taking place in space, the climax finds all the X-Men kidnapped and on board a military train)."
To say that sounds underwhelming would be an understatement. After all, seeing the X-Men in space is vastly more exciting than the prospect of the team battling Jessica Chastain's unnamed alien and Dark Phoenix inside a train and amidst the wreckage when it inevitably crashes.
While no one knew this when
Dark Phoenix was given the green light, the movie will serve as the finale to over twenty years of X-Men stories and it should be far more epic than this (just look at
Avengers: Endgame). Instead, Simon Kinberg is expecting us to invest in an iteration of a character who we've only spent two movies with thus far.
