Box office projections were not good for
X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and the Simon Kinberg-directed mutant adventure has seemingly proved the analysts right with a disappointing $5 million haul from Thursday night preview screenings in The US.
While this isn't
too bad - especially taking those wretched reviews into account - it is significantly lower than its predecessor's preview takings (
Apocalypse made $8.2 million in 2016, and 2014's
Days of Future Past took in $8.1 million).
Dark Phoenix is expected rake in around $50 million over the course of its opening weekend (it will probably
do slightly better overseas), but
Secret Life of Pets 2 will likely come out on top. Illumination and Universal's animated sequel made $2.3 million from Thursday screenings, so there's still a chance Fox's finale X-flick clinches it.
