THE NEW MUTANTS Arrives On Rotten Tomatoes With Dismal Scores From Critics And Moviegoers

We're unlikely to see a huge number of reviews for The New Mutants as many critics are refusing to share their verdicts for the Marvel movie, but it does now have a score on Rotten Tomatoes...

The New Mutants is (somehow) playing in theaters, and while the vast majority of critics have declined to review the movie until safe screening options are provided, verdicts are finding their way on to Rotten Tomatoes. As you've probably gathered from the headline, though, first impressions aren't great.

Right now, there are 9 reviews from critics, with two "Fresh" and seven "Rotten." That means The New Mutants currently holds a score of 22%, and even with 142 verified ratings from moviegoers, that "Audience Score" is still only 57%. Clearly not even fans willing to brave theaters to see it liked the movie that much, though it's still early days and these numbers are bound to change.

Globe and Mail slate the movie, stating: "It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where Boone goes wrong, because there are just so many options to choose from." Blu-ray.com didn't enjoy the Marvel Comics adaptation, either, calling it "A plodding viewing experience, even with lowered expectations. It's a better fit for television, as Boone is making a network pilot, not a big screen experience."

The only positive verdicts come from Espinof with "It may not become a cult film, but it is a solid adventure film," and rachelsreviews.net's far from glowing, "It's not perfect but I enjoyed this little teenage superhero origin story film."

We'll have our review of The New Mutants for you once it's safe to watch the movie, but if you decided to check it out last night, make sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

The horror sequences in this film looked insanely generic, and considering that was what they were banking the whole ad campaign around I didn't have high hopes. I'll watch the Anya Taylor-Joy-as-Magik clip compilation when it's out on Youtube, since she looks pretty cool here at least.
Still can't believe this dude and CBS All Access are the ones adapting The Stand... lame.

@tmp3 - I have no hope for The Stand now. About to watch my favorite novel ripped to shreds on screen.

@Supes17 - The Stand should be an HBO mini-series by the team behind Chernobyl. Not on CBS All Access with the team behind New Mutants.

@tmp3 - He’s a true Stephen King fan so I hope it turns out good. Of course, I’m a big King fan as well and I couldn’t make a movie to save my life.

@tmp3 - I’ll just stick with the early 90s version of the Stand. It may be a little dated to those born after 2000 but it was enjoyable at the time. A little long

Does anyone think that Fox would put this on the shelf for years if it was any good?

Well at least we have

X-Men
X2 X Men United
X Men First Class
X-Men Days Of Future Past
Logan
Deadpool

Everything else sucked.

@dracula - Sadly, I was underwhelmed with him in Picard (there were some good scenes, but you can just feel him struggling sometimes). But on a separate note, how does Jeri Ryan just keep getting hotter?

@tmp3 - Forgot about that one, yeah wasn't bad, would not terrible, but nothing that special either. Kind of think its just a middle of the ground film like, has some cool scenes.

@Spock0Clock - Not watching Picard, Roddenberry must be spinning in his grave with how horribly his creation is being handled, but at least we have TNG

Although id say the best Star Trek show is Deep Space 9

@dracula - Does no one in here like Deadpool 2
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 8/28/2020, 2:13 AM
@dracula - The show itself is actually quite good. I thoroughly recommend it. So much great material if you're a fan. I just mean Stewart himself seemed to be struggling in his performance.

@WakandanQueen - I didn't like it, it had some cool scene and ideas, but was bogged down by modern family guy level jokes
dracula
dracula - 8/28/2020, 2:16 AM
@Spock0Clock - So much of what ive heard about it, just seems like a betrayal of what Star Trek is suppose to be. Like the reporter in episode 1, obviously being a take on more modern politics. Saying something about him choosing romulan lives over humans, despite the federation being filled with all types of life, made up of different worlds

@WakandanQueen - I keep forgetting Deadpool 2 was a film that happened until someone brings up Deadpool 2, and I didn't even dislike the movie lol. Zazie Beetz was the best part though.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 8/28/2020, 2:24 AM
@dracula - There was a big terrorist attack 14 years earlier that made the Federation turn inward and petty. A big part of the story is about Picard shaking his disillusionment and reinvigorating the true spirit of what Starfleet is meant to be.

It's certainly not a betrayal of Star Trek from my perspective. Quite the opposite. The show isn't cynical, it's about combating cynicism.
