THE NEW MUTANTS Rumored To Have Another Delay Due To Troubles Behind The Scenes; Hulu Release A Possibility

For sometime, the comic book community has known Fox was struggling with THE NEW MUTANTS director Josh Boone over the direction of the film. With the merger looming, Fox is scrambling to find a solution.

The New Mutants has been a strange case for Fox. In what is currently slated to be the final Fox-Marvel film to ever hit the big screen, the film was initially intended to be the first in a trilogy. After several delays and talks of reshoots, Fox is still struggling with director Josh Boone on the tone of the film, an arguement that has been occurring since pre-production. The lastest rumors suggest that the film might not even hit the big screen after all.

According to Scott Bechtel of Merc with a Podcast, Fox is looking to delay the theatrical release of The New Mutants to early November. Furthermore, they are also thinking of delivering the film straight to Hulu in October instead. Nevertheless, both possibilities are in the air while Josh Boone and Fox struggle in agreeing about the film's tone.

Interestingly, the film's reshoots never happened, and if they did, they would have been overseen by Dark Phoenix's Simon Kinberg. It is worth noting that the last film Kinberg managed reshoots on was Josh Trank's Fantastic Four. According to Omega Underground's Thomas Polito, Kinberg was not happy with what Boone had delivered.

Back in the fall it was indicated that The New Mutants reshoots would have made the tone more horror-esque, but right now Boone and Fox are disagreeing on how horror influenced it should be. Back during production Boone felt he was being restricted from filming the horror film that he wanted, with Fox pushing for a soft and accessible thriller. But now that Boone is satisfied with the horror centric cut he had made, Fox is now trying to force even more scary elements into the film. Cuts being thrown around the studio have ranged from a PG-13 Blumhouse-esque film to the crazy heights of Ari Aster's Hereditary.

Josh Boone has expressed his love for the characters and the potential of New Mutants several times when he got the gig. The creative clearly has the passion and the vision he wants to execute. Hopefully Fox trusts their director. I'd rather see a Boone cut on Hulu than a studio-directed New Mutants in theaters.

Man, I’m really tired of these movie studios taking a chance on a unique take on a superhero movie, giving the director tons of support and basically saying “Do your own thing!” and then once the movie’s in the can, they fire the director, bring in some yes man to take over, and deliver a bland, forgettable film.

I’m also shocked by the amount of power Simon Kinberg has at Fox.

@santoanderson - Yes, this seems to happen more and more lately.

@GoldGuy - There has to be a reason behind it though, they wouldn't just do it for shits and giggles. The only possibility I can think of is that the directors version is really bad and it took the studio the filming process to realise that. Same thing with Solo. I'm not saying the finished product was good, I would rather have seen the original version, but something about it must have scared Disney into bringing in Howard. All I'm saying is we often criticize the studio for doing this kind of thing but there has to be a legit reason behind it other than creative differences.

@TerryTerrapin - If you see the deleted scenes of Solo A star Wars story, you would know that Solo was going to be terrible film if Miller and Lord finished it. The jokes and screenplay were terribly clunky and didn't fit. What works in animated films dont always work in Live action. Ron Howard saved the film and I didn't think Solo was that bad, underrated by fans in my opinion. Its better than Rogue One which had terrible pacing and characterization. Even that film had horrible production problems, where the studio also sent another director to reshoot multiple scenes.

the problem is choosing inexperienced directors that are cheap and giving them too much money to make a film. Josh Boone is a YA (young audience) director who has only directed 2 films. He probably shot a terrible YA film instead of the horror movie Fox wanted. YA films are DOA now, Mortal Engines produced by Peter Jackson is one of the biggest flops in 2018.

How much did this cost fox budget wise? I mean for it to be a Hulu release. I’ll check it out on Hulu but makes me wonder if I’d waste my time if the studio has such little faith

Don’t matter. I’m sure both versions suck. Bring on the reboot.

By the time New Mutants is released, they will have to change the name to OLD MUTANTS.

I'll see myself out.

If there is a cut similar to Hereditary and how crazy that is [frick]ing release it because Boone promised us a horror film version of a CBM.

Didn't they release a trailer for this thing last year in February or something?

Theatrical or streaming is just what to see the film.

If the leaked animatics from a while ago are accurate to the final product then they are going full demon bear (plus anothe rush rise cameo) and I want to see it.

It's all just hearsay.

But who the hell cares what Kinberg thinks? Have you SEEN the Dark Phoenix trailer? They basically remade X-Men 3. That's...not a good thing.

I feel bad for Boone. He had the passion but made an error signing on with Fox. Kinberg is the worst and it was common knowledge when he took the gig

Maybe Feige will sit down with Josh Boone after the merger finalizes and get him on board for a future project? Fox seems to love shiting all over their own directors.

Why are they even releasing this? Just put it on Netflix or Hulu. No one cares about it.

I'll be happy to just sit at home and watch whatever they do with this, to finish it up, on Hulu.

-That being said, I still care a lot more about this film than I do about Dark Phoenix!

In the name of Cthulhu just release Boone's cut, on Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, even on Univision if you freaking want, just release it and stop wasting money on this thing.
