Looking forward to the film - although.... hopefully they've got a decent fight coordinator who's taught Hugh Jackman the basic principles of martial arts stage fighting! I'm getting pretty sick and tired of watching the "Oooo, look at my claws as I hack and slash" routine! Wolverine is a TRAINED ASSASSIN (those claws aint' tooth picks - they're for one purpose ONLY, and it ain't self-defense!) who's lived for over a century, for god's sake - meaning he should be FLUENT in several different styles of fighting and ass-kickery (which were NOT demonstrated in the past 3 X-Men films!!!)! Yeah, yeah, I know - I just drew a HUGE bullseye on my back! Let's hear the complaining about how Hugh is the greatest thing since sliced (no pun inteded) bread in the role and how DARE I criticize his fighting skills! Let the shooting commence...

TheShakeBake - 2/13/2009, 12:03 PM
Hugh Jackman is one of the only actors to live up to their chararaters name i think Robert Downey Jr and Edward Norton did a great job with their charcters so lets hope marvel is going in right direction lol

See Ya, The ShakeBake

Shake - I agree (for the most part), in every aspect EXCEPT fighting skills!!!!

MarkCassidy - 2/13/2009, 12:13 PM
Well, i get what your saying logan but although Wolvie may be trained in those fighting skills, i cant really see him doing spin kicks and what not when he can just use those claws! like u said they aint tooth picks, and theres only so many ways you can slice n dice a bastard!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/13/2009, 12:34 PM
I give that to you ror, but what about the into fight in X-1 (the cage match in Capitol City)? With Logan's heightened senses and reflexes, that punk should have never eve been able to get close to him, let alone kick him in the 'short and curlies'! It should have gone down more like the bar fight in 'Jurassic Park: The Lost World' with Roland Tenbo and that drunk bastard - Wolvie should have cleaned his clock with one hand literally tied behind his back!

And what about a fight where the opponent is more equally matched (oh, say Deathstrike in X2)? Where was the ass-kickery there? It was a one-sided display of TRUE fighting skill vs the same ole' 'hack-and-slash' schtick we've seen before! In my opinion, it was pathetic - Logan got LUCKY (plain and simple)! DEFINATELY not the Wolverine I was expecting (and STILL waiting) to see!

I hate to say this ('cause I know Singer is your man), but in my opinion Bryan Singer doesn't know how to direct/fully exploit fight sequences. He gets drama (he can do drama in spades!), but if I were him I'd leave the fight filming to second unit. Go ahead ror, take the shot (my back is turned - can you see the bullseye properly?)...
Shaman
Shaman - 2/13/2009, 12:58 PM
Well loganoneil, your point is valid (especially the cage fight) for the x-movies but not this one. As he would go to Japan "after" this storyline. Weither it's accurate with Logan's comic book storyline is a mystery to me though. Which storyline is supposed to come first? In the movie continuity though, Japan's second.

Oh and the fight with Mystique in X-1 was also Lame.

Roar, the claws aren't the issue as VEGA kicks asses a plenty!

BUT loganoneil, wolverine is more of a "berserker" and doesn't have the patience for "spin-kicks". He goes right to the point! He'd be more of a "jeet kune do/aikido" kinda artist. Fact is, i've never seen him use martial arts even in the comics but every trading card you buy of him has him down as "one of the best" martial artists in the Marvel Universe. Of course i haven't read that many comics of him but the ones i've read are pretty close to what Jackman portrays. Don't forget, he did base his "whole" performance on the comics.

WEAK. What a terrible casting choice for Sabertooth. Last time I checked, Sabertooth was tall, not 5'8, like Hugh Jackman. Downey Jr., Bale, they are all way too short. I can't wait until they screw up Deadpool.
Betty
Betty - 2/13/2009, 1:05 PM
definitely looks touched up but its an effects driven movie so what are you gonna do? The fog or smoke in the first pic is placed too well and there is something weird in the bottom right corner.
These look ok to me. I wish costume designers would do more little shout-outs to a characters well known attire. This is but a few pics so maybe there's more. I wonder if they tried tan leather for sabretooth? That woulda been kinda close to his colors.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/13/2009, 1:06 PM
Are you gonna bitch that there isn't any hair on Logans arms now??? Shit man those are details matlask! WHO CARES?!?!?!

It's not like they finally gave logan a costume but made it purple or anything! Height is irrelevant! He still captures victor's essence much more than the idiot in X-1!!!
FrankGarret
FrankGarret - 2/13/2009, 1:11 PM
They all look like promo material, I wouldn't worry about it.

And Schrieber is 6'4". Kind of hard to get anyone taller than that without venturing into WWE territory.

Shaman - True - 'Japan' AFTER 'Weapon X', but... the man's been alive for over a hundred years! Who's to say WHERE he's been in the time between the 'Origins' mini-series and the Weapon X program? Marvel's only hinted at 'this-and-that' (the World War II bit which I'm glad to see is included in the movie), but who's to say he DIDN'T travel to the Orient BEFORE? My point is that if all you do is one thing, you'll eventually want to learn all you can about that one thing so that you can be the best at it! It's only logical that Logan would have traveled 'over hill and dale' to learn different fighting systems to train himself.

He's also protrayed as ronin (a masterless samurai). This 'lone warrior' in his quest to find inner-peace was something that even the first film hinted at. Controlling the 'beast' is not something one picks up in a few months, it usually takes YEARS of work to achieve (and some don't even come close). Wouldn't it stand to reason that Logan (recognizing the danger of his bezerker nature) go on a spiritual quest EARLY ON in his life? And where does one usually go to find such answers? ...Palm Springs? ...Bermuda? Nooooo, the Far East - leading me back to the whole martial arts thing.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/13/2009, 1:30 PM
... and for the record, I'm a JKD practitioner. You're right about the 'economy of motion' in a fight (and I've been in a few...), but its a HELL of a lot more than 'hack'... (uh, what am I forgetting? Oh yeah...) ... and 'slash'.

As much as Wolverine knows as far as fighting styles, for the most part he's been portrayed as a bar room brawler. I just want to see Wolverine beat, stab, and cut anything in his way. If I want to see a martial arts movie I'll go rent a Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee flick.

THE GUY PLAYING SABERTOOTH LOOKS LIKE HE'LL GIVE US THE SABERTOOTH WE SHOULD HAVE SEEN IN X 1..HE MAY NOT HAVE THE BLONDE HAIR OR HEIGHTH BUT I THINK THE PSYCHO PERSONALITY WILL MAKE THIS SABERTOOTH SHINE. AWSOME FIRST PIC, VERY CLASSIC, VERY COMIC BOOK. IM DEFINITELLY GONNA WATCH THIS FILM.

this entire movie must take place on new year's.

why the heck are the first two pictures littered with confetti? and don't tell me it's snow or ash or something. it's a bunch of flat paper squares.

i'm sure it'll make sense in the context of the film... right?

alten2345 - 2/13/2009, 3:00 PM
@ darkclaw

Liev Schreiber is listed at about 6'3. If you want somebody taller than that to play Sabretooth then you need to get a pro wrestler or basketball player. No offense I would rather have a great actor like Liev Schreiber playing the role than Kobe Bryant, The Great Kali, or the Big Show.

And if by small you meant not bulky (muscular) enough well then you run into the same kind of problem.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/13/2009, 3:02 PM
Yeah Gambit being cajun from New Orleans, i'd say alten's right on that one thwip.

You raise a good point loganoneil, but from what i can see in the trailor, Logan's been busy in several different armed forces going from war to war through the ages. Maybe he tried in vain to chanel his aggression in combat the ol' american way. And will turn to japan after weapon x.

Funny how your a practitionner of the art which uses the least possible amount of 'motion' and i've practiced the one that uses the most LOL Capoeira LMAO!!!

loganneil and shakebake: i agree completely that those three actors lived up to their characters. but i have to add, the biggest mess up with casting for a character has to be tobey maguire, no offense, i [frick]ing hate him!

Nice pics. Not spectacular, but good.

Yes, Height wise, Leiv is good. BUT, if you want to talk about height (which I know we've been over this) Hugh Jackman is over 6ft, and Logan is what - 5'8"? C'mon. Also, Hugh has done an awesome job at portraying Wolverine, like RDJ as Stark or Norton as Banner. Or even (shoot me now) Affleck as Murdock, NOT Daredevil, but Murdock. Bal ie sgreat as Batman/Bruce.

But uuuh hello. Talk about great actor portrayal of a character - Patrick Stewart as Xavier. Freakin' PERFECT! Especially the manipulative side, he does it wonderfully.

Wolverine has been shown as kind of a puss at times throughout the X-Men movies. BUT, if you will remember Jean/Phoenix in 3 saying to him "What? You think he's not in your head too? He's tamed you Logan."
