Confirmed: Bryan Singer Is Directing X-Men: First Class

The man behind the first 2 X-movies is getting back behind the lens for the teeny mutant adventures. Now we have video confirmation..

Ok, I just received this info from CBM user Erickz.

He writes:

"dude, I was watching the live stream for 'Avatar' on myspace and Bryan Singer just popped up on the red carpet. And they asked what projects he has coming up and he mentioned he is doing 'Jack the Giant Killer' but the moment that shocked me was...right after he said that, he also stated that just yesterday he signed the deal to do the 'X-Men: First Class movie.' And when they told him they were broadcasting live, he made the face of "oh sh*t".So I guess he is returning to the franchise. Anyway, I just had to tell you that so you can post it up or something. And man. I'm not lying here. O had to come and tell another comic book freak like me. Hope this information helps."

Thanks a mill for the scoop Erickz. Obviously this will have to remain a rumor until we get confirmation. But if it turns out to be the real deal I think it's a good thing. Even though I have little to no interest in a 'First Class' movie, no matter who may be directing.

Update: Erickz has sent me a video of Singer confirming he is the director.

I really wish he'd have stayed on and directed X-3, yet at the same time, I don't think he should direct First Class. We need to start over with the actual original team, but I would bet that Singer would want to stay in the continuity he created.

If he sticks to it, he's seriously limiting himself story wise.Certain characters that appeared in the current films can't be used in the new series. As much as I dislike the way Wolverine is always given the spotlight, I still like him to be a part of the team.Just not center stage. Also, they couldn't use Rogue, Shadowcat, Iceman, Angel, Colossus, Nightcrawler or Psylocke. You couldn't kill any characters who are alive in the original movies. And many movies can you get out of it.Depending on how old Scott and Jean are in X-Men 1, I say mid to late 20s, it wouldn't take long to catch up.

Well, I think we would at least have a better chance of not getting teeny bopper actors for First Class with Singer back at the helm.

I love the first 2 X-films, but he didn't make a great Superman film (by that I mean it wasn't very faithful to the comics), so I don't know.

Ah there you are! Great stuff man. We will see how long this stays up now..if it really is something Singer should have kept to himself we will be asked to whip it down.

You might just get some variation on the costumes. Im sure he will want to do something different to his other movies...I wouldn't hold out much hope for the yellow suit though!

Welcome Erikz!

As for Singer, no. We need something fresh, I'm tired of the X-Men/Homosexual allegory and that seems to be his only take on the franchise, so I hope they find a new director. Allegory is great and X-Men is ripe for it, but just not the same one over and over. Give us new take.

I hope for at least some personality in the costumes. The black leather fetish just never sat well with me. The X-Men should have suits that match them in powers and personality. Not all identical (save for one or two subtle changes) black leather outfits.

If this is true, I'd be cautiously optimistic about First Class. Optimistic because we probably aren't getting teen actors in the roles, and because Singer has shown he is a competent director of films (The Usual Suspects) but cautious because he wasn't the most faithful CBM director.

MarkCassidy - 12/16/2009, 9:22 PM
Well, if its faithfulness to the source you will be looking for, worry about who they get to write it. Singer will only direct the story he's given..although costumes and the like will prob be his call for the most part. Who knows..all i ask for is a good movie..and by good I mean not Zac [frick]ing Effron as Cyclops or something.

LC, i could go for that..nudist X Men FTW!

Good news to me - Singer's a solid director. I'm very curious as to how you cast Hank McCoy as a young lad... convincingly...

I want to throw myself off a bridge. This guy ruins everything he touches. He has no respect for the source material.

I'll give Singer a shot. Was X2 not awesome?

All I want is variations on the costumes, a less annoying Cyclops, and a less wooden Jean and I'm set :)
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/16/2009, 9:32 PM
lol, how the hell did he "blow it"? X2 is considered by critics and the public alike to be one of the best Cbms ever. Just because it didn't meet every fan boy's requirement of what a "good" comic book movie should be, does not mean he failed. Those first X movies were class..with or without brightly colored [frick]ing costumes.

SINGER is best for X-movies more so than the SUPERMAN franchise, he tried though, but X3 could've a lot better with him at it, oh well.

Looks like he might get another change, pretty good news!

X2 = [frick]ING amazing film!!

Who cares about what the critics say. The guy is a just terrible director. I'll give him credit where credit is due. He can cast his aassss off. However, he thinks it's perfectly fine to take 40+ years of continuity, throw it in a bucket and pull out what he wants. He took one of my all time favorite X-Men villains the REVEREND William Stryker and turned him into some military guy. And gave him a son who is a mutant. Turned Iceman into a student while Cyclops and Jean are adults. This guy has ZERO resect for this franchise and the wonderful writers and artists who created a world around these characters that has been succsessful for 40+ years.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/16/2009, 9:44 PM
Dude, why are you blaming the director of those movies? Singer didn't write the screen plays! And by your comments, am I to assume you feel this way about every CBM there has been(yes, even the all holy Iron Man!)? Since none of them have remained completely..and in some cases not at all faithful to the comics? And yes, I know some liberties are bigger than others and there are little fanboy rules and regulations to these things..But seriously, if your going to allow these things to tarnish your enjoyment of an otherwise great movie, whats the point? Just read the comics.

I'm of a mixed opinion about this 'news'. Both the X films he directed were good but it would be nice to see a fresh take on the series, even if they don't decide to reboot it and First Class turns out to be about the early years with in the already established movie universe.

as stand along movies i enjoyed the first two x-men movies. my only problem is if they are going to go back and redo it to have the original 5, it would clash with the current storyline they have going now. I'm actually getting a little tired of movies having to go back and be "redone" a few years after they have come out. If they keep the story straight from the beginning, they wouldn't have to go back and change things.

Personally I'd rather see them go ahead with an X4 but they kind of wrote themselves into a huge ditch with X3. I think, unless there is some very clever writing, that a sequel will just seem like a movie about Wolverine and the X-Men, not the X-Men.

I completely understand where your coming from Rorschach, but there is a huge difference between taking a few liberties like Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk and doing what he did. I don't want to watch a shot for shot remake of a comic. What is the point of that? There is creative liscence and blatant disrespect. He falls into the latter category. Him, Tim Burton, and Brett Ratner.

I would also like to say that I really like the fansite you have here and I'm just stating my opinion. In no way do I mean any disrespect. I just putting my perspective out there.

If he stays with the current movie continuity Iceman and Angel are out but that does leave us with three of the original five. Storm seems to be a given considering the movies but who will make number 5?

And truthfuly I don't understand why X3 was considered so bad. Was it as good as the first two. No not really but given all the changes from sourse in the first two, what the heck was so wrong with it?
LadyArkham
LadyArkham - 12/16/2009, 10:06 PM
@Leee yeah they are interested in making money, not pleasing the fans. i guess the know all of us fangirls and fanboys will go spend the money at the theaters to see it anyway haha

@comicguy yeah it would take some EXTREMELY good writing to pull it off. not that it isn't possible, but based on what we have seen so far, it wouldn't happen.

Arkham @ yEAH YOUR RIGHT LOL! its a pity we don't many good cbm movies like WATCHMEN an IRON MAN etc, but i suppose we are all a bit spoiled nowadays, atleast we dont havta wait every 3 years for a BAT Movie anymore to come out lol.

Hopefully FOX will wake up an make a great FIRST CLASS movie for us all anyway, fingers crossed!!

Just remember something here singer gave the world X-2. A movie far superior to all but a few comic films. Watchmen, Batman Begins, Iron Man, and Sin City stand strong with it. Don't even try to debate this shit anymore, you'll only make a complete ass of yourselves.
comicguy
comicguy - 12/16/2009, 10:32 PM
I'm with you juggy, I didn't think X3 was as bad as alot of people say it was though they could have done the Mutant Cure and Phoenix/Dark Phoenix saga in two seperate movies instead of putting them both into one. Plus they tried to introduce too many new characters all at once.

As for the members of the First class, if you include Woverine into coninuity, we've got Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Beast and Emma Frost.

If an X4 is made and if Wolverine continues to be the center of attention in the movies then I propose that they change the name of the X-Men movie franchise to Wolverine and the X-Men or something along those lines
