Alcon/WB Want Christopher Nolan For Their Blade Runner Spin Offs

We have an update on yesterday's news that Alcon Entertainment(a WB subsidiary) has bought the rights to Blade Runner. Apparently Chris Nolan is in the studio's sights to direct when ans IF any movies even happen..

I have to say, I got a bit of a scare when I thought that a Blade Runner reboot was going to be forced upon us. But it turns out thing aren't quite so bad, and potentially good! Original producer and rights holder Bud Yorkin wouldn't sell the rights for a remake of Ridley Scott's classic, only the rights to make spin offs. So that means sequels and or prequels.

In an interview with io9, the gents that purchased the rights Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove name check Christopher Nolan as the man they would like to see bring their new vision of Philip K Dick's story to life..

“Our friend Chris Nolan who we did ‘Insomnia’ [with] would be in the pie in the sky for us. I think the methodology that Chris Nolan brought to ‘Batman’ is precisely what we aspire to whomever the filmmaker is, whether Ridley comes back and joins us or it’s someone else. It’s precisely what we aspire to with ‘Blade Runner,’ that’s the template for us.”

But, before any of us get too excited at the prospect of Nolan directing a Blade Runner movie, the duo also admit that these potential films may not even see the light of day..

“This may work, or it may not work. We may make this movie, but in truth it may never get made.”

There are probably many people that will be happy enough one way or the other! As for Nolan, no word on whether he is interested but after TDKR he is rumored to be going ahead with a Howard Hughes biopic so that might keep him away even if he did want to get involved.

Nolan was going to do a Howard Hughes biopic starring Jim Carey originally but decided not to because Martin Scorsese was doing one at the same time. I guess he still wants to do it after all.

Nolan made everyone on the production crew for Begins watch Blade Runner.

There is nothing to finish. The story is over. The only way to continue on and be even slightly respectful is do do something more akin to the original novel, which Blade Runner is really only slightly based on in the first place. If Scott would come back that would be great but I doubt he would. Nolan is a great replacement.

I never read the comics! But looking at the covers I assume they were based on the movie. The book is totally different. The characters only real similarities are their names. Deckard kills replicants to save up enough money to buy his wife a real sheep because their robot one got destroyed!

@ intruder

on the slipcase to "moon" blu-ray,british newspaper was quoted saying "the finest sci-fi movie since blade runner" - daily mirror

he sounds like the man for the job if you ask me.

Batman Begins looks very similar to blade runner, whereas TDK is closer to heat... BB is one of the most critically acclaimed CBMs of all time, right up there with TDK, Spiderman2, and maybe even iron man. (NO NOT IM2)

So if Nolan is chosen, I wouldnt mind

Too much emphasis on Nolan. That is why these ideas for banking on another Blade Runner type movie is a mistake. No true creative vision, just a silly idea of take this and that and we can make great movie. Robocop, Alien, Mad Max, are other ideas that I feel may ultimately suffer from trying to catch lightning in a bottle again and failing. Few movie sequels can live up to the original but we love to see something again that made us go "wow now that blew my mind!!" This is what Hollywood hopes for us to dish over 3D $$$$'s for us to hopefully go "WOW" one more time. To see attack ships off the shoulder of Orion!!!

I would very much mind. I would very much prefer Scott to return to the helm if the film does get made. Enough Chris Nolan. To much praise for being a moderately decent director and a man who doesn't understand how to write proper dialouge.

@intruder & marvel72- I agree Duncan Jones would be a good choice if Not Scott... anyone but Nolan though.

@Fuel - It's about The Narrows. The movies aren't that similar, but Nolan looked to the set design in Blade Runner in coming up with what he thought the worst part of Gotham would look like, and I think the similarities between the two are pretty undeniable.

Also, I don't think Nolan would take this project. I could be wrong, and it would stand a better chance at being good if he did, but I honestly would bet he likes Blade Runner too much to be willing to try something like this.

By the way, to any one who hasn't watched this yet and wants to based on the stories about it recently, and speaking as someone who owns four different cuts of the film on blu-ray, definitely try to check out the Final Cut version if you can.

If Alcon can do this right, and treat the great source material (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) correctly, why wouldn't I be excited about this?

I'm OK with 1 prequel and 1 sequel, done properly, with Christopher Nolan or Ridley Scott himself directing.

There is a danger to overdo this with too much material: a tv show that morphs into a CGI cartoon, that morphs into a videogame, that morphs into a lunch box or a happy meal.

I think the perfect mix is one prequel + one sequel, supported by comic book and novel adaptations, maybe some videogames, plus some high-end collectibles. That's it. No TV Shows, no coloring books.

It sounds like they are going to wait for Nolan. Fine. I'm in no hurry to see this. If you are going to do something like this, do it well.

Everything is ok as long Ridley comes back. If they make a prequel it would probably tell the story of young Deckard or Roy Batty´s prison adventures. If they make a sequel we could probably get to see Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard again?

Christopher Nolan overkill. Even if he leaves the thing right away, he must always be related to franchises like Bond, Blade Runner, Superman, and Batman at the same time. It's like they cannot think.
Supes17

Calm down guys... Nolan has only done 8 movies so far, not counting TDK... His career is not going to stop after that, i mean, the Dude's still young, he has a lot of talent. So how is this overkill? Hes just rising to fame just like James Cameron did with Titanic and Spielberg did with JAWS. CHILL OUT
