IRON MAN Star Robert Downey Jr. Is Nearly Unrecognisable In New Stills From Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER

Thanks to Total Film (via ActioNewz.com), we have a new look at Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated next movie. Revolving around J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who was tasked with creating the first nuclear bomb during World War II, the story follows him in the aftermath of the horrifying bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Batman Begins star Cillian Murphy plays the title character, and he can be seen below along with Emily Blunt as Robert's wife, Kitty, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, the Chairman of the US Atomic Enemy Commission, who later became one of Oppenheimer's greatest detractors.

We also have behind-the-scenes shots featuring Murphy, Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema.

Talking to the publication about the Iron Man star's role in this project, Nolan said: "We all know that Robert Downey Jr. is one of the great movie stars."

"It’s so easy to forget that he’s also one of the greatest actors of all time. Watching him lose himself in that performance, and completely lose himself in a character in this way, was just an incredible reminder of just what an amazing actor he is."

Fans remain keen to see Nolan return to the comic book genre, though we don't anticipate that happening in the near future. Christian Bale has said he'd return as Batman if the director is involved, but Nolan has shown little interest in returning to Gotham City for any sort of follow-up.

The amazing cast also includes Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Eherenreich, and Matthew Modine. Like Dunkirk, it's a historical retelling of a turning point in human history, but there's still the expected level of secrecy surrounding Nolan's next blockbuster.

Based on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, we have a feeling this one will be something really special.

Oppenheimer arrives in theaters on July 21, 2023.
