UPDATE: John Krasinski has just announced that the entire second season of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan has been released one day early!
Ahead of tomorrow's long-awaited second season premiere of
Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan,
Entertainment Weekly sat down with the stars to preview the upcoming eight-episode run, which will send Jack (John Krasinski) to Venezuela to unravel a terrorist plot, concocted by the Venezuelan president, that threatens the safety of the entire world.
Krasinski is quite bullish on the second season, which has been receiving extremely strong reviews for season two, and tells EW a little of what to expect this year. “
I feel like the first season explored the beliefs of who you are, what you believe you are, but this is much more about right and wrong. It’s about stopping a corrupt regime, which is really kind of fun.” He also expressed his enthusiasm about his new castmates. “
I couldn’t have been more happy about Wendell in the first season, but Noomi is the best part of the new season. She’s such an interesting actress. She’s so bold. She’s so brilliant. And then Michael Kelly, I’ve been a fan of his forever. What’s frustrating is when these amazing actors come in and they’re even better people than they are actors, and you’re like, ‘Oh, boy, you’re better than me at everything.'”
As he said, Jack's latest mission will reunite him with James Greer (Wendell Pierce), who has been working out of Moscow since the events of season one. Greer cryptically teases, “
Something I’m working on intersects with something that Jack is working on and it pulls us back together. More things are at stake this season. It is even more multifaceted. There are running, simultaneously, different threads which means the payoff is even more like a really good thriller, a good novel.”
Along with Greer back on his team, new faces include Noomi Rapace (
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) as German intelligence agent Harriet Baumann and Michael Kelly (
House of Cards) as CIA agent Mike November.
Now, while the
House of Cards vet was undoubtedly excited to join the series, telling EW, “
I was like, ‘That sounds like a lot of fun, ’cause John’s awesome to work with.',” his character won't be quite as thrilled to meet Krasinski's CIA ace, who basically turns his life upside down. “
[Mike’s] life was really simple before he shows up. Then all hell breaks loose.”
As for Baumann, she's definitely more of a wild card as Rapace explains, “
She’s pretty amazing. She’s very layered. She speaks a lot of different languages. She grew up all over the world. She can basically kind of take any shape, any form. She is really good at kind of adapting into different personalities. She knows how to fight, and she can, but she’s more playing mental and psychological games."
Now, whether she's friend, foe or a new love interest, that all remains to be seen. "
I think they respect and fear each other, and are probably quite intrigued by each other as well. It’s an interesting relationship. It’s not what you think it’s going to be, which I love. It’s way more interesting.”
In addition to Krasinski (
The Office), both Abbie Cornish (
Seven Psychopaths) and Wendell Pierce (
The Wire) will also return as Cathy Muller and James Greer, respectively. New series regulars include Noomi Rapace (
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), Michael Kelly (
House of Cards), Jovan Adepo (
Sorry For Your Loss), Jordi Mollà (
Bad Boys II), Cristina Umaña (
Narcos), and Francisco Denis (
Narcos).
Also, in case you missed it, the critically-acclaimed series has already been
renewed for a third season, meaning Jack's adventures are far from over.
