When Danny Boyle boarded Bond 25, it was reported that he had a fresh take on the franchise. In fact, his pitch was so good that the studio threw out the initial direction of franchise veterans Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. Now with a new course set, the film was set to start production in the winter. This was until Boyle left the project altogether.

Boyle, who is one of the few unique voices in modern filmmaking, reportedly left the project over the casting of the antagonist. This has left the studio very anxious, with a page one rewrite becoming a big possibility. But don't worry Bond fans, another visionary filmmaker may board the project, this time in the form of Edgar Wright.

In addition to the Wright, who hit the mainstream scene like a truck with Baby Driver, Jean-Marc Vallee of Big Little Lies was named as a potential contender. Additionally, Hell or High Water's David Mackenzie and Yann Damange from the upcoming White Boy Rick are being eyed.

If he were to come through, It would be interesting to see whether Wright would be bringing his comedic sensibilities to the film, something he is primarily known for. A director like this would bring back some of the lightheartedness the franchise has been lacking for Craig's run. And if anyone has seen Logan Lucky, you know Craig can pull out the laughs. But if Wright were to go full on dramatic, that would be equally as interesting. In this age of stale blockbuster filmmaking, there is nothing like a director with range.

I think he would be a better fit for a Mission Impossible film more so then James Bond.

I love Wright but he is not a good fit for Bond. I would love to see someone like Guy Ritchie take the bull by the horns and take on Britain's top spy.

Okay, they can do this, but they couldn't have shown us a younger Superman?

probably last one with Craig. after that there is a chance that Nolan will reboot the series with new Bond.

I think Wright would be dope. Sure he's comedic but he's not a one trick pony. He knows how to get serious and I think he would have the type of gonzo one of a kind vision I was expecting when Boyle was on board. I think Edgar Wright is how you make Bond new again.

My vote goes to Denis Villeneuve! Perfect choice imo.

Honorable mentions- Robert Zemeckis, or James Wan.

Okay, so here's there problem:

They want a good director to celebrate Bond 25.

However, they do not want to work with a good director.

If you want an auteur, then you have to be prepared to let them do them. You can't hire someone like Danny Boyle and then complain when they bring in their regular crew.

You can't hire someone like Phil Lord and Chris Miler and then complain when their irreverant, dangerous and fresh grasp of the current zeitgeist is on full display. You don't say "Stop improvising! Stick to the script!"

And you don't hire Edgar Wright and then say that his incredibly unique and specific style doesn't quite meld with the general tone of your franchise. Not unless he was hired long before that tone was established (ahem*AntMan* ahem).

So, yes, whilst I love the idea of a Danny Boyle or Edgar Wright (or even Chris Nolan/Ridley Scott/Joe Wright/Lynne Ramsey) directed Bond movie for this one-off special occasion, I don't think they're fully prepared to give us that.

I think instead, we will be celebrating this landmark with another droll, churned-out and ultimately forgettable, cookie-cutter Bond movie that fits the producers safe idea of what a Bond movie should be and has their main star occasionally interfering with the recipe.

Maybe they should be getting rid of Daniel Craig as being attached to the project and let the directors have full creative control over all aspects of the creative process (y'know, like they're supposed to).
I can't see Christopher Nolan doing a standalone Bond if he has to be lumped with the same Bond as the last 4 movies. Wouldn't it be better for him to come in with his own version of Bond and then disappear?

I hope it does delay for another year. I hope these directors on the list one get picked & carrying for the filming in December or early January 2019 & new Script writer too. So everything can be back on track no more bad news that delays it.
