MAD MAX: FURIOSA Rumored To Be In The Works With WATCHMEN's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II On Board

It's been a while since we had any solid updates on a follow-up to George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, but a new rumor now claims that a prequel focusing on Furiosa (Charlize Theron) is in development...

Some potentially great news for Mad Max fans here, as a new rumor claims that director George Miller is indeed planning a follow-up to Fury Road, and is expected to begin prep as soon as he's done filming his current project, Three Thousand Years of Longing.

According to Collider’s SneiderCut podcast, the movie is indeed being developed as a Fury Road prequel and will focus on a younger Furiosa before she became one of Imortan Joe's Imperators. Sneider seems doubtful that Charlize Theron will reprise the role, however, and believes a younger actress will wind up being cast.

He has also heard that Watchmen and Aquaman actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is being eyed for the male lead.

It's very early days and Sneider cautions that we should take this with a pinch of salt for now, but hopefully it does come together. It would be disappointing if Theron didn't return as Furiosa, but perhaps we could see her and Tom Hardy back in the saddle for a more direct sequel to Fury Road at some point.

What do you guys make of this? Let us know in the usual place.

I’d prefer the next mainline Mad Max, but I’ll take what I can get while Miller’s still around :/

Knowing Miller, he'd probably cast Theron in another role in Furiosa

@GhostofCipher - The bad guy from the first Mad Max played Immortan Joe in Fury Road

@TheJustinHammer - Yeah, I don't think Theron will be cast in a non-Furiosa role, but it's not something he's never done before

I [frick]ing loved this dude in Watchmen. He played a role that I thought he was gonna flub up based on its difficulty, but he absolutely crushed it and made it his own. Dude's upcoming projects list is insane - Candyman, new Aaron Sorkin film, Matrix 4, Aquaman 2 and a Mad Max prequel? God damn. Talk about a murderers row lineup.
Also, Mad Max Fury Road is my favorite action film of the last decade, absolutely stoked to see whatever Miller has lined up next

Theron not returning sounds disappointing though

Obviously doesn’t seem definitive but would be cool to see.

I don’t but it though. Why not have Charlize? She MAKES FURIOSA WORK.

Snydercut podcast? This is one of the many reasons why Collider is trash now, [frick] Marc!

I only wanted a Furiosa movie if Max was going to be part of it.

Fury Road is one of my favorite films ever. But this news isn't really exciting me.

I'd rather have another George Miller-directed Max adventure!

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - 1000% agreed. Wish I saw fury road in theaters ... one of the best movies the past 5 years easily

Interesting to see so many people who point to Furiosa as an example of why they “clearly have nothing against strong female characters” suddenly balk at the thought of her getting her own movie...

@SerKurtWagner - I think it's more so that it would be a prequel with Theron.

A Mad Max film without Mad Max with Furiosa being played by someone other than Charlize Theron doesn’t sound appealing to me. I’d much rather get a proper sequel to Fury Road.

@LeonNova - I’d rather see whatever movie George Miller is inspired to make, and trust his casting instincts, which have clearly proven to be a pretty big part of the chemistry that gives us landmark movies like Fury Road.

I mean, I’m down for another Miller action flick, especially in this universe, but Furiosa without Theron and no Max? And a prequel?

I suppose I didn’t have high hopes for Fury Road, what with its long production and recasting of Mel, so...

It sounds more like the type of film you'd give to a smaller director to see how the series can work without Miller at the helm, while Miller does Wasteland with Hardy.

Mackenzie Davis is 12 years younger than Charlize Theron. Is that young enough to portray Furiosa?
