Producer Neal Moritz On ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Remake

Could Gerard Butler be the next Snake Plisskin?

Collider recently had the opportunity to talk with producer Neal Moritz about his upcoming projects. They covered Preacher, S.W.A.T. 2, Sinbad, The Boys and Man-Witch.

The movie that imediately caught my attention was a remake of the cult classic Escape From New York.
Moritz had this to say about a possible remake...

Yes, we have a script. We’re out to directors right now. We’ve had quite a few meetings with directors and there’s a couple of actors that are really interested in playing Snake and we’ll see what happens.

Well, you know I have fond memories of a lot of movies and then I go back and watch them and I’m not sure exactly what my biggest fond memories of those movies are. I have a huge affinity for the character of Snake Plissken and I have huge affinity for the central idea of that movie Escape from New York and there’s a lot of characters and a lot of things that I like. We wouldn’t be going off to try and remake it unless we really liked that movie. But we’re also inventing some new things along the way.

When the subject of possible actors for the film came up Gerard Butlers name was mentioned...

Gerard was really interested in playing it. He hasn’t read the new script yet, so we’ll probably have a conversation with him once we get a director on board.

I am a fan of Butlers but I just believe there are some movies that shouldn't be remade and some characters that should be left alone. Kurt Russell's over the top portrayal, of an over the top character, in an over the top movie, is one of a kind in my opinion. This is one remake that I personally hope gets shelved at some point or another. Hawksblueyes

Its not, her last name is Moretz.

I'd rather this movie didn't get remade. It is an iconic classic that should be left alone. Its own sequel, Escape from LA wasn't that great

Good stuff Hawks.

HOLLYWOOD!!!...stop attempting to remake all of the one of a kind good, solid, enduring classics. There are alot of good NEW ideas. Just have the balls to take a chance on the new stuff. All these remakes and restarts (with the execption of Batman) is getting old. I would prefer sequels or prequels to flat our remakes...just my thoughts.

Ryen Reynolds for Snake Plisskin! NOT!!!!

No remake!!!! I love this movie. Kurt russel is still active last time I heard. Why not a better sequel? Escape from Hawaii... Florida... Texas ... there are still 50 states Snake can escape. Better yet go International . Escape from Canada... Tokyo... Manila...Yemen. Or if they want to finish off Kurt Russel/ Snake make it a final chapter "Snake's Escapes Finally!". And if they want to appeal the younger generations then do a "passing of the torch" kind of movie.. "When Snake meets Max!" There are a lot of things you could do to revive the franchise other than remake. Oh common! Does Hollywood thinks that all franchise are like Batman?

SNAKE"S on a PLANE lol.

Yeah actually I knew that. It was intended as a joke. Danny Boyle was really great and you have to admire Simon Beaufoy creativity. Although I remembered from the credit it was based from a novel(?) "Million dollar Question?"

Key words in the article..."cult classic". You don't remake cult classics. There is a reason they are cult classics and they need to be left that way.

Nooo!!!! Leave this alone. I agree sequel with Russel or nothing at all. Also Kurt Russel was furious when he found out gerald butler was talked to about the role. He said it should be an american and was pissed he wasnt talked to about even being snake again.

wow, I must be the only person on here that didn't like those movies, either one. which is odd cause I do usually like kurt russel movies. one reason I didn't like them is probably cause I hate to musicians try to be actors, they usually blow it out their collective asses.

I'm lookin at you LL cool J, Queen Latifa, Ice Cube, and countless others.

Thorooughbred@ Musicians trying to be actors? What does that have to do with Kurt Russell in the Escape movies? You lost me there.

Gunsmith@ Yeah, he would be good if they did remake it, but it would be blasphemy to remake it! :-P

@Ranger Well Isaac Hayes was in Escape from New York, but I don't know about escape from LA.

I really want them to just leave Snake alone. Either get John Carpenter to do a sequel or a prequel (it would be cool to see what happened in Cleveland) or just leave it alone.*Spoilers* Though if they made a movie about Snake surviving in a post apocalyptic wasteland after the events of Escape from LA that would probably be pretty cool too.

Gun@ they shouldn't remake this at all but if they do, that's a perfect pick!!!!
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 4/11/2010, 9:05 PM
superpatriot@ If that is what he is referring to, Isaac Hayes was a decent actor and I wouldn't knock Escape From New York just because Hayes was in it. To each their own, I guess. There are plenty of "good musician turned actors". I like some of Queen Latifa's movies and I also think Harry Connick, Jr. has done well in a couple of his roles. We could talk about Will Smith, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Sting, Courtney Love, Meatloaf, Kris Kristofferson, Steven Van Zandt, etc. but hey..it all boils down to opinion.

Gunsmith you are dead on point with Sawyer from Lost...he will be a good Snake..

Until you posted that i was also saying I dont want to see an escape from NY remake.

it might sound corny, but maybe just make an 3rd Escape movie from some place else...i dont know like Escape from Russia lol.

@ ranger 14, I was refering to Issac Hayes, wasn't he the main villian in the first movie?

and I didn't say all muscians, just that usually when someone tries to go from one or the other, its not pretty. it works the other way too, actors usually dont have a successful crossover either.

the ones I mentioned are just the ones that bother me, cause, imo, they are bad actors and they cost real actor jobs.

and yes I did think Isaac hayes was a bad actor.
and are you really tring to tell me courtney love is a good actress? what did she ever do besides the people versus larry flint? and in that she wasn't really acting, she played a junkie. ooooohhhh that must have been a real stretch for her. how did she ever prepare for such a role?

I will however give you kris kirstoferson, and harry conick jr. both good actors.
