Sylvester Stallone Retires Rambo Franchise

The 63-year-old actor-writer-director has decided to scrap his plans for Rambo 5!

Sylvester Stallone's 2008 Rambo was enough of a hit at the worldwide box office that plans were being made for a fifth movie in the franchise that began with First Blood in 1982. Stallone spoke several times about his plans for Rambo 5, initially saying that the plot would revolve around human traffickers, then announcing that the franchise get a go sci-fi by having Rambo fight a "feral beast." Stallone then announced that the "man/beast" story would become a different movie, with a different protagonist, and that Rambo 5 would go back to the original plot. Now, however, Stallone has announced that he plans to shelve the Rambo franchise, possibly forever.

In a recent interview with Empire, Stallone said that he is "99% sure" that "Rambo's pretty well done" and that he didn't "think there'll be any more."

"I was going to do it. I said I’d never talk about this, but with—I feel that with Rocky Balboa, that character came complete circle. He went home. But for Rambo to go on another adventure might be, I think, misinterpreted as a mercenary gesture and not necessary. I don’t want that to happen.

"I’m very happy with the last Burmese episode, because I didn’t pull any punches on it. I wanted it to be what civil war really is—rough. You can’t candy coat it, and where do you go from there? So that’s [Rambo V] going to go."

Stallone hasn't completely abandoned the character, however. He went on to say that he is currently at work on a director's cut of Rambo that will add twelve minutes to the movie.

"He does a speech at the beginning of the movie to Julie Benz where he lays out why his life has been a complete disappointment and why war is natural and peace is an accident. And how he just feels that his life has been a waste. It’s very important to hear that and I didn’t think so at the time. I’m going to go back and put in some stuff."

Farewell, John Rambo.

I think we all dodged a bullet (pun intended) with this one.

And, yes, this is a comic book movie...

I was pleasantly surprised with both Rocky Balboa and Rambo, and felt that they ended appropriately with both characters coming full circle (Rambo returning to the States at the end). But then I saw the trailer for The Expendables and the shape Stallone had gotten himself back in to, and realized that a fifth Rambo could be pulled off believably. I'm actually sorry he won't be doing it.

I don't think just because a movie HAS a comic it should be called a comic book movie ¬_¬ especially since 90% of blockbuster style films now seem to be adapted into comics.

Stallone didn't seem to know what he wanted to do with the franchise. A man-beast? Are you kidding me? That would have been ridiculous. I think he may have decided to put a wrap on it after his massive neck injuries while filming The Expendables. Aging is a bummer...

The last movie was awful. Good gore and violence thats it, shite acting and ridiculous characters. Some don't mind that in an action movie but it bothers me. I did really like Rocky Balboa though. Either way, enough is enough, you can stretch your disbelief so far, but a 65 year old man fighting a man-beast in the wilderness..yeah.

@Ror -- I'm with you there. The last movie was gods-awful. It started as a look at where cinema's best known 'Nam vet has gone in trying to come to terms with his life as a whole. Then it devolved into a simple gore-fest with a tissue-paper thin plot. Rocky Balboa was far more interesting on a lot of levels because it was centered around the characters more than anything.

I actually liked the last rambo...a lil weird with the whole firecracker in a woman's vajayjay (sick pervs) but it was gruesome.

But gruesome is easy. You want to see gruesome? Watch August Underground's Mordem. Absolutely awful film with the most realistic, sick, depraved scenes I have ever witnessed. Its still a load of shite.

Hmm...have you seen the Killing Gene? Movie was gross as hell. Sometimes you watch these movies and you wonder wth is going on in this person's mind that they would write such sick shit.

Ror- I will agree with everything you said except for the fact that i don't see Rambo falling into the "complete shyte" comparison.

I absolutely LOVED the last Rambo, i guess its because i had very very low expectations. It turned into an instant classic for me, following the great series that preceded it. But i'm sure as hell glad that he canned his feral beast brainfart. That would have eradicated the awesomeness of the whole series. The last film had its flaws but there was a good continuation of character development in Rambo's defence. Its was nothing to write home about but wasn't cringe worthy either IMO. It was just nice to see a beloved character back in a no holds barred and justified setting. Even though the performances were average at best, they were believable at the very least. I know people that personally act how those "emissaries" did and it was cool to see how Rambo dealt with the situation. The awegazmic action sequences just added spice to the mix making it even more enjoyable. It was gruesome but beautifully shot by Stallone! Those sequences were oceans better than anything shown in War Zone. What a pestering pile of puss that film was. Now THAT would be "complete shyte" IMO. Rambo can at least be concidered a decent action film.

ive got to admit i loved the last rambo as well, it's a shame he's not going to do another but if his age is catching up and with that neck injury it's his call and fair play to the man.

I enjoyed both movies. (Rocky and Rambo) for the respective reasons that they were trying to convey. The story that Rambo was trying to tell could have been tightened up and explained a little more, but it was compelling enough for me to desire whatever added footage Stallone may apply to it. I think both were a tasteful conclusion to two great cinema icons. Despite Rambo's simple plot, I think it's fair to say that it is the best sequel of all the installments.

Love the Rambo movies, but its good to see the franchise not being flogged like a dead horse. Rambo 4 was a good ending for him. Now please, please, give us an Expendables trilogy and it would be also great to see Sylvester Stallone appear in a comic book role too before he retires! (Just nothing like Judge Dredd, Im trying to forget that) I ask you guys, what character would he be good at playing in a comic book movie?

yeah, Im a Fan of stallone...
That last rambo was fcuking awsome..bloodiest movie I ever saw and i like the fact that he added others to sort of help vs. one man vs and army.

The movie ended well...the whole scene with him going home and seeing his dad (i think that was the bonus disk)....pretty much finished the story. John coming home.

Thanks Sly for the best bloodiest scene in history...

I’ve got to admit; though the last film was a little thin I loved it too. It tugged at a great nostalgia aspect, which I'm sure influences my opinion somewhat. If for nothing else it was a great coda for the character and as much as I would have like to see the continuing story I don't think there was a story left to tell really. I always said the only justifiable thing I could see that would bring John Rambo back into the game was if Trautman's daughter called him for help, say the granddaughter was abducted into a human trafficking ring while on a college trip or something. Sort of "My father said if anything bad were to ever happen I should find you."

Aside from that I couldn't see a reason for Rambo to involve himself, but that story would have too many similarities to "Taken." Though I'll tell you, if they ever want to do a straight up Ennis based Max series Punisher movie with the 60 year old Frank, Stalone has my vote after seeing Rocky and Rambo.

WOW! Is nobody else gonna give notice to just how horrible Arnold looks up there? I'm feeling pretty good about myself right now. Yesterday I felt like I looked like a Hefty Bag STUFFED full of Mashed Potatoes. Now I feel like a burlap sack full of rocks. Yeah..... I know I probably still look like the hefty bag...

Shaman, I think that maybe I hated it so much because eof how well shot it was. The violence was pretty realistic and horrific, but thats the problem. If your going to make a statement and show how brutal this type of conflict/genocide can be(babies thrown in fires, rape, mutilation) then you damn well better have a good film structured around it or else it comes off exploitative..and look what Stallone did. Pine, tasteful is the last word I would use to describe Rambo!

RorMachine- I will very much agree with you that it shouldn't be concidered "tasteful" LOL. And i also understand your point, it was some of the best ever filmed action sequences in the history of hollywood. The gritty feel of the realism Stallone brought to those scenes was just overkill when compared to its story. But i guess, like Phinehas, the reason i enjoyed this sequel the best out of the whole series is that... well, the stories weren't that noteworthy in the second and third chapters to begin with. So i felt like we got the best ever chapter (since i never was a fan of the first). Mix that with the nostalgia factor (wink wink Nero) and the breath taking action and boom... my favorite of the series. But i really understand your point of view though. Very logical especially coming from a fan of the first, also very realistic chapter. The action fit the first film better because it was a bit more down to earth.

Rambo was a good movie with lots of violence and gore but the gore didn't really effect me much because the bad guys were so evil that you wanted them to die in the worst way possible. It is best to leave Rambo alone.
