Sylvester Stallone Talks The Expendables, Plus a New Still

Writer/director/actor Sylvester Stallone brings in a veritable who's who of movie tough guys to help him turn back the clock on the Hollywood action movie in The Expendables, including Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, and even the "Governator" himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"What I wanted to do was just try to do something that is a little different. Today, technically, we're incredibly gifted and versatile with CGI, and I wanted to do a film that was more about men, doing things that we did back in the 80s and 90s that were a little more mano a mano – actual, physical stunts. It's also a story that isn't super-gigantic; it's almost a believable story.

"I guess it's kinda like The Dirty Dozen, or one of those films that comes along every once in a while – like The Magnificent Seven – to try to take that old formula and move it into a modern era. We accomplished it; I'm very, very happy with the film.

Stallone admits to getting the title of the movie from a line in Rambo 2, but said that it's really about the nature of the men featured in the film.

"They don't have families, all they have is each other. They're expendable to the rest of the world, but they're not expendable to each other – they're just necessary. So it's a real brotherhood. I think it has a lot of heart for an action film."

The Expendables also features Eric Roberts, Steve Austin, Randy Couture, David Zayas and Brittany Murphy.

The Expendables opens August 20, 2010!

I just watched Rambo last night. Not too bad. I found it more enjoyable than Rambo 3 and Rocky Balboa. Plus it was gory as all get out!

I'm really looking forward to this, if only to see all of these guys in one film. Imagine the egos on the set! Who gets the biggest trailer? Who gets more screen time? Who's featured on the poster? Answer: Stallone, Stallone, Staloone.

The "new" action movie, which to me began with Jason Statham's first Transporter, was already dead by Transporter 3, when he jumps the car, does a spin and uses a dangling hook to remove a bomb attached to the bottom.

It also has Eric Roberts, "Stone-Cold" Steve Austin, former UFC Champion Randy Couture, among others.

@MetalHead: Yup, I included them at the end (except Steve Austin, who I'll add) Oh, and you're not tripping, it did say "possibly" initially, which was a mistake! Thanks for keeping me on my toes!

@thegreek: I agree, Statham is bad ass! It was the script that called for that "stunt," so I don't blame him. BTW, I had a few drinks with Statham at the Hard Rock after Comic-Con last year (true story). He is a really, really cool dude in real life! Just totally chill.

Sorry Brent, again, I misread your article. (I thought the second part was an advertisement so I didn't read it at first.)

I have been following this movie for almost a year now. You'd be amazed at some of the names who originally were there but had to bail. Danny Trejo, 50 Cent, Forrest Whitaker and a couple others that I'll add once I remember them. Also, Stallone had been actively trying to get Van Damme AND Segal, but apparently neither would do it. You never know, though, because Bruce Willis was only added just a couple weeks ago.
bsprecher
bsprecher - 9/29/2009, 8:55 AM
@MetalHead: Van Damaged and Segal are fools to turn this movie down. It could only help their careers to get some high-profile exposure like this. Of course, maybe they got beat up by Stallone back in the 80s and they're still shy...

BETWEEN SLY AND GOVERNATOR, SLY HAS STILL GOT IT, ARNOLD IS STARTING TO BECOME THE GOVERNOR PHYSIQUE, BUT FOR ME..ID MUCH RATHER HAVE HIM FIX CALIFORNIA.SLY HAS STILL GOT IT...AND I LIKE HIS MINDSET ON SEEING AN ACTION FILM...THAT KIND OF WAY IS MISSED IN ACTION TODAY AND WHEN HE COMES BACK OUT IT INSPIRES..

@Swiftsword: They weren't mingling with us commons actually. I had to sneak into the VIP area when the HUGE bouncer was distracted by a short skirt. Once you're in VIP, everyone treats you like you belong there. I walked right up to him, toasted him and we bullshitted for about 10 minutes until a really hot woman came up to talk to him. Within about a minute, Statham's wife or girlfriend came over, grabbed his hand and literally yanked him out of the VIP area. I never saw him again after that.

Oh, yeah, and a few seconds later Jamie Kennedy came up and grabbed my ass like it was a baseball. He didn't say anything, just gave me this weird grin. I bailed after that happened.

Brent, actually you would laugh if you read why Van Damme turned it down-- he said (not an exact quote but it made my brother and me burst on laughing) that he wants to focus on projects where he can show/use his ACTING SKILLS more!
