WONDER WOMAN 1984 Director Patty Jenkins Reveals Why She Turned Down The Chance To Helm JUSTICE LEAGUE

Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins has revealed that while she's been offered the chance to direct a Justice League movie in the past, there's a very good reason she turned the opportunity down...

Zack Snyder directed Justice League, and Joss Whedon was later brought in by Warner Bros. to helm the reshoots. However, at some point in the past, Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins was also offered the opportunity to take the helm of the DC Comics ensemble.

It's unclear whether she's referring to those reshoots, Snyder's movie, or even a completely separate Justice League project, but a massive team-up movie isn't something which interests the filmmaker.

"Unlike other directors, I don't really care about shared universes, continuity, and that kind of detail," she told Premiere Magazine (via ComicBook.com). "I’ve been contacted to make a Justice League movie in the past, and it doesn't connect to me. Too many characters."

Jenkins also talked about why she enjoys working with Warner Bros. "I really like the people who work there, but they want full control over their movies. The director is under control. Yes, it can happen. Furthermore, It shows immediately if a director cannot impose his/her vision. When this is the case, I get the impression that these people are doing a different job than me.”

"I love comics, but I've come to superheroes through films," she continued when asked about her love of the genre. "There is in me this desire to emulate compared to the movies I saw as a child. A certain spirit that reigned in those times. Is that relevant when I shoot? I don't know."

It's certainly interesting to think about what a Patty Jenkins-helmed Justice League would look like, but clearly not something the filmmaker is giving any thought to right now. Zack Snyder's Justice League is coming to HBO Max next year, but we don't know what comes for the franchise beyond that.

I think Jenkins is without a doubt the most talented and capable director in DC's orbit, but it does take a different skillset to do team-movies. It's more like TV, really. Not just because of the shared universe dynamic, but the ability to give each character in an ensemble credibility in the story.

You can do a solo movie and have Etta Candy just be there for a gag, but be entirely irrelevant to the story. But when you've got a team of heroes, they all have to have some narrative and thematic purpose.

It's the difference between preparing a dish and preparing an entire menu.

@Spock0Clock - I don’t know if she’s better than Matt Reeves. Unless you only mean directors who’ve already had DC films released.

@tmp3 - I'm open to reevaluate when I see more of what he's doing.

@TheJustinHammer - At this point there is no DC continuity at all

@TheJustinHammer - No it's certainly not part of the DCEU as we've known it so far. Race-swapping commisioner Gordon was the final confirmation.

@TheJustinHammer - His mothers are ussually a step above Patty

But do the they reach the 'Martha' level Zack Snyder has achieved...?

@tmp3 - (Would you still respect me if I told you I've never seen them?
I never liked the franchise, so skipped the reboot and I'm fine having missed the boat, I think.)

@Spock0Clock - Haha, I don't think my respect for you would break on your interest, or lack thereof, in big movie franchises. I was never a big Apes fan until I saw Rise, and went back to see the others and really only liked the first Heston one.
I do think you could see the new trilogy blind, since it feels like its own thing. Reeves only did the last two though.

At least she is honest about it. An ensemble isn't a very easy film to make. It is a huge juggling act.

Wise decision.
It's good that she realized that and i also think that a JL type of movie is not...her thing.

But Wan on the other hand...i know he could handle them quite well, i f*cking know it.

But we wont get another JL for...heh, for a long ass time, fam...

take too much control from the director ruins the movie. they need either find a different director that shares their vision or only give some advises instead of demands. the worst of marvel movies are the ones with demands, depending of how heavy the demands are, worst the movie will be.

"Unlike other directors, I don't really care about shared universes, continuity, and that kind of detail,"

We know. We’ve seen the Wonder Woman 84 trailer which not only contradicts BvS but your own movie.

@Ha1frican - The Steve Trevor part looks like a continuation. He was dead, and she apparently wished him back to life, somehow. And the line from BvS, about her "retiring" from heroism for 100 years, moreso contradicts the essence of Wonder Woman. There's just no way they could've made that line work, without betraying the character. Once she enters Man's World, she's basically ride-or-die, no matter what.

@WAKANDABATMANFOREVER - except why did she care so much about that photo which was the linch pin of her arc have so much value of he came back at a later time? The bookend of that movie was reclaiming the hope in humanity that she lost when she lost Steve, and reclaiming the one tangible memory of him that existed being a representation of that. The whole beginning and end of that movie now makes no sense if there was further resolution to that later on

@WAKANDABATMANFOREVER - as for her retiring it really depends on the version. There’s versions that would just as soon cut someone’s head of as not, it’s not in keeping with all versions, but many are cynical toward and very resistant to the world of man after leaving, and I don’t think her being so bogged down by that that she basically says “this isn’t my problem anymore” is that out of character for her but again it depends on the version

So those who haven't watched the first one are just supposed to know what the hells going on with Trevor? And if you don't care about continuity why bring him back in the first place?

@SuperManes - Let's maybe watch the movie for context and details first?
99OPTIMISTPRIME
99OPTIMISTPRIME - 6/1/2020, 9:24 AM
@SuperManes - Basically, she doesn't care about OTHER directors' continuity. Most strong-willed directors don't. And WB really underestimated that, with the DCEU.

He lack of interest in continuity and detail doesn't inspire confidence in her WW sequel...

@FearTheLiving - it seems to explain why she is making movies in another time compared to the JL time.... during a prior world war, during the 80s.

"[WB] wants full control over their movies; the director is under control...it shows immediately if a director cannot impose his/her vision."

I was told DC was strictly director-driven; this honestly sounds no different than the other studio.

Not a gripe, merely an observation.

@EskimoJ - It was director driven when Zack Snyder was calling the shots, but that changed once BvS came out
