THE SUICIDE SQUAD Star Margot Robbie Teases "New Sides" Of Harley Quinn In James Gunn's Movie

In a video promoting tomorrow's DC FanDome event, Margot Robbie talks about fans getting to see a new side of Harley Quinn in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad after she's reunited with Task Force X...

The panels that are set to take place during tomorrow's DC FanDome have all, understandably, been recorded in advance. A preview from The Suicide Squad panel has already been shared by writer and director James Gunn, but the DC Comics Twitter account has now revealed comments from star Margot Robbie.

The actress played Harley Quinn in 2016's Suicide Squad, and later reprised the role in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). However, based on her comments in the video below, it seems like Harley will undergo even more changes when she's reunited with Task Force X.

"I always have such a ball playing Harley Quinn. Every time I’ve done it, I learn new things about her, and this movie’s no different," Robbie says. "When Harley’s put in a different group of people, and put in a different place, you’re going to see different aspects of her personality coming out, depending on how she feels about those people or the things she’s doing. So you get to see new sides of Harley again, and she’s in a new group of people, a big group of people, and it’s insane. As always, it’s crazy fun."

It's certainly going to be interesting to see how Harley changes after her emancipation from The Joker, though it's hard to imagine her being happy about falling back into the clutches of Amanda Waller.

Frick yeah. One of my most anticipated upcoming movies, James Gunn will nail it.

I believe Jimmy boy will finally win everybody's heart with Margot's HQ.

TBH, i ALWAYS like her in the role, it's everything else that always f*cking sucked or was mediocre af.

@Doomsday8888 - Yeah she was good in SS, but in BoP she didn't even have the accent.

Hope James Gunn gives her more of her classic Paul Dini characterization.

So many more actresses would have been more fitting for the role, actors with better comedic timing, even if Robbie is overall a better actress

@dracula - Yeah. Britanny Murphy was my choice for Harley after watching 'Sin City'.

@GothamSon - my choice was Alison Brie after watching Community, especially after I watched Glow.

Robbie's harley is decent, but lacks the intelligence and fun of the original character. Her version is just too close to Joker level crazy

@dracula - Yeah. To me, Harley and Joker work best in kind of a period 'Bonnie & Clyde' way, like in the animated series. It's better than just 'crazy for the sake of crazy'.

We live in a world where Harley Quinn's future in cinema is more secure than Superman's.

@RageDriver2401 - interesting considering box office:

MOS higher 600 millions, BVS higher 800 millions, JL just under MOS.

SS 700’s, BOP 203... well I guess you need 3 movies each to judge that fairly which would be after TSS, which could go above it below BOP who knows, but everything post this apocalypse will come with a huge asterisk. However, TSS was in production or done or whatever before that horrifying 203. Seems like Harleen got lucky and Clark got a raw deal.

Margot as Harley is frustrating to me. I didn't see improvement with a different script from SS to BoP. Just feels like every line of dialogue screams "Look, I'm playing a crazy person".

I don't know if she needs to tone it down or turn it up.

@Kurne - neither, she’s not funny. That’s incurable.

Never was a fan of the 'blue-pink' look in the first movie. Classic harlequin outfit (red-black-white) is still the best. The 'Arkham Knight' skin gets it right:

But um, I see why people like the Robbie look and why it's become so popular among cosplayers :D

Couldn't stand her more than 20 minutes in Birds of Prey.

Finally watched Birds of Prey on HBO. I needed two viewings to get through it as I found the first hour was really kind of bad. The second half improved when I went back to it, but generally I found Robbie’s Harley an unappealing character.

Here’s hoping that Gunn was able to bring out something far more fun from her in his take.

One other note... I never liked the overly sexed-up Harley of Suicide Squad, so I get the desire to get away from the male gaze with this take. But the thing is, male views of sexy often go hand-in-hand with youthfulness, and when you go away from that yet still paint your lead actress’s face a pasty-pale white to keep true to the character, she ends up looking older...

And suddenly, what was a cool, young character that teens wanted to emulate is now looking like a mom who raided her 16 year old daughter’s closet thinking that she could still pull it off.

Making the character fully work likely requires a more drastic overhaul in general, imo.
