Evidence that this couple not only are together but were actually married in the end SPOILERS!

So the series finale of Legend of Korra premiered online and overall it was a good ending. Lots of great action and a real heart wrenching scene in the mix. The ending to the finale though has divided fans of the show with some supporting and loving it while others deny it and dislike it. Well I am here to show that not only are these two a couple but the creators basically married them in the end.

So spoilers as I said in the header but in the end of Legend of Korra it was almost undeniably confirmed Korra and Asami are a couple. A major cartoon series in America has a lesbian couple and it was a cool moment. Some people out there deny it and say they are just good friends and in no way attracted to each other let me give some evidence to say otherwise.

Back in the episode "Reunion"  when Korra returns to Republic City since she left 3 years ago. She, Asami, and Mako meet in a restaurant to catch up and while there Mako finds out that Korra had been writing to Asami the entire time she was gone. Mako is very upset at this news and is angry with Korra for not communicating with him. Well in the finale Mako and Korra have one final conversation and there Mako tells Korra that no matter how crazy it gets he will always have her back. Now at face value this seems like nothing but if you read between the lines and see the subtext this is Mako lashing out at Korra and Asami coming out together and then accepting it. When Mako finds out about them "communicating" he is angry but this is him dealing with latent feelins he has for Korra and possibly Asami and maybe some jealousy or societal ideals of masculinity being crushed that his two ex girlfriends are now a couple. Then in the finale he has come to grips that they are together and tells Korra that he supports them and are happy for them.

Then later when Korra and Asami have a moment together they talk about each other. Korra apologizes to Asami that she was away for so long and not returning sooner. Now Korra doesn't say to Asami but it is heavily implied by the dialogue and the tone in their voices that it is about Korra not returning sooner to be with Asami. Asami then goes on to tell Korra how happy she is to have Korra back and how she is not sure how she would deal with losing both Korra and her Father in one day. Now this line is important because she specifically says Korra not Mako, Bolin, or any other character she specifically says Korra. Her father is a given it is her father but to specifically name Korra says that  she cares for Korra well beyond the levels of friend and loves her which Korra reciprocates.

Now that I have gotten through that let me movee on to the last scene. Korra and Asami are going to take a "vacation" to the Spirit World together. If you watch the scene as I put at the  bottom of this article you will see that their vacation is not a vacation but their honeymoon as they wed at the portal to the Spirit World. You have to flip the scene around because the video is mirrored and originally Asami is on the left and Korra on the right. Well Korra and Asami are walking to the portal as they approach it they begin to hold hands walking to the portal. When they reach the portal they face each other and take each others hands looking into each others eyes as they go through the portal. Now look at the scene as they "walk down the aisle" notice all the spirits there they are watching the proceedings much like the guests do at the wedding. Then the placement of Korra and Asami are important to because Asami is on the left and Korra the right which are the traditional positions of the bride and groom, bride on the left groom the right. Korra is far more of a tomboy and between the two is more manly then Asami so her taking the position of groom makes perfect sense. Now when they reach the portal like many wedding couples do they face each other and take each others hands during the proceeding like Korra and Asami do as they go through the portal. The show ends not with a final battle or even the awesome marriage of Varrick and Zhu Li with possibly the funniest proposal scene ever. "Now lets go attach these flying rust buckets on to the giant smashing thing! This is how I always pictured our engagement.". But with Korra and Asami being married off by the creators as they go off into the Spirit World.

Agreed, beautiful episode. I really really liked the Korra Series, of course it is not even close to the first. But I really enjoyed the Legend of Korra.

As for the whole elephant in the room, all I have to say is, about time someone has the courage to show acceptance.

"I may not be the same, but that's not important, no freedom till we we're equal, damn right I support it.

@MileHighRonin

It is quite hilarious to read on threads that people actually believe that Korra and Asami are "just friends" and in no way a couple. These people are either beyond naive or purposefully refuse to believe it. They say nothing is confirmed and the ending is open to interpretation because they didn't kiss. It is like minor critical thinking and analytical skills are completely loss on them. The creators all but put a giant neon sign above them saying KORRA AND ASAMI ARE IN A LESBIAN RELATIONSHIP. WE JUST CAN'T SHOW THEM KISSING BECAUSE OF WATCH GROUPS AND CENSORS BUT IF YOU HAVE ANY INTELLIGENCE YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE THEY ARE MEANT TO BE IN A RELATIONSHIP.

are they together yes are they married no. it was a good episode and i did not expect that apparently this was done last minute, varricks wedding was cool loads of cameos from minor characters we saw in the last 4 books. although i dont think they planned this originally.

@kinghulk

I meant more of a symbolic marriage between the two. Yes there is no priest or anyone to marry them but again like I said the final scene is like their wedding. The spirits are the guests watching them be wed. They both walk down the aisle and finally take the position on the altar like a couple married would do.

@KingHulk they did not need a priest. Their souls have chosen each other, no law or priest, in my opinion, are meaningless when it comes to true love. Commitment to another because of sincere love is true marriage, not a law or religion.

I will always like ATLA better, but Legend of Korra is very good too, worthy successor. The series ending was both beautiful and realistic, I'm very glad they went that way.
BTW This ending has been noticed on various places in the internet already: "The series's final shot, hinting at a relationship between Asami and Korra, was seen as pushing boundaries of LGBT representation in children's TV."

I never meant to act like I was some insightful genius that saw this that no one else saw. I know this is popping up all over the internet I just wanted to throw in my two cents and give my reasoning to anyone who seriously denies that they are a couple. Seriously if that was Mako in place of Asami there would be no doubt that Korra and Mako were a couple it really is only because it is Korra and Asami that people think it is ambiguous in any way.

@Odin

I also agree that I found ATLA to be the stronger series but I give Korra it's due besides season 2 which I found to be just an overall bad season it was a strong show. I think it's biggest issue was how short each season was only being somewhere between 12-14 eps a season hurt any real chance for real pacing or character development hence why a lot of things feel rushed. We never got the chance for a character to have a story like Zuko and his series long story of change and redemption. The studio board strikes again a potentially great show brought low due to budget cuts or constant studio interference. Firefly, Sym Bionic Titan, Green Lantern the Animated Series, Young Justice, etc... shows cancelled or out right sabotaged by their channels much like Nickelodeon did to LOK.

I really feel like this was a cool decision, except the fact they couldn't just come out and say lesbians means they had to spend the last five or six minutes of the episode in subtext, and this robbed us of other characters endings, are bolin and opal together? Mako go back to being a cop? How about showing milo actually chilling out a bit? I feel like TLA ended much more satisfyingly in terms of all characters, you know where everybody stands at the end. The way LOK ended was all about korra, and she had a fine ending but all the other characters got screwed.

@Odin

It is like back in ATLA with the death of Jet. They never showed that Jet was dead because they couldn't due to FCC regulations kids being killed is a big no no but the show heavily implied that he was in fact dead. Showing Asami and Korra kiss would have thrown up huge red flags by the FCC and other watch groups so they couldn't show it. They had to use subtext to tell people that they are a couple without implicitly showing it.
