Akira Movie Update

The groundbreaking Japanese Anime will now be two movies, directed by a first time Irishman!

Akira is one of my all time favorite comics, and although I'm not a huge Manga fan, I loved the movie too. So when I heard it was getting the live action treatment I was exited... but skeptical.

the source material(6 volumes) is being split into 2 movies directed by Irish filmmaker Ruairi Robinson who is making his feature debut. The script for the two films is being written by first-time screenwriter Gary Whitta.

Akira was adapted into an anime movie in 1998, and while it was a very good movie, to say it was unfaithful to the comic would be an understatment! The manga takes place in a vastly larger timeframe than the film and involves a far wider array of characters and subplots. Through the breadth of the work, Katsuhiro Otomo explores themes of social isolation, corruption and power which though hinted at in the movie, are never fully realised because of the running time.

The rumor is that while the manga was set in Neo Tokyo, the setting for the new movie will be New Manhattan! And will star and be produced by Leonardo Dicapprio. This came as no surprise to me because i new that if a live action movie was ever made, it would be completely "Americanised"..but it could be cause for concern because the original manga has so many intricate little details that could only be Japanese. Lets hope they decide to go for a BLade Runner vibe with the movie, thus keeping the Japanese influence

For those unfamiliar with the story it concerns a young biker gang leader named Kaneda, whose close friend Tetsuo gets involved in a government secret project known as Akira. On his way to save Tetsuo, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader. The confrontation sparks off Tetsuo's supernatural power leading to bloody death, a coup attempt and the final battle in Tokyo Olympiad where Akira's secrets were buried 30 years ago.

I for one really hope this movie gets made. Any comments are welcome and Shaman i dont know if your a fan but if you are theres some juicy casting calls there too.

New Manhattan???

Not sure how the american audiences would feel seeing the old Manhattan getting blown up on the first scene of the movie, and I do agree the story has many many subtleties that could only be japanese. This could be a possible strike one for me.

As for the director, I had seen his short animated film "fifty percent gray" and I think it's great. Just saw "silent city" looks .... amateurish with a budget, the acting, the pacing, the editing... I didn't like it. Saw his "house on dame street" looks like his first short film, some potential but still untaped potential. So I don't really know what to think of him, although for a first timer, studios could not fork the millions of dollars an Akira movie will need, so who knows how this will go.

Now start production on Domu!!!!! a great manga by Katsuhiro Otomo.

I want to see that made into a film, I mean a deranged psychic old man fighting a 10 year old psychich girl, destroying the apartment building they live in, the old man forces the tennants to commit suicide, the girl tries to save them. That is one great movie, as long as it has good casting and good direction.

yeah im worried about the first timer thing as well. i mean i havnt wathed any of his short films and im sure he has talent but something like this should really be given to an established director. anyway i guess wel have to wait and see. latest rumors are that dicaprio will play Kaneda and our old pal joseph gordon levitt will play tetsuo!

ror, if you want to check them out they are at http://www.ruairirobinson.com/short_films.htm

I really really recommend fifty percent gray.

Ok... bad bad casting choices... I can't picture Leonardo DiCaprio in a badass bike, or Levitt really pissed off (he seems to be sad always) and is it just me or is Joseph Gordon Levitt trying to remove his artsy indie image, either that or he changed manager, I mean GI joe, Akira... he used to just act on unknown artsy low budget films. That casting could be strike two for me.

WTF!!! I thought the best thing about Leo being attached to this film was that the budget would be HUGE, and that he would require an experienced staff. Bullsh!t.

I'm actually happy about Levitt being cast, i've said it before and i'll say it again....best actor of his generation!

yeah hes a great actor, but remember this is just rumor for now..or at least, nothings written in stone. big age gaps though, i know Leo looks young but does he look the same age as Levitt? Both Tetsuo and Kaneda were only supposed to be 16 in the original manga..which i always though was far too young for theyr exploits but thats manga for ya! So i was glad they wer gonna age em up a bit for this movie. But have they gone too old?

Actually the original anime was adapted back in 1988, so I think you must have typo'd the year it was released. Can't wait for the adaptation myself, big budget doesn't mean anything if it doesnt recapture the cyberpunk feel of the original movie. Bladerunner vibe, that could work i guess.
