WB Puts AKIRA On Hold..Again!

The project has once again been set to "pause" at WB, with increasing budgetary concerns cited as the reason. Word is that the movie is not dead yet, but can Akira survive yet another set back?

THR report that Warner Bros. planned live action adap of the classic Manga/Anime has hit yet another bump in the road. This time budgetary issues have prompted the studio to halt production and "send everybody home".

From THR..

The project, which has been through several incarnations, is being shut down in the face of casting and budgetary issues. The production offices in Vancouver are being closed, with below-the-line talent and crew told to stop working. “Everybody is being sent home,” according to an insider.

If the issues cannot be resolved, the project could end up being shelved entirely, say insiders.

The latest director on board the project, Jaume Collet-Serra, has already got the budget down to half of what the previous incarnation under Albert Hughes would have cost, but apparently that still isn't enough for WB. With Garret Hedlund the only actor officially signed on, they feel in order to secure the likes of Kristen Stewart, Helena Bonham Carter and Ken Wattanabe that further cuts need to be made. But before fans jump for joy it seems all hope is not lost for the movie as "Sources close to the project say Akira isn't dead yet. “It’s a very resilient movie,” says one insider. “Warner Bros. just won’t let it die.”.

Warner Bros. has got to learn that to make this great, they have to give this film a good budget. Whoever is running WB is a [frick]ing dumbass.

Ask yourself this question:

What anime EVER translated successfully to a feature film?

However this guy juuuussst might work...

Putting aside the stupid Americanization of a uniquely Japanese story, $70 Million for an Akira movie is not enough. Even $100 Million is a tight squeeze.

Oh and Akira, ideally should be two films. Film one should be the revolution in Neo Tokyo and Tetsuo's rise to leader and god. Then film two should be the military counter attack and Tetsuo's search for Akira with Kaneda searching for a way to stop his friend from destroying all of Neo Tokyo in his growing madness.

Good... If ur gonna make a film do it like the manga and anime.
It worked for the first one.
They should try throwing in some latin actors, they look like anime and shit lol.
They dont have to cast all white actors.
They shouldlnt follow M. Night Shyamalamadingdong's race bending in the Last Airbender.
Lets just hope it doesn't end up like Dragonball:Evolution

Put it on hold forever as far as I am concerned. I take one look at the image posted in the article and think about Americanization of this film and my head wants to explode.

@NoRegrets

Are you serious? Nothing is sacred in Hollywood because all they care about is money, not churning out great films.

And come on; it's obvious they're not trying to get the budget OR the cast right. If they were they wouldn't have cut the budget from $180 million (which is accurate for a story of this scale)... to $90 million... and now trying to dwindle it down to around $50 million.

Don't even get me started on the cast...
