Speaking this morning from an early press day for The Book of Eli, screenwriter Gary Whitta was asked about his contributions to an early draft of the live-action Akira film, a project that, since it's original announcement, has met with varying degrees of progress, including rumors that it would be split into two films and that work on the project had stopped altogether.

"...I haven't worked on it for about a year," says Whitta, "...The version I worked on was about going back to the source and doing the manga version. We were going to adapt the whole six-episode graphic novel."

Of interest is the note that the project would encompass all six volumes of "Akira" creator Katsuhiro Otomo's manga. The famous 1988 anime adaptation was based primarily on the first two volumes. Whitta also made mention of Otomo's own (albeit slight) involvement:

"We got notes from [Otomo] and we kept in touch, but we never had a formal meeting or anything. The script I worked on was very, very preliminary. We did a couple of drafts of the script but, when I was there at least, it never got wrapped up to the point where I think he would get really hands on."

At the moment the film is now at the hands of screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby who recentley worked with the movies "Iron Man" and "Cowboys and Aliens". It is not clear whether this duo will be starting from scratch or expanding on Whitta's work.

hmmmmm...looks like Akira is in good hands...at the moment.

"They don't keep you in the loop after you're done," says Whitta, "...now I go on the internet to find out what's happening with it like everyone else."

Will this movie be live-action anime crap? Or just another blockbuster success? Only time will tell.

ROCK ON!!! and MABUHAY!!!

As big a fan as i am of the comic and the Animated movie, I really hope this happens. As long as they stick to the main story and don't take too many liberties with the characters, they can set it in Neo-Dublin for all I care.

They need a solid R rating for this movie. The animated movie was brutal as hell, if they go with a pg-13 the movie will suck.

So yeah I REALLY did not like this anime. So I'm not too concerned with the live action but I will agree it needs to be Rated R for the fans to enjoy it.

InstigatorGIRL-- Yeah, you have to watch it a few times. I saw it when I was little and didn't get it but I liked the animation. I'd never seen animation so dark and serious.

Neo-Dublin works for me.

Maybe that's what they had in mind with all that talk about Leo producing and playing Kaneda. His Irish accent will most certainly suck though.

I may just do that Betty! Thats mad IG, Akira is the only anime I DO like. The rest I have seen are jumpy, screechy juvenile shite.

Akira is a classic for Anime fans, and I think it is a really good idea to go back and do the actual Manga and follow all 6 chapters, 3 chapters per movie... I hope the two new guys can do this as much justice as it sounded like Whitta was going to do.

I hope they don't westernise it. I'd like it to be more like Death Note than huge and epic like Watchmen. Keep it in Japan and keep the characters Japanese.

I would definitely watch it, but your all right it need the R-rating and also Kaneda should be [frick]ing asian, then I will be fine with it.

Not gonna happen folks. If this is made its made American. I believe the original idea was to have the city of Neo-Manhatten completely Japanafied like in Blade Runner..basically Japan own the place so they would still have the influence, but I wouldn't hold out much hope for any of the main characters being Japanese.

The anime is awesome but it is nothing compared to the manga. The whole story makes a lot more sense if you read it.

Betty - I highly recommend them, though get ready for a long sit down session. Each book is about as thick as a Marvel Essentials tpb and there are six total.

I really don't care what the race or location they choose will end up being, so long as the get the idea and feel to the story. Although it will be sad to not hear them shouting "Kenadaaaaa!" and "Tetsuooooooo!". Somehow "Jooooooooeee!" and "Jaaaaaaaake!" don't have the same feel.

@Jerusalem@ good point... It would be nice if they kept their names and had Asian actors, it just doesn't sound the same without em.

"Miiiiiiike!!"

"Jaaaaaaames!"
