Deadline reports that Rupert Sanders' live-action take on Ghost In The Shell may have cast its baddie. According to them, British actor Sam Riley is in talks to play The Laughing Man: a Catcher In The Rye-obsessed terrorist/hacker. If he signs on he'll join Danish actor Pilou Asbaek as Section 9 second in command and all-round tough SOB, Batou, and Scarlett Johansson as the "augmented-cybernetic human" leader of the covert team, Major Motoko Kusanagi.

The story "follows a female special ops cyborg who leads an elite task force called Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. Section 9 is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka’s advancements in cyber technology."

Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing this big screen adaptation of Ghost in Shell from a script by Bill Wheeler. The movie is scheduled for release on March 31, 2017.

Can there be at least one Japanese actor or is that too much to ask for?

This is the thing about Ghost In the Shell's whitewashing. The story only works in Japan.

Edge of Tomorrow you could get away with. Cowboy Bebop doesn't really matter, as well as a few others. But the world that Ghost In the Shell made is so embedded rich into Japan that it's criminal to completely take that away.

Again nothing wrong with American Adaptations of anime/manga, however, filmmakers are missing huge opportunities when they do the whitewashing cop out.

She'd make a decent Motoko.

I think casting Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanag is totally typecasting. C'mom she is already Black Widow and Lucy. That is the most predicable casting choice after Milla Jovovich.

I wouldn't compare this whitewashery to the Gods of Egypt. The setting in this film can be moved anywhere in the world, and the future is multicultural. There's a lot that is forgivable depending on where the plot goes.
But white guys playing Pharoahs will always be revisionism, even if the subjects are fictional.

Some would have said the same about Big Hero Six or Godzilla.

The most ridiculous case of whitewashing I've seen recently was when Ridley Scott cast John [frick]ing Turturro as an Egyptian Pharaoh in 'Exodus: Gods and Kings'

Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, John Turturro, and Sigourney Weaver

I think I know why they cast Scarlett Johansson now.
Easy female actress that's famous enough to lead the film and she's so damn robotic in her acting, ala Black Widow and Lucy.

"Hollywood only cares about diversity and pleasing SJW's" they said. God, the comic nerd community really p*sses me off when it spouts BS like that. I mean if you're upset with a change because you're a fan of the character and the actor they hired doesn't look like him/her (i.e. a different race) then that's fair enough.

But don't start spouting the mantra that Hollywood hired the person because "OH THEY WANT TO BE ALL PC AND WANT DIVERSITY" because 1) you have no idea that's the case 2) there are more logical explanations i.e they wanted that specific actor for the part and didn't think the fact he was a different race really mattered.

Rant....over...

@BritishMonkey BINGO! She looks good in tight skimpy outfits, has name recognition and her acting's robotic. MCU Black Widow is such a fail.

@PrinceofDenmark
You can never please everyone, especially SJWs who will moan about everything, including why cyborgs who's "race" is never mentioned in the source material "don't look Japanese."

I think the Laughing Man is a great arc to cover for this movie, I've never watched the condensed version of the story, so not sure how well it will translate to 2 hours, but glad they aren't going with the Oshii stuff, which while I love, isn't really right for Hollywood.

It make sense to make all the characters white, it's the only way Americans would go watch the film.
