Warner Bros. Sign A Director For ROBOTECH

Warner Bros. Sign A Director For ROBOTECH

You might say, no Robotech, no Pacific Rim - and you could add a Hell of a lot of other properties while you're at it. According to THR, Nic Mathieu has been chosen to helm a big-screen adaptation of the classic robots VS aliens Anime..

For those not familiar with Robotech...just read the Pacific Rim synopsis! But seriously, this anime paved the way (unless I'm mistaken?) for the whole giant robot VS Alien malarkey that seems to be such a big trend in Hollywood right now. The movie has actually been in development at Warner Bros. since 2007, and has seen a host of writers come and go, but this is the first time a director has officially been signed. Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire will produce along with Matthew Plouffe, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell. This will mark Nic Mathieu's - a commercial director - first movie gig, but he is also attached to direct The Wind, a David Keopp-written sci-fi project that WB picked up on the strength of his presentation. It looks like we're in for a lot of metal-V-alien carnage over the next couple of years. You game?

All these Robo-, robot v. aliens movies in development how about Power Rangers, He-Man, Thundercats. No [frick]ing way we should have got a Smurfs movie and a sequel before Thundercats movie or a Dragon Ball Z movie(A good one)

YES! I've been watching an episode of Robotech here and there over the past few weeks. Was just talking about whether this movie would ever happen earlier today with a co-worker.

I hope they do well with it.

Anyone remember the Robotech model kits in the early 80's?? Damn them things were hard as hell to assemble, especially with the Japanese instructions!

I wouldn't say Robotech paved the way for the bots vs aliens craze (I'd say that was Voltron; Beast King GoLion was out before Macross).

I wonder which story it'll follow more...Macross' or Robotech's. Personally, I liked the original Macross story. It got sort of twisted up when it was imported because the belief was that American kids wouldn't be able to follow it.

It would be nice to get Evangelion live action. The stuff Weta Workshop did on concept art was awesome.

@Egg yeah, I [frick]ed up a few of those. Got [frick]ing glue everywhere. Roy Fokker dying was the most intense moment in cartoons ever at the time.

This could potentially be really bad ass. At that time I don't think we'd seen an afterschool cartoon tackle as hard hitting issues as this one did. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe transformers and all that other crap came after this, and never even came close to the dramatic scope of this one. I'm not sure how long it had been around in Japan but in the US we didn't really have anything like it at the time, and I'm talking what like, 1984 I think it was? Maybe '85? I could look it up. Anyways, as far as space soap operas this one was the king and there is a ton of good shit to make movies out of for decades with Robotech. Now we finally have the technology to do it some justice on the big screen, so it's probably a good thing is just now becoming a reality. Bitchin. Bring that shit.

@superpooper: I hear ya! I gave up after my second model & just used all the cool parts to customize a Revell SR-71 and a couple other planes! Glad to see there's at least one other guy on here old enough to remember those!
Egg
Egg - 1/24/2013, 11:07 PM
and yep, the Robotech cartoons were on in my area about 2-3 years before Transformers & GI Joe took over everything, I'd say about 83.

Hollywood's track record with adapting anime to the big screen is terrible.

Fingers crossed Robotech turns out awesome!

The episode that deals with Roy Fokker's death and the manner in which it occurred and it's execution was commendable. The western format was a half hour long animated cartoon that ran Saturday mornings from '84-'86 in my hemisphere growing up and yes seeing a gerwalk.., this will work if the internet geek vocal minority allows such.

Well this sucks balls. I guess I can just throw out my 130 page Robotech script I wrote. DAMN!

Pacific Rim looks great and WB cant seem to make a good CBM to save their lives. So, I wonder if after this and Pacific Rim, WB abandons Comic Book movies for anime/big robot movies.
