Detective Pikachu is set to be released just a matter of weeks after Avengers: Endgame but everything we've seen from the first live-action Pokemon movie so far points to the chances of it being a box office success being very high indeed. Now, this latest trailer pretty much confirms that.

If you don't want to know about the trailer's big reveal, then scroll down and stop reading now.

Still here? Well, along with countless Pokemon in what looks like a live-action adaptation of everything we loved about both the games and TV show, Mewtwo finally makes his presence felt...and he's magnificent. There have been rumblings about him showing up and that is now confirmed by this sneak peek.

Honestly, it's hard to imagine this being anything other than awesome at this stage, and it seems like Warner Bros. has a brand new franchise on its hands which has the potential to eclipse both Harry Potter and the DC Extended Universe.

@bobevanz - I cant find the angle I need to get fully on board for this. It's like if the first ever Dragon Ball live action movie came out and it looked amazing and the graphics and outfits looked perfect, but for whatever reason they decided to make the first movie about Oolong or Chioutzu... just kinda like huh? Why?

Sure they are somewhat popular side characters but deserving of the main focus of the first live action movie? Where is Ash Brock and Misty? Where is Professor Oak and Gary? Where is Jesse and James and Meowth? Where are the iconic characters that endeared the masses to the charms of Pokemon? The Pokemon themselves are only a part of why the show and movies were so popular (and I know the games used different "characters" but the story structure and appeal was more or less the same.

I honestly and unfortunately dont think I'll be 100% on this movie until I just go see it and decide for myself. But honestly just like I will forever question what were they thinking rushing out the DCEU and making Justice League the 5th installment before introducing the main cast in solo movies, I will likewise always question why this is the first movie you start your Pokemon live action movies with. Detective Pikachu should have been the first spin off after the trilogy of Ash and the Pokemon League Tournament movies.

@Dart - Pokémon is a A LOT more than it’s anime adaptation. Hell the anime doesn’t even compare to the lore and possibility of the games. You can literally do a live action Pokémon film and have an original storyline, as long as you get the actual Pokémon right you’ve accomplished A LOT.

@Dart -
I understand what you mean, but this could arguably the birth of actually amazing live action anime films.

In regards to Pokemon alone they have planned; Detective Pikachu, Detective Pikachu 2, Detective Pikachu 3, Mewtwo spin-off movie and a Red/Blue movie

If this is succesful it could fundamentally change the entire landscape of film. Superhero films could be entirely replaced and the shift could be almost instantaneous.

Avengers Endgame as the finale of the MCU's storyline followed by Detective Pikachu that could birth an entire new cinematic universe alongside making anime mainstream. Imagine if Detective Pikachu was the second highest grossing movie of the year?

@ItsMilesMorales - I never said the anime is all Pokemon has going for it. Obviously the anime is the tip of the iceberg, but you ask anyone who the most famous human character from Pokemon is, you will never find a person more widely acknowledged and recognized as Ash Ketchum. When starting a franchise its always wise to put your best foot forward if you can, that's why the first Xmen movie wasn't led by lesser known Xmen but rather the most popular roster, because that popular recognition and a proven successful formula shows that there is demand on a mass appeal.

I never once attempted to minimize the vastness of what the Pokemon universe has to offer, I'm merely pointing out how this wasn't the strongest product to introduce live action Pokemon to the masses. A Lord of the Ring style grand adventure with a group of trainers becoming best friends as they traverse different regions and train their Pokemon all the while a Shadow organization of charismatic and dim witted Team Rocket members fail to sabotage them every step of the way.

Maybe they couldn't figure out a plan to translate that epic into a trilogy so they decided to just do a straight forward Detective story with Pokemon because it's easier to do. It's a safe and unchallenging story, one with plenty of tropes and comedic openings for Ryan Reynolds to do his thing.

It's just not the Pokemon movie I want. I dont wanna see a Justice League movie that stars Blue Beetle, Hourman, The Question, Robin and Huntress... maybe after a few actual Justice League movies sure because the DC universe is vast and full of potential just like Pokemon.... I hope you get what I'm saying.

I don't know how I feel about the reveal. I mean, he looks really cool, but at the same time they could've kept him a secret until release. I mean, it's the first Pokemon live-action movie headlined by a talking Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds, there was no need to sell it even more.

still, day 1 opening, 1 billion worldwide easily, Pokemon craze 2.0 incoming (or 3.0, I guess Go counts as the second).

also, THE THEME SONG IS THERE! AAAAAHHHH!
Nebula

@Spidey91 - They should've not revealed it. PROBABLY SPOILERS: Especially given that there's been multiple leaks which claim he's in the film and an antagonist (only to be revealed that he's actually an underling of a human villain). Apparently Legendary are also developing a Mewtwo-centric spinoff.

@Bokis - it's sparingly from 0:19 to aprox. 0:45, just the beginning part of the song

Spidey91

@blackandyellow - the Pokemon that bursts through the explosion is called Mewtwo, he's essentially the biggest recognizable villain the franchise. well, "villain", he goes back and forth between movies.
he's a pokemon genetically created in a lab by scientist and has a deep-rooted hatred of humans for using Pokemon for their entertainment. also, he's crazy f*cking strong, being a psychic type Pokemon means he can blow sh*t up with just thinking it. think Magneto if he had Jean Grey's powers.
