ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Star Evangeline Lilly On Whether Hope Should Regularly Change Costumes

Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe tend to change their costume frequently, but now Ant-Man and the Wasp star Evangeline Lilly comments on whether getting a new super suit fits Hope's personality...

Those of you familiar with the comic book incarnation of the Wasp likely know that the hero has the habit of changing her costume, so much so it's difficult to identify one look as her classic outfit. But with only one film spent suited up, it's unclear if Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne has this same characteristic.

However, while appearing at Fan Expo Boston, the Ant-Man and the Wasp star shared (via ComicBook.com) her thoughts on the idea of Hope donning a new suit and noted a big difference between her character and the Janet van Dyne in the comics.

"In the original comic books, she was a fashion designer. Janet Van Dyne was a fashion designer, and she loved to change her costume. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with women liking clothes. I like clothes! But for me, it would be such a distraction from Hope being a very serious, no nonsense scientist. I don’t think she cares that much about what she puts on her body. I think that when she goes to the store, she chooses things that are practical. Whatever she needs to get done, that’s what goes on her body. She goes home and gets done what has to be done. So if Hope was a fashion designer, okay, maybe that’d be fun. But she’s a scientist, so no."

Considering everything we've seen from the character so far, Lilly's response makes a lot of sense. Though, with Marvel's history of altering costumes between films, they'll probably find a reason to give her a new outfit that stays true to Hope's pragmatic attitude

But what do you think? Would you like to see Wasp in a new costume? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

You can only wear the same pair of underwear for so long.

@MosquitoFarmer - I thought the same. HOPE she takes a bath daily, also.

There's a couple of ways they could go with giving her a new suit. They could make a yellow and black one (a la Janet from the comics) or they could give her the bright red/silver design that Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet wore in the first Ant-Man.

I'm more partial to the red/silver, although the black/yellow suit from the comics is classic.

I don't know how practical this would be in the films, but I hope they find someway to make her go without a helmet like in the comics. That'll look perfect along with her pixie/bob cut.

You're not Janet Van Dyne, Evangeline. You're just a pretender based on a one shot villain from a long forgotten alternate reality and the only thing dragging down the franchise.

She makes a good point, but I could see Hank having a Tony Stark-esque love for tweaking and upgrading his work. Improving the functionality and having the appearance change along with it makes more sense than simple aesthetic changes.

@BIGBMH - So far, it does seem like Hank tends not to go through forty two different variations on suits. The first Ant-Man suit Lang wore is the same one Hank wore in the eighties, and we've only seen minor variations since.

I would like to see a lot of diversity in Wasp suits going forward (and lots of Hope appearances in the MCU), including a bare-arm model like the post-credit suggested. Lilly's got the guns to go sleeveless and Ant-Man & Wasp played loose enough with the physics that it doesn't feel like the life-support is as much of an issue.

Just let the Russos, Markus, and McFeely go nuts with Wasp. They're wizards.

@Spock0Clock - He doesn't do it to the same degree as Stark, but we have already seen a modification of the Ant-Man suit in the second film. Pym also wasn't using the suit for about 30 years, so he wouldn't be inclined to make improvements during that time.

Tony never wears the same armor twice, so it's not like "fashion obsessed" is the only reason to frequently change your look.

I want the suit to have more gold and ditch the red lines, otherwise I love it as it is

She needs a black and yellow costume. Her current one is shit

Not sure why they would even ask her this question, as it isn't her decision.

The action figure toy companies need these costumes to change so they can sell more toys, and I imagine there are others (directors, etc.) who would want to do modifications for various reasons (cost, comfort for the actor, more functional, new features, etc.).

I guess they ran out of questions to ask and had to think of something. Or they have no idea how these things work and probably shouldn't be asking these questions, as it makes them look ignorant.

Looks like Ant-man and Wasp will finally release in Japan, Italy and China in the next 2 weeks.

Which should bring its box office to the $600M mark passing Ooze-pacalypse, as it should. And since there's nothing else out maybe I'll take the kids to see it again.

One of the things I liked about the Avengers was Jan's evolution of costumes. She was bubbly initially, but ended up being on of the teams best leaders. Wish we could see that transition in the MCU over the years with Jan but Hope is a different character.

@lawndart - Yeah, Hope is competitive for one of my top 5 MCU characters. I really like her, but she isn't Janet. As much as I would love for the movies to hit all the great elements from the comics, there are always going to be compromises and innovations.
