Edgar Wright Explains How ANT-MAN Will Stand Out

With the film hitting theaters on the heels of The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Batman Vs. Superman, Ant-Man director Edgar Wright is asked what's appealing about the tiny hero. Check out his answer!

Promoting The World's End's home release, director Edgar Wright spoke with Entertainment Tonight briefly about Ant-Man. With the Marvel adaptation coming four months sooner than its initial release date, now opening not too far from The Avengers sequel and especially Batman Vs. Superman, Wright was asked how the film will stand out and appeal to audiences amid the CBM-packed 2015 summer. "I want to make him into a badass [laughs]," he said. "No, I always liked that comic and I always thought it would be an interesting thing to see in live-action. That's why I [showed] that Comic-Con test that we did for Marvel, to show this fight scene like a proof of content, like this is what the action is going to look like. I think a lot of people who maybe don't know the character sort of see that test and go, 'Oh, right, I get it. It's like an action film,' so that's the idea. I think people will be surprised by what kind of movie it is, and so in that respect it's something that I know is going to stand out because it's got a very different story and is a very different [film]."

On Ant-Man's tone, whether there'll be humor & action or 'straightforward hero entertainment,' Wright says, "Well, I think the Marvel movies are funny, you know? I think generally the Iron Man films and The Avengers is funny. They're not ever in the comedy section, but they are funny and entertaining, so I think it'll be something in a similar vein to that." What do you think?

I wouldn't mind if this movie was a comedy. Just look at what he did with another CBM, Scott Pilgrim vs The World. I thought that movie was fantastic.

why would you ask about the tone? thats such a waste of a question. just watch one of his movies and throw the disney element in there and thats what your tone is. pretty much the same as every marvel movie.

he/she was probably one of the people that thought iron man was going to be a dark film. cmon man!

@ MARVELPSYCHO79

I hate when people try to act as if Disney is pulling Marvels strings. I may not agree with everything that Marvel does but Marvel does its own thing. The only thing they do is pay Disney there share of the profits after the fact. The only way Disney would get involved in Marvel affairs would be Marvel just started making a series of flops. Disney and Marvel relation ship isn't like Google and Youtube. lol

I think the formula for Marvel is starting to feel repetitive (The Dark World being the biggest example-Hero vs Villain for McGuffin) and Marvel/Edgar Wright have a great chance to shake things up.

MAKE IT A STRAIGHT UP COMEDY

Lets face it, Ant-Man/Hank Pym (I know that might not be the identity yadayadayada)is gonna be a tough sell for audiences. We as fans understand AM/HP is very important in the Marvel Universe. But the fact that his powers are not that interesting, mainstream audiences have never heard of him, Hank Pym is not a hero he's a scientist foremost and doesn't like having to fight, and the fact is seeing "Ant-Man" dramatically put on a poster as if its another Thor/Iron Man screams- Dorky. Trying to hard. Lol What?

Having Paul Rudd's comedic skills will only add to this film's ability to stand out on its own and be kind of tongue in cheek. Whether or not you approve of the amount of laughs in MCU films you cant deny that it helps each movie be more enjoyable, and one of the reasons mainstream audiences have for the most part have made Marvel more successful than DC in the movie business.

Edgar Wright. Paul Rudd. Ant-Man. Funny.

Cant go wrong.

Give Marvel props for having the foresight potentially by greenlighting GOTG and ANT-MAN way before people started whining about the Marvel movie formula, for both possibly could give that formula a good kick in the pants and surprise people with what that studio can do.

batz11 - Marvel is part of the Mouse Empire, but Iger more or less lets Marvel (along with other fiefdoms like Pixar) do their own thing because they make money by making it themselves, and why mess up something good that makes money?

Remember, Marvel wanted Disney to buy it so they could access their incredible marketing/media machine.
