Aquaman is a character that hasn't always been taken very seriously in comic books and other related media. While a recent comic book run by Geoff Johns helped breathe some new life into the modern iteration of the character, it hasn't stopped the general public from poking fun at the seemingly "silly" hero. According to Aquaman director James Wan, he plans to change that with his entry into the DC Extended Universe, and it may be darker than Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was.
It's no secret that Wan is known for many horror films, including his co-creation of the Saw and Insidious franchises. In a brief interview with Empire, Wan referenced his film resume when describing what kind of film Aquaman would be. "Look at the sensibility of my movies, from Furious 7 to the horror films. You can extract the kind of movie I might make of Aquaman." Wan cautions, however, that despite sticking with the darker tone of the DCEU, it doesn't mean there won't be any room for fun in his movie. "The kind of filmmaker that I am, even my darker horror films are still very fun. And I think that's important for me and the kinds of films I make. The film I'm here to present, Lights Out, is a fun horror film. And I think Aquaman is a character who has...You know, been made fun of a lot over the years, and I think it's kind of fun to show a really different, cool, badass side to this character - but at the same time, let's not forget to have fun with it."
Aquaman (played by Jason Momoa) was briefly glimpsed in Batman V Superman, and certainly didn't behave in the most friendly manner. It's safe to say that Wan's film will be distancing itself from the more colourful aspects of the character in order to present a more realistic portrayal of the King of Atlantis that audiences can take seriously. It's also important to remember we'll be seeing the character in 2017's Justice League film, which should give us a better idea of what to expect in his solo film.
Aquaman is due for release on July 27, 2018. What do you think of Wan's comments? Do you want to see a dark and gritty Aquaman? Sound off below!
