Following in the footsteps of The Avengers was never going to be an easy task but with Joss Whedon back at the helm, Avengers: Age of Ultron gave it a good try back in 2015. Introducing new heroes and a terrifying villain in the form of Ultron, the sequel brought an awful lot to the table and generated a lot of excitement among fans. While Thanos will no doubt be an even more formidable threat in Infinity War, we're now taking a look back at the movie by sharing some incredible concept art.

Today, we're putting the focus on The Vision and the many different designs Marvel went through before settling with what ended up on the big screen nearly three years ago. Since then, the character has continued to evolve and never gotten a new look; could that change in Avengers: Infinity War

We'll have to wait and see but these pieces could provide some clues in regards to what's next for the hero! We also have some very cool alternate takes on The Vision's sentries, so be sure to click either one of the buttons below to check this list of artwork out in its entirety. Once you've done that, feel free to let us know which of them is your favourite by sounding off in the comments section.

More Robot Than Man

Paul Bettany's face can quite clearly be seen on the left (Marvel used a mixture of practical and special effects to create The Vision) but the version on the right is definitely more robot than man!

A Very Different Vision

The second Vision here looks quite a bit like the version from Young Avengers but the other is pretty much like nothing we've ever seen in the comics and would have been interesting to see on screen.

The Vision Phases

The Vision's powers are portrayed in a very interesting way on the big screen but the ghostly effects to show him phasing look a lot different here and the red glow from his eyes is particularly cool.

Gold And Green

Marvel clearly played with a lot of different colours while designing The Vision and these yellow and green versions are sure to generate discussion. Is it better or worse than what we got, though?

The Vision Takes Shape

As you can see, these versions of The Vision look like they've been torn straight from the screen and it was clearly at this stage Marvel decided what they wanted to do with the fan-favourite hero.

Ghost Vision

Before Avengers: Age of Ultron was released, there were rumours that The Vision we'd see would be silver. That didn't prove to be the case but it's clearly something Marvel considered at one point.

A Whole New Vision...For The Vision

Well, these are...different. While Marvel ultimately turned to the comic books for inspiration with The Vision, they clearly considered some very unique designs for the character in this movie.

Ultron Sentries

Yesterday, we brought you a look at a variety of designs for Ultron but these are his sentries. Many fans argued that they looked better than the villain himself and these guys are very imposing.

Armed And Ready

These guys look quite a bit different to what ended up on screen and the focus here appears to be on the weaponry Ultron has given them to ensure they can take the fight to Earth's Mightiest Heroes!

The Sentries Take Flight

These alternate designs show Ultron's sentries taking flight with various effects added. Marvel ultimately decided to go with quite a simplistic version similar to what it looks like when Iron Man flies.

The Sentries Take Aim

Here, we see Ultron's army taking aim at The Avengers in a variety of ways. Essentially, we're seeing their arms convert into weapons and it's hard to decide which of these looks the coolest.

Stellar casting and terrific job bringing the character to the big screen.

Sorry not related, but we get a small snippet of rough cut footage from M:I 6 in this video. It's the scene were Tom Cruise breaks his ankle.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - This is awesome. But at the same time, god that's rough. And Tom's reaction, as well as the other 3, but especially Tom's reaction is pretty priceless. But this is why Tom is the best at what he does and why he's so great. Always give 150%.

Man I love Rebecca Ferguson :-)

@HeavyMetal4Life - Yeah, the dude is awesome. Still climbing up the building and continuing the shot even after the fact. I love the Graham Norton show. He always gets the best out of his guests.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Really badass. What a trooper. No one else would have done that. I said this before on another thread, but I wish that the academy awards or whoever would recognize actors and stunt actors that do incredible stunt work. Its an unappreciated talent.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Yeah, I've said that before too. They really should be paid as much as actors, if not more. They are literally putting their lives on the line in many cases.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Exactly. They don't get enough recognition or attention, outside of us handful of fans.

i really like the first one on the left for Vision.

i like what we got, but that simplified look would have brought more attention to Bettany's face, and focused the audience on his slight facial expressions in order to read him.

but maybe that was too limiting.

Do we feel that Rhodey will resent Vision, despite it being an accident?

@Vigor - yea!

@Vigor - Rhodey doesn't seem like that type of person to me honestly, like I feel his years in the military and what he tells Tony at the end of Civil War are him owning it as a risk that comes with what he does. I also think Tony will have found a way to get his legs functioning for him again though.

@Vigor - I hope they at least explore that relationship some... I feel like they must.

I like that the Vision is involved in subplots, from his infatuation with Wanda to looking haunted after that friendly-fire incident. That's classic Avengers storytelling there.

@knocturnalzen10 - I can just imagine a cartoon skit of this playing out

Tony and Steve sitting opposite sides of the table, glaring at each other

Rhodes wheels up in his wheelchair to the table and has to reluctantly ask vision to pass the salt

Vision and Wanda giving each other the Googley eyes
