AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Co-Director Talks Infinity Stones Portrayal And Focusing On "Important" Characters

We have a lot of questions about Avengers: Infinity War, with one of the biggest being how the Infinity Stones are going to be portrayed. We know that they're all incredibly powerful so when combined, Thanos is going to be unstoppable. However, don't go thinking that the Stones will all end up blending into one as co-director Joe Russo has made it clear that they'll all be portrayed in different ways.

What that means is we can expect each of the Stones to be utilised by the Mad Titan for different reasons rather than just giving Thanos a bunch of random powers he can use against The Avengers.

"Each gem has its own special power. We had to put a lot of thought into how we would represent those powers so it was clear to the audience. Not only are you dealing with a lot of characters, you are also dealing with the stones, the gems, and there’s a lot of them. So for people to keep track of all of it, we had to get really specific. I won’t divulge how we use the Reality Stone, but we do use it."

That should shake things up in a very interesting way and it's interesting that Russo specifically mentions the Reality Stone as the last time we saw that was when Volstagg and Sif handed it over to The Collector at the end of Thor: The Dark World. It clearly won't be staying in his collection for long!

As for which characters Avengers: Infinity War will focus on, Russo wouldn't name names but it sounds like the spotlight will mostly be on the likes of Captain America and Iron Man rather than Spider-Man and the other heroes who will be making what sound like relatively minor cameo appearances.

"The story really
centers who you would expect it to center around, so our more important characters. This is a culmination film ten years in the making and we are pulling the main story threads from all of the different franchises into one unifying narrative. So any of the important characters are going to be in this film and they are going to have something important to do."

If important characters include Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Scarlet Witch and Black Widow then I'm happy.

@TheUnworthyThor - I'm just confused as to why he thinks the reality stone reveal was interesting. We know it has to get out of the collection to form the gauntlet we see in the posters. It's just a duh thing.

And yes I expect this movie to actually focus mostly on the main original 6 (Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, Tony, Steve and Thor) with all the other characters arcs/stories being secondary. You can pretty much say that Hulk has somewhat of a trilogy now

@XelCorp - Agreed. They did mention Thanos is sort of the main character, and other than him, I could see Strange and Panther having significant roles, maybe Bucky. I feel like the rest of the Avengers and the Guardians would be supporting. We already know Parker will have a role similar to his role in Civil War.

I can easily imagine Thanos using the reality stone to bring back Quicksilver and make Wanda get the mind stone from Vision head for him. This would be evilest way for Thanos to get the mind stone in my opinion.

@Lebaguette - oohh shit... You know in the leaked trailer there's a shot of Wanda looking like she may have to make a choice that she doesn't wanna make but she does want to. The following shot shows Vision looking a little upset. What if one of the members of the black order try explaining to her that if they let Thanos acquire all of the stones/use the soul stone then he could bring her brother back. I feel like he's still gonna factor into this story somehow emotionally. These are the Russos, I don't expect his appearance to just be a throw away. But I'd say the soul stone is capable of doing that not the reality

@Lebaguette - I don't know about that. Maybe he can say he's using the reality stone to bring him back when he's really just tricking her somehow. Seems counter productive to his ultimate goal to actually bring people back and totally in line with the character we've seen to use deception to get what he wants.

Gotta love how much thoughts the Russo Brothers/MCU directors and writers in general put into the script so that things make sense story and character wise, not just for the cool factor.

Also the Russos' directing style is like a more comicbooky Christopher Nolan's, which is awesome.

I expect them to use every gem tbh...
But since they specifically mentioned the one that can change reality...eheheheh.

@Doomsday8888 - idk if it can really change/alter reality in that type of way. I think it's only doing what we saw it capable of doing in The Dark World which is tearing the fabric of reality apart (almost in a X-men The Last Stand Phoenix style)
