AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Concept Art Reveals A Comic Accurate Take On Spider-Man's Iron Spider Costume

Some new concept art from Avengers: Infinity War has been revealed and this shows a much more comic accurate take on the Iron Spider suit that you'll wish Marvel Studios had ended up using in the film!

The Iron Spider costume was first teased at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming but we didn't get to see it in action until Avengers: Infinity War. While it was based on the Iron Spider suit from the Civil War comic book storyline, it didn't bear much of a resemblance to that and was instead a mostly original creation which borrowed elements from the source material.

Well, this newly surfaced piece of concept art from the epic superhero ensemble reveals that the wall-crawler was very nearly given a much more comic accurate costume.

As you can see, it appears as if the classic red and blue suit is there (it's hard to say for sure but the blue may have been swapped for the dark red Peter Parker wore in the comics) but the golden logo has been laid over that and it looks, well, spectacular! An argument could definitely be made that this looks better than the version we ended up getting too.

The Superior Spider-Man

The Superior Spider-Man was divisive among comic book fans but this would have been very cool to see that costume on screen in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The black works really well and seeing as Marvel Studios clearly wanted to differentiate its wall-crawler from what came before, this would have been a smart way to achieve that as would have many of the alternate designs listed below.

Ben Reilly: Spider-Man

These two designs instantly remind me of Ben Reilly's stint as Spider-Man and seeing as Peter's homemade costume was inspired by the character, it would have been no bad thing for this design to be used. Perhaps Marvel is holding off on it in case they choose to adapt The Clone Saga one day.

Some Unique Alterations

The changes made here don't appear to be based on any one comic book run but they all go a long way in making Spider-Man look different. The various shades of blue work particularly well with the lightest version arguably closest to some of the wall-crawler's earliest adventures in the source material.

A Different Style Of Logo

The spider emblem on Peter's chest has always been a big talking point and what we see here are radically different to what we're used to. All of these work well and it was a smart move by Marvel's team of concept artists to find a way to incorporate the legs into the overall design of the suit itself.

These are all pretty cool, right? However, Marvel also faced the difficult task of imagining how the hero's suit would be brought to life when he discovers it has an A.I. The "Big Time" run in the comic books put the wall-crawler in a variety of different outfits and those have clearly inspired these.

Which of these alternate suits is your favourite? Do you think Marvel should have come up with something a little more unique for Spider-Man: Homecoming? Share your thoughts in the usual place.

@AndrewHolland - Sad when the article writer will fudge the truth just to get a headline.

I definitely prefer that Iron Spider to what we got, I like the glowing eyes and suit accents but that was it and really didn’t like that it was all CG. It’s really interesting that some of these suits seemingly had the Venom style logo I wonder if Marvel was originally intending to go in that direction before Sony decided to move forward with that movie

@Ha1frican - Kind of like that costume though.

@Ha1frican - Doing the Giant logo like that wrapping around the bust always looks feminine to me…. Maybe not surprising, since it was originally the 2nd Spider-Woman design. But incorporated into that suit it especially does so, making him look like he’s wearing a bustier.

@SpookyCipher - I definitely don’t hate it, my favorite design since the concept art for Civil War came out has always been the Superior Suit I’m glad they are adopting that one for Far From Home

Most of these look bad. I really want some different shape because it looks like the same costume coloured differently.

Plus, i'm glad they never went with superior spiderman, waste of the suit.

@WackyBantha - if you're giving a literal interpretation of the mcu spiderman the baby should be wearing an iron man suit.

I like some of these designs better, the Iron Spidey was was too shiny/fake.

That's so much better. Has an old school Vibe to it. But, I don't see it as war armor like I do the one they went with. I assume that is why they used it.

I definitely wish they'd gone with the concept. That was my only problem with IW. The iron spider costume didn't do it for me.

I like the normal blue and red suit with the big black spider on it, but superior spider-man’s second suit is still my favorite

Who sees that concept art and DOESN'T use it?! looks sick af

I love all the red and black concept arts for Homecoming too, the first red and blue one with the big spider is amazing

In my opinion, that suit looks much better than what we got in the movie.

The only reason I can see why they didn't use it was because people were already complaining that his suit was already too much like 'Iron Man Lite.' To add the big gold features to it would have only added fuel to that fire.

kaethar - 11/1/2018, 7:31 AM
@ymk700 - The suit is literally called the Iron Spider suit. Anyone complaining about its similarity to Iron Man is an idiot who should be ignored. Point is that this design is bad ass and a missed opportunity.

Manmarvel

That superior suit is dope! Some of the others though? One looks like he rummaged Gwen Stacy's closet. But the big symbol suits make me wonder if they had plans for what I had hoped for in Infinity War. That Peter was going out into space and bring back a little something extra with him and have a black suit be in the after credits but nooo. We get a dead Peter and a Peterless Venom.

Superior and Ben Reilly costumes are amazing. But I think the artists are having too much fun creating their own costumes.

I honestly don’t wanna see a superior spider-man costume unless it’s Otto lol. One of the few things I feel very purist about.

.....I don’t think I said that correctly. Even still.

The design they used in the movie seemed a bizarre choice to me. So many designs they could have used but went for a horrible new one.

Iron style material like the one they had but with this would of been sweet.
Also no web pattern would look better.

I actually really liked where they were going with this design.

It has a mix of his homemade look with the lighter blue while still retaining a classic feel.
