AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Director Joe Russo Explains Netflix/MCU Crossover

A lot of fans have been begging to see our favorite Marvel heroes meet up with the Defenders from Netflix. However, director Joe Russo has something to say on that.

With Avengers: Infinity War coming up soon, plenty of theories have floated around on what exactly will go down. Some that make sense, and some that may be nothing more than just a pipedream. One of those pipedreams consists of the Netflix Marvel superheroes; like Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and The Iron Fist, appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They both live in the same world, so why not? Well, Joe Russo explains why it may be out of the realm of possibility. 

 

"We've all considered," Russo said to Premiere.fr. "But the trick is that we already have at least sixty characters with whom we must tell a story! And it's hard enough to communicate with Taika Waititi, Ryan Coogler, Scott Derrickson, Peyton Reed and James Gunn at the same time, not to add all the showrunners and TV crews to this. The latter is also led by totally different people. So it's practically impossible. Our job is to focus on the Marvel film world and offer a satisfying climax."

 

The work that goes into making these movies are certainly complex. So just thinking about adding television characters to the big screen, just makes things even more complicated. Would it be nice to see the Defenders in an upcoming Marvel movie? For sure. However, it seems pretty unlikely at this point. 

Unless they're keeping something under wraps, us fans have to face the facts that our "Netflix Avengers" are staying put where they are.

Makes sense, you can only stuff so much into a movie until it’s a overburdened mess. It seems some things work better in a comic book than the big screen.

@Batmanfailedme - they could also by lying to protect a spoiler. They've done it before. I find it hard to believe that the spinning ring is over new York and they do nothing.

@Batmanfailedme - Star Trek did it all the time. Worf was on a whole different Trek show and they STILL found a way to put him in the movies. No excuse!

Plus in the comics we had MANY secondary characters that had the exact function and don't even have lines.

I get the difficulties and complications, but the fact is that if hey wanted to use the characters they can, they just don’t seem like they have any real intention

All we really know is that Feige and Loeb talk so they don't step on each others toes character and story wise. When it happens, it happens.

It used to bother me they didn’t cross over but now after pretty much everything since Daredevil season 2 I’m kinda happy. Looking forward to a newly cast Iron Fist popping up in a Strange film someday or Daredevil in Spider-Man.

You let the genie out of the bottle by letting all the TV characters meet up with the Avengers and you can't put em back in and tell their individual stories on netflix and tv budgets.

@aflynn - Why not? Heroes In the comics go back to there usual spots. And I can’t think of a reason why any of them would be avenger material apart from cage. I doubt daredevil would,join. No way would Jessica join. And luke would probably stay for his town. Danny might though,

Idk. I think they know how much the fans would cream if they showed up on the big screen. Part of me still holds out hope that they're lying to us for now and theres going to be a little scene in Avengers 3 or 4 of the street level guys guarding New York. They don't even have to meet the Avengers, they can just have a little scene.

Phase 4 perhaps. I'm not any of the peeps to demand a crossover, they're firmly planted on their sides of the field. Like, even New York is a huge place, of course it's plausible DD wouldn't run into Spider-Man or Doctor Strange, that place is huge. However, I do think it would be exciting and ambitious if they were to assemble some sort of crossover. And I do think it would just be fun and exciting to give a couple easter egss in the movies from time to time. But they started this whole thing at a super important time.

The Russos hadn't even shot Civil War yet and they were just announcing Infinity war 1 and 2, both films they're now directing, and DD had JUST come out at that point, I think, so I think we should give it a little bit of time, I mean, they JUST introduced Defenders last year, lets get a second season of that out before we start jumping the gun prematurely. The Netflix universe is still relatively young, I mean, like only 3 years old, it took them 4 years to get the Avengers together, so lets just consider all the issues that they'll have to go through just to make something like this work.

@ScarletWarlock - New York the state IS huge, but NYC (where most of these heroes are located) is not. It's pretty realistic to think they would run into each other more than once or twice a year.

I would love them to have Luke Cage in the MCU with Hulk. Colter just owns that role perfectly.
I know he's not the almighty Black Panther, but he was there first and does a fantastic job.

Dinofrio's Kingpin NEEDS to being the the MCU Spiderverse as does Daredevil. It just makes too much sense.
Maybe sometime during phase 4, but I hope they don't wait too long.

Didint bp show in civil war which in April 2016 while Luke Cage was in September?

@DeadCipher - May vs September, but Luke Cage was starring in his own show and had was established as a solo character in the MCU before BP.

BP was just a supporting character in Civil War.

People will still complain, no matter how many times they explain why its logistically near-impossible.

Regardless of that, we got hints that Phil Coulson still being alive will be dealt with in these films somehow, so we all just have to wait and see. Perhaps they have some surprises in store for us!!
