Karen Gillan recently teased Nebula’s role in
Avengers: Infinity War, revealing she had no idea how important her character would be. Gillan played the cyborg and daughter of Thanos, Nebula, in both
Guardians of the Galaxy and
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and is set to return in next month's
Infinity War as well as next year’s
Avengers 4.
Having only appeared in one shot of the Super Bowl TV spot and the poster; she hasn't been prominent in the marketing thus far but that doesn't make her any less significant to the film, at least going by what Karen had to say to
Screen Rant in a recent interview:
I had no idea that this was where the character was going. I genuinely signed onto the role thinking it was eight days of filming and then I was going to die in the first Guardians. Three movies later and there’s three more to come out it’s, like, crazy. It’s funny because I read the Infinity Gauntlet, which is what the new Avengers films are based on, as research for my character because it’s her sort of biggest moment within the Marvel comic book world, and then to find out they’re making a double-bill feature based on that, I was just so excited actually because Nebula gets some really cool stuff.
It’s unclear what timeline she’s referring to when she says “three movies later and there’s three more to come out” given that she’s only been in two so far and has been filming on two more, but this may be a suggestion that she’ll be back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2020. Many fans are concerned for the character's well-being leading up to Avengers: Infinity War, believing that she may meet her demise in the upcoming Avengers sequel, this may stifle that speculation.
What’s most interesting here, though, is the slight tease of “really cool stuff” in Infinity War. Not a lot is known about Nebula’s role, but this does suggest she will get at least one moment of spectacle. The lone shot of her revealed so far has her on what appears to be the ruined planet of Titan, suggesting a showdown with Thanos or meet-up with her fellow Guardians as well as a couple of Avengers.
What do you think about Nebula's character thus far? How do you think she'll play into Avengers: Infinity War?
