Guardians Of The Galaxy Originally Had Only A Small Cameo In AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

The Guardians of the Galaxy played a major role in Avengers: Infinity War and sequel Avengers: Endgame, but filmmaker James Gunn has revealed the original plan for the team in the epic ensemble movies!

Avengers: Infinity War gave the Guardians of the Galaxy almost equal billing with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and the movie belonged just as much to characters like Rocket and Gamora as it did Steve Rogers and Spider-Man. However, things were very nearly vastly different.

During a watch party for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 last night, filmmaker James Gunn confirmed that the original plan was for the space faring team of superheroes to have only a cameo role in the Russo Brothers's epic ensemble. He didn't elaborate on what that would have entailed, but it's possible that after rescuing Thor, the team would have set off on their own adventures.

These comments track with what we heard about Avengers: Infinity War in the build up to its release in 2018, and the majority of fans were definitely surprised by the role they played in the film.

Avengers: Endgame would later shake the team up in a lot of ways, and the creative decisions there have almost certainly affected how they will be portrayed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Well good thing it became more because that’s, like, the biggest selling point of Infinity War.

Anyone else find the similarities between Ruby and Josh to be a little too coincidental? What’s your best Josh/Ruby conspiracy theory?

@Saintsinnister - "What’s your best Josh/Ruby conspiracy theory?"

That Josh and Ruby are anagrams of each other in some language that was lost to history. But it doesn't actually mean anything, since they're just two different people who don't know each other.

@RageCipher - Damn... That is interesting.

I think it worked much better for Infinity War to give the spotlight to the Guardians instead of to Cap's Avengers. I can't imagine it otherwise now, and I wonder if that would've affected my opinion on Infinity War being the best Marvel movie to date

I wonder how this would’ve changed the Soul Stone sequence.

@santoanderson - I assume that would've been their only scene

It seems counter-intuitive that they weren’t building to a big cross-over with the Avengers considering how much Thanos stuff was seeded into the GoTG and their backstories. It would have been very weird for them to simply put in a cameo appearance and then take off in the giant Thanos-based story unless there was the thought that Thanos would survive for a future resolution with his daughters.

Well, they made the right choice by expanding their role because we had amazing interactions and Thanos gained more gravitas by having his two daughters in the movie......oh and the memes, so many memes were born.

Good thing they were given a bigger role. Their inclusion was great.

@NegativeNerd - except for Star Lord's universe destroying temper tantrum.

@Ryguy88 - ... the same tantrum that’s totally something his character would do?

He’s a kid in a mans body. He reacted very similarly when he found out Ego killed his mom.

@DaHyro - I just dont like that that was a plot point that affected the entire franchise.

@Ryguy88 - To each their own. It was a frustrating moment, but it's something Star-Lord would do after losing so many important people in his life.

@NegativeNerd - I agree. It wasnt out of character, just not an interesting way to give Thanos the upper hand in that fight.

@Ryguy88 - Yep, and I think the scene was a success with so many people being upset about it. Social media was crazy.

I wonder how Star Lord learned of Spiderman's secret weakness, the headlock.

I can’t imagine infinity war without them. It wouldn’t work unless marvel planned on introducing other new heroes. Glad everything turned out great
