No, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - PART 1 (Obviously) Hasn't Been Retitled AVENGERS 3
Despite some speculation that the next instalment of The Avengers franchise would be dropping a subtitle and going for a good old number, it's now been made clear that the movie remains untitled...
In Deadline's report about Brie Larson being in talks to play Captain Marvel (more on that can be found here), they referred to Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 as "Avengers 3", leading some to theorise that the trade had discreetly revealed the title of the movie despite the fact that the studio always does that type of thing themselves. Common sense pointed to them using that as a placeholder because it was recently revealed by the Russo Brothers that both Infinity War movies will be retitled, while it's fair to say Marvel going from The Avengers to Avengers: Infinity War to Avengers 3 didn't make any sense.
Obviously cautious about any further misunderstandings, an interview they've just posted with Joe and Anthony Russo quite clearly states that one of their next projects will be, "the still untitled Avengers 3, is set to begin filming later this year." So, yes, as many of you no doubt already guessed, Deadline is simply referring to the third Avengers movie - which is no longer titled Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 - as Avengers 3, because, well, it's the third Avengers movie and doesn't have an official title.
With the next two Avengers movies set to be released in 2018 and 2019, Marvel has the luxury of not needing to rush when it comes to revealing what the actual titles are, though it wouldn't be remotely surprising if we hear something official when production starts later this year and they issue a press release similar to the one which confirmed the full Thor: Ragnarok cast. For now though, we can relax knowing that Marvel hasn't suddenly forgotten how to choose a decent title for their movies.
