There are a lot of things that stand out in the first trailer for
Avengers: Infinity War, and now that I've gotten the chance to watch it one or fifty times, let's get into the details. One of the parts of the trailer that
I was most excited for was seeing which heroes get paired together. While the most intriguing team-ups are probably being saved for the actual film, we still got a good look at some potentially awesome character groupings. Here are my completely nondefinitive rankings of these subteams:
1. Steve's Crew, Hulk, and the nation of Wakanda
One of the coolest shots of the trailer is basically a comic book splash page brought to life. We see Steve Rogers (Nomad?) charge into battle with the Hulk, Black Banther, the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Falcon, War Machine, and new character Okoye. Okoye, played by
The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira, will make her debut in
Black Panther this February.
Based on what we've seen of her in the trailers for both films, Okoye will be able to hold her own in battle.
It's nice to see Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff reunite, even though Scarlett Johansson's
comments about their relationship make it seem like there won't be a happy ending there. The way
Captain America: Civil War ended, it makes sense to see T'Challa and Steve Rogers together, and there are some interesting character similarities that they could bond over. Both of them are symbols of their respective countries, even if Steve has abandoned the title of Captain America for now.
In
Thor: Ragnarok, Bruce Banner talked about his fear of losing his human identity if he turns back into the Hulk again, but the trailer seems to suggest that he's able to become "the other guy" when he needs to. However, there is no guarantee that he'll be able to turn human again after this big battle.
2. Doctor Strange, Wong, Hulk, Iron Man
The trailer confirms that we'll get to see the
MCU's two Sherlocks finally meet each other. The scientists and sorcerers get together at the start of the trailer, presumably because Thanos is targeting the Time Stone. If this is where the invasion starts, then hopefully Banner will be able to quickly turn himself into the Hulk again. We see this group in what looks like the Sanctum Sanctorum, and also in the New York streets after some serious destruction has happened, but we don't yet see them fight together.
Iron Man can be seen in the middle of the action throughout the trailer, as he comes face-to-face with Thanos and takes a pretty hard punch to the head. We also see him bring out the Hulkbuster armor, but don't get confirmation on who is inside. Spider-Man also gets a lot of solo action shots, but since both characters are in New York, it makes sense that they would fight alongside each other at some point.
3. Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy
The final shot of the trailer features Thor meeting the Guardians for the first time, and opens the door for some quality banter between Star Lord and the new King of Asgard. Since Asgardians have a pretty different culture than the areas of space the Guardians are familiar with, it's likely they won't all get along right away. Since most of the action in the trailer takes place on Earth, the role that this team will play in the movie is pretty uncertain, but we can bank on them eventually getting in on the action.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ended with Nebula choosing to go off and try to kill Thanos by herself, so it's no surprise we don't see her in that final shot. However, she is confirmed to make an appearance in the film, so we'll have to wait and see at what point she will reunite with her sister. Also of note is teenage Groot, who has hopefully become less moody since we last saw him.
