So far,
Marvel's Avengers developer Crystal Dynamics has shared individual character spotlights for
Captain America,
Hulk, Iron Man, and
Black Widow. This weekend, it was Thor's time to shine.
The God of Thunder was featured in a brand new gameplay, highlighting his super powers and abilities during the A-Day segment of the game. Like the others, there's a real physical sense of the power when playing as Thor. Equipped with Mjolnir, Thor exudes "the force and chaos of lightning in combat."
"Wielding Mjolnir, Thor is able to seamlessly transition between ground and air combat at will, launching enemies into the sky and effortlessly chaining together attacks," Crystal Dynamics explained.
“Mjolnir also grants Thor the most powerful ranged attack in the game, as it’s able to pin down almost any foe, locking them in place for crowd manipulation or further combos."
In addition to his gameplay, actor Travis Willingham, who brings Thor to life in the game, talked a bit about his role as the God of Thunder and what makes him so special.
"Thor is a GOD. Can anyone else make that claim? I didn’t think so - thanks for playing," Willingham said when asked what makes Thor the most super. But explaining that he also has a human element, Willingham added:
"But he also feels great weight and responsibility to look out for these humans of Midgard. He doesn’t want to let them, or the other Avengers, down - which is a very human emotion."
As Crystal Dynamics has previously noted, the story of
Marvel's Avengers will be an original one and the characters we see will be much different than the ones we've gotten to know in the MCU. Willingham teased,
"Thor will make an interesting choice that has unintended consequences that will echo throughout the campaign and fully unfold in the game’s story."
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
We'll find out what that choice will be when
Marvel's Avengers assembles on May 15, 2020.
