POLL: Do You Think Marvel Studios Should REBOOT The MCU After AVENGERS: SECRET WARS? POLL: Do You Think Marvel Studios Should REBOOT The MCU After AVENGERS: SECRET WARS?

With rumours swirling that the Multiverse Saga will end with a line-wide reboot of the MCU, we want to know whether you think that sort of massive fresh start would be a good thing for this shared world...

The conclusion of the Infinity Saga saw us bid farewell to a number of beloved characters and actors, but the Multiverse Saga has shifted the franchise's focus to introducing legacy heroes who can keep the mantles, and the MCU, going.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously said Marvel Studios won't recast roles by taking a James Bond-style approach to its characters. That's why we're now seeing the likes of Sam Wilson, Ironheart, and She-Hulk take centre stage (which is no bad thing).

The Multiverse concept means we'll soon see even more alternate versions of our favourite heroes and villains, albeit from different timelines and realities. All of this will culminate with Avengers: Secret Wars, a movie we recently learned will potentially usher in a new era of storytelling by rebooting the MCU.

It's an intriguing prospect and one which could mean we see a new Steve Rogers and Tony Stark on screen.

While the X-Men and Fantastic Four will soon take centre stage, it would be a crime for them to only exist on-screen years after it's possible for the two teams to share it with the original Captain America and Iron Man, for example.

With that in mind, a fresh start makes sense and would allow Marvel Studios to keep many of those legacy characters while also bringing back the bigger-name superheroes they know can sell tickets.

Nothing is confirmed yet, of course, but we'd like you, ComicBookMovie.com's readers, to weigh in and let us know whether you believe a reboot after Avengers: Secret Wars is what's best for the MCU once the Multiverse Saga concludes.

Cast your votes in the poll below and check back here soon for the results!

Should have rebooted after Endgame.
UniqNo - 8/24/2023, 12:31 PM
@Waifuslayer - Na, we needed to miss those characters a bit.

I think it will need a reboot and restructuring for when the mutants really come in.
UniqNo - 8/24/2023, 12:35 PM
@Waifuslayer - Also, I don't think it will need a reboot from the start. It's going to be something like thr multiverse is over and then there's only one new continuity where the characters are all established and are existing so we're not going to neee 20+ new origins stories.
mountainman - 8/24/2023, 1:09 PM
@UniqNo - This is the way right here.

A lot of these characters are known enough in pop culture that the new MCU can start with them already established.

Heck, given the multiverse, it can be both a hard and soft reboot at the same time. Keep any actors they want, recast others, but reset continuity and storylines.
UniqNo - 8/24/2023, 1:25 PM
@mountainman - Yeah, and to be honest i think this is kind of how Gunn and Safran are approaching the DCU.
mountainman - 8/24/2023, 1:34 PM
@UniqNo - I really don’t care if actors stick around post-reboot as long as the continuity is wiped. Judy Dench stayed on as M for Brosnan and Craig and it worked.

A full reboot is cleaner. But the new FF will be debuting at the end of the multiverse saga and there are some other actors/characters that are still fairly new and popular.
UniqNo - 8/24/2023, 2:03 PM
@mountainman - Agreed. Personally though i kind of wish they bring back McAvoy and Fassbender from the Fox timeline as Xavier and Eric (especially Fassbender). Doubt it will happen or that they'd even return for those roles if they had the choice.

I'm just patiently awaiting the mutants in general to finally take centre stage when this saga is over, which is why Deadpool 3 is probably my most anticipated release. Will be a nice buffer for next year until 2027 when things get refreshed.
mountainman - 8/24/2023, 2:14 PM
@UniqNo - Yeah it sounds like Deadpool 3 will feature the old guard X-Men characters. I’m good with this as it would be nice to give them a proper send off in accurate costumes like Wolverine’s and hopefully a better depiction. I would love to see Marsden as a bad ass Cyclops in a comic accurate costume for example.

I’d be ok with bringing McAvoy and Fassbender back if they were willing. I’d also be ok with an all new cast. I just hope the MCU does it right. They’ve lost my trust in recent years. They have such a huge opportunity and responsibility with the mutants. If they do it well, this can be huge. If they mess it up, it will make a large amount of people angry.
Waifuslayer - 8/24/2023, 5:02 PM
@UniqNo - we could have missed them with a good 3-5 year break. And please, enough with the Multiverse crap.
UniqNo - 8/29/2023, 11:01 AM
@Waifuslayer - Louder! Feige can't hear you.
UniqNo - 8/29/2023, 11:06 AM
@mountainman - Marsden's Cyclops been the most underserved character in the whole series, Sheridan was OK, but we never got to see that "Bad ass leader Cyclops. I'd love to see him go at it with Jackman's Wolverine.
mountainman - 8/29/2023, 1:13 PM
@UniqNo - Agreed. I’d argue that most all of that original cast was great. I think they could pull off a bigger happy fanbase moment than even No Way Home by giving that cast their due one last time.

I don’t want Ghost Rider, the FF, Daredevil or any of those characters in it. I want the Fox X-Men done right before an incursion destroys that universe.
HulkisHoly - 8/24/2023, 12:07 PM
I think there should be some sort of reboot if it allows them to have a clearer vision moving forward.
Perhaps the reboot will still have Cap and Iron man dead but it would establish that mutants are a norm in the MCU world. It also give them the ability to kill off a lot of new characters that aren’t working.
JFerguson - 8/24/2023, 12:42 PM
@HulkisHoly - that’s a great idea about killing off some of the excess characters. I nominate she-hulk, Agatha, maybe Namor, america Chavez and half of the thunderbolt characters.

Unfortunately I think Wong will also be a casualty but can be well written if done right
HulkisHoly - 8/24/2023, 1:36 PM
@JFerguson -

Yeah, there are a lot of characters they could kill off at the end of Secret Wars, perhaps to have a clearer path forward but to also have high stakes.
ObserverIO - 8/24/2023, 3:48 PM
@HulkisHoly - A reboot where Cap and Iron Man are still dead? That's great, but what if they rebooted and Cap and Iron Man were also rebooted, alive and young?
dragon316 - 8/24/2023, 4:18 PM
@HulkisHoly - norm😂 Norman Osborn pop in head after say that
soberchimera - 8/24/2023, 12:08 PM
It'd be hilarious if the MCU does a full reboot before Gunn does.
AmySabadini - 8/24/2023, 12:28 PM
@soberchimera - Unfortunately, Gunn is NOT doing a full reboot, so get ready to laugh.
soberchimera - 8/24/2023, 12:43 PM
@AmySabadini - After I cry....
carloswithak - 8/24/2023, 12:49 PM
@AmySabadini - I think what @soberchimera meant is that it would be hilarious if Marvel did reboot their MCU before Gunn get his DC world going. And on that note, this strike is serious business… it has and will continue to push a lot projects waaaaay back. So he may be right… MCU may very well reboot their universe way before Gunn gets the DCU going. Bahahah! Hilarious. 😂
AmySabadini - 8/24/2023, 1:13 PM
@carloswithak - My hope is that WB is sold before Gunn really gets started, so we can have a FULL reboot from someone else. I enjoyed most of the DCEU, but not doing a FULL reboot is madness.
Arthorious - 8/24/2023, 1:30 PM
@carloswithak - possibly, the only thing Gunn has up on them is that he’s working on the script for Legacy (not sure if he’s done with it) while Marvel has nothing to address as for a reboot.
RolandD - 8/24/2023, 7:08 PM
@Arthorious - He’s done the first draft. I believe that’s as far as he got.
WakandaTech - 8/24/2023, 12:10 PM
Yes

I think they should start all over

A Marvel universe with Iron Man, Captain America , T' Challa's Black Panther and X-Men

This Multiverse Phase 4,5,6 looks like it will be a major failure
FireandBlood - 8/24/2023, 12:13 PM
@WakandaTech - In a world where most franchises are failing left and right, Marvel isn’t one of them. The Multiverse Saga might not be hitting the highs of the Infinity Saga, but it’s not anywhere close sniffing failure.
JFerguson - 8/24/2023, 12:43 PM
@WakandaTech - I would limit the statement to the Disney plus shows are a failure. Unabashedly
Ryos - 8/24/2023, 1:08 PM
@JFerguson - for real to say this isn’t failing is crazy to me imo
mountainman - 8/24/2023, 1:36 PM
@PlusUltra - Yes. I don’t know why everyone has to be so hyperbolic about this stuff.

Has post-Endgame MCU struggled to meet the standard of pre-Endgame MCU? Absolutely.

But it certainly isn’t an outright failure.

Even as someone who largely dislikes the current output, I can’t claim the brand has failed.

Now if they don’t course correct, there is a potential for failure in the future. But we aren’t there yet.
JDL - 8/24/2023, 2:24 PM
@JFerguson - And I would bash your opinion. With one exception I have enjoyed the D+ stuff and in that one odd case I am in the minority. Get over it.
dragon316 - 8/24/2023, 4:19 PM
@WakandaTech - slowly went down after she hulk and moon knight
Radders - 8/25/2023, 8:31 AM
@mountainman - I hate to say it but I think it has, Marvel's will crash and burn then we've got Echo and Agatha - each failure impacts the next film and Phase 4 has been more failures that successes sadly
FireandBlood - 8/24/2023, 12:10 PM
A soft reboot that reintroduces the classics, but more importantly, establishes a floating timeline like the Bond franchise, so they can recast without a fuss when actors age out.
AmazingFILMporg - 8/24/2023, 12:14 PM
@PlusUltra -

After secret wars there will be an official timeline
Shivermetimbers - 8/24/2023, 2:51 PM
@PlusUltra - I really wish they would do that. It can be jarring but not a problem if handled right. I don’t understand the reason why they are so insistent on keeping a single actor through a whole arc.
ObserverIO - 8/24/2023, 3:55 PM
@PlusUltra - Bond is easier to catch up with though. You can watch almost any Bond film without ever having seeing any of the others.

But with a Marvel universe continuity is important. People will want to catch up by watching previous instalments. A softboot would require them to catch up by watching everything from 2008.

A hard reboot cleans the deck and makes the product more accessible to future moviegoers.
JFerguson - 8/24/2023, 4:53 PM
@PlusUltra - i'd be down for a floating timeline but only after they get at least 2 x-men trilogies out. We have gone too long with a disrespectful, continuity-destroying Fox-men universe that cast a new actor every movie for mutants they thought audiences don't find important.
FireandBlood - 8/24/2023, 5:05 PM
@ObserverIO - But hard reboots also run the risk of alienating current audiences who have kept up without ever guaranteeing your reboot will resonate with newer audiences. There’s plenty examples of this, whether it be TASM series or even DC’s New 52. A long continuity might be harder to catch up with, but it’s there to do so if you want to. Most people never saw majority of the Phase 1 movies until after Avengers, and most people that have seen the Avengers haven’t seen half the MCU movies. Audiences don’t feel the necessity of watching every instalment like bigger fans do, but they might just reject your product if that familiarity is lost.
ObserverIO - 8/25/2023, 4:49 AM
@PlusUltra - If the reboot happens at the end of Secret Wars, then there will still be continuity. The reboot would be a part of the longer story. It's still MCU for the hardcore MCU fan. And it would still be Marvel making these films. The familiarity would still be there.

There would be as much familiarity as there is now. Right now we have Shang Chi, three Captain Marvels, legacy characters, Eternals, FF soon, etc. The original Avengers are nowhere to be seen. It's connectde via continuity, but then so would any rebooted universe, because you can still watch all of the Infinity Saga and the Multiverse Saga and it would lead into whatever the new universe would be. It would lead into it, story wise, through Secret Wars. Even if it's a hard reboot, that continuity still exists, for those that want to do a massive marathon, thousands and thousands of hours long.

But for new viewers it provides an excellent jumping on point that wouldn't really exist otherwise. And not so much catching up for those that want to seriously invest and care about the universe. Or those casuals who want to catch up in order to understand what's going on.
MotherGooseUPus - 8/24/2023, 12:11 PM
I don't know if a full reboot or soft reboot or none is needed... but what i do know is they need to start thinking and making better decisions again cuz this multiverse saga sucks asshole compared to the Infinity saga. Get your writers, directors, producers all on the same page, have a good solid game plan, and execute it. Thats what i want...not that it matters
