AVENGERS: ENDGAME Tracking For $200-$250 Million Domestic Opening; Could Very Well Top INFINITY WAR

With Avengers: Endgame shattering presale records, Marvel's highly anticipated blockbuster sequel figures to be a surefire hit at the box office. Now, we have some of our first box office estimates, and it looks promising for the House of Mouse.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, early tracking estimates has Avengers: Endgame opening domestically between $200-$250 million over the weekend. While this figure is massive, it is lower than the record-setting $257.6 million that Avengers: Infinity War opened to domestically in April 2018. However, as the site points out, Infinity War's initial tracking had the film opening around $185-$225 million, so this clearly bodes well for Endgame.

Given the pre-sale numbers early on for the superhero epic and the incredible hype leading up to its release, it's not unreasonable to think this film could break Infinity War's record for biggest North American opening of all time. AMC Theatres, Fandango, and Atom Tickets all reported that Endgame's ticket sales in the first 24 hours were the biggest in history, surpassing the previous record holder Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

THR also briefly mentions that Endgame could also break Infinity War's record for biggest opening worldwide. While that movie debuted to a record $640.5 million, some box office analysts estimate Endgame could open in the $750-$800 million range globally, thanks to day and date rollout in China. Avengers: Infinity War didn't debut in China until two weeks after its release in North American theaters, which gives its follow-up the edge for opening weekend comparisons.

That said, Avengers: Endgame does have one thing going against it: a 3 hours, 58-second runtime (Infinity War was 2 hours, 29 minutes). As the longest runtime of any Marvel Studios title, its length means at least one fewer showing a day on any given screen which could impact box office numbers to some degree.

The question at this point isn't whether or not Avengers: Endgame will surpass $1 billion, as that's just about guaranteed right now. The milestone for this film will be $2 billion, which is what Avengers: Infinity War grossed globally. Can Endgame become the fifth film ever to gross over $2 billion at the worldwide box office? We'll soon find out.

Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters on April 26. Tickets are now available.

It will probably do much more than that, this is conservative. And this is the key takeaway here:

Infinity War:
Early tracking domestic: $185-$225 million
Ultimate OW domestic: $257.6 million

Endgame:
Early tracking domestic: $200-$250 million
Ultimate OW domestic: ???

@HeavyMetal4Life - Yea, I think it'll top it. But you also have to wonder if repeat viewings will be as popular. It's easier to justify seeing a movie a second time at 2hr,30m than a 3hr movie.

@HeavyMetal4Life - yeah the $280-300mil predictions from a while ago are sounding more and more accurate

@MattIsForReal - I actually think repeat viewings may be much more popular with Endgame than say Infinity War. This movie is essentially coming off, and being interpreted by the audience as a 3 hour epic, the conclusion to over a decade of storytelling. I think many people will be going back to see it more than once for reasons like these.

@Brave - agreed, I think it has a very good chance of reaching 300 mil, especially after the crazy bonkers madness that we experienced Tuesday morning when the entire ticketing system in this country was crippled by the demand for this film...

@MattIsForReal - I'll definitely see it twice as of right now. But that has to do more with different groups of friends I'll watch it with

Recent Deadline article suggests many analysts believe it will break the record with north of $260M and that a $300M opening is within the realm of possibility.

@MalseMarcel - Is it just me or does Cap's left leg look like it's [frick]ed up in the second gif? When it hit's the ground it quivers a bit and looks quite painful.

@LongMayHeReign - I think it's just that they're walking on uneven terrain. He's also stepping on a piece of debris, making his foot land slightly off, in that shot.

This is crazy, but I'm thinking the 3hr runtime will actually make people see it more because of the epic feel it'll have. Plus the surprises and word of mouth should help it tremendously, as the general public is going into this event blind. They're not ready like we are (hell, I'm not even sure we're ready).
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 4/4/2019, 9:03 AM
@Brave - totally agree, this is an epic cinematic event film. People will be going back to see it more than once. This franchise but more specifically this movie has captivated the world; hell, the ticket sites crashing made NATIONAL news here in the states, lmfao. Everyone who is anyone is aware of this film.

@Brave - Infinity War didn't feel long to me at all. I have to imagine this one will move at a similarly constitent engaging pace.
