Karen Gillan has had an amazing run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far, starring as Nebula in the
Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. But now, with the impending arrival of her father, Thanos, in
Avengers: Infinity War, Gillan’s character figures to play an even bigger and more important role in the upcoming Marvel blockbuster.
Speaking to GameSpot, Gillan talked a bit about her involvement in Infinity War, sharing what she believes has been the most rewarding part about being involved in the MCU.
“Probably playing this particular character [Nebula]. I love my character so much. I am so invested in her whole backstory, her whole relationship with her sister, the relationship with her father [Thanos] that we're definitely going to explore in the movies that are coming out soon, and so I think it all boils down to that. I just feel so lucky that I got this character who, you know, was initially a villain, and then we started to learn more about her, and then our view as the audience, I think, changed toward her. And she's just such a well written character that I feel like lots of people are getting invested in her along with me. And so I'm just so excited for everyone to see where she ends up.”
Nebula was first introduced in the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 as the adopted daughter of Thanos. Introduced initially as a “villain,” she sets out to killer her adopted sister Gamora; however, Nebula’s complicated backstory - including her forced daily competition with Gamora - has created a very compelling character for the MCU.
Although she’s still out to kill Gamora in GotG Vol. 2, the two wind up working together and in the end Nebula sets out to kill Thanos alone. Since then, we’ve only seen a brief glimpse of Nebula in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer; however, Gillan has previously teased that the character is going to “have her moment” in the upcoming film.
We’ll learn more when the highly anticipated film hits theaters April 27.
