Mark Ruffalo Signs on as Bruce Banner for The Avengers

Deadline.com has just reported that Ruffalo has officially reached an agreement with Marvel to replace Edward Norton.

Deadline.com's Nikki Finke has just released this report that seems to be the culmination of the Ruffalo/Norton/Avengers rumors:

"I've just learned the ink is drying on the deal reached by Brillstein Entertainment Partners with Marvel. (There's no official confirmation yet from Marvel whose reps aren't available for their usual "No comment".) So it looks like Marvel movie mastermind Kevin Feige may pull this off and bring Ruffalo along with other of The Avengers superheroes and director Joss Whedon to tomorrow night's panel at Comic-Con."

Deadline was the original source linking Ruffalo to the role of Bruce Banner, and until recently the buzz has been that his tentative contract with Marvel was still being looked over by both parties; up until today. Only time will tell if Ruffalo will be present at Marvel's THOR and Captain America movie panel taking place in Hall H at Comic Con.

Oh, sweet lord no.
edit: I actually don't care too much any more. Not that we need Hulk in Avengers, though I think Ed Norton would be a very nice touch to the cast, being CGI or not.

Ruffalo is a great actor. I just hope that he embraces the character. He said before he never saw himself playing a CBM role because he doesn't care for comics, hopefully the convinced him otherwise and will bring his A game.

Oh and LEEE777 He said that Ant-Man really isn't in the movie. I am staying optimistic and hoping that Hank Pym will be in it and that they will wait for his own movie before he becomes Ant-Man. And he never said Wasp wasn't in it so lets just keep hoping.

TANK @ Why am I happy? RUFFALO is small potatoes, when they pulled total SH1T like they have with HANK & JAN!!!

RUFFALO is the final nail in the cbm coffin! Good luck to the guy but 3 different BANNERS in under 10 years, hell no!

WHEDON is now the worst thing that ever happened to this movie!

TEA @ I know lol, what a bunch of ********! : P

FOUNDING MEMBERS or they can [frick] off!

Bartsbucs @ You've got a point, but,,, I think its wishful thinking, damn ANT-MAN should other have little HANK anyways, then his armor gets stolen for the new ANT-MAN!

Man, some you guys just bitch non-stop.

Sure, sucks we may not see pym/wasp. But if we did, there's a very real danger of having too many characters, and no freaking story to speak of.
Think about it, how easily could this become just a bunch of cameos? You want to have a core of characters to focus on. We have Fury, Hulk/Banner, the Cap, Iron Man, Thor. Probably Widow, maybe War Machine, maybe Hawkeye. Could have other heroes, and you need to introduce villains as well. How the hell ca you add more and have any semblance of a story? Seriously, if Marvel did whatever they could to please every fanboy, the movie would SUCK HARD. Let them do their thing and stop freaking out, when you damn well every single one of you will be there opening night.

WireySpindell @ We don't need to have [frick]ing BLACK WIDOW in it, and HAWKEYE only needs a very small cameo, use him more in AVENGERS 2!!! Wont even go there with FURY! Also if WAR MACHINES in the first one before HANK & JAN, I wont be at opening night or any night for that matter, ever!

(Look whats happened to the X-MOVIE-VERSE now, coz HOLLYWOOD [frick]ed up the founding members!)

TEA @ Total pointless, your right! : P

First of all, @LEEE--, exactly like Bartsbucs said, Whedon's wording about Ant-Man was very specific... It could mean that Hank appears in the film, but either doesn't have a code-name, or goes by one of the other thousand code-names he's used throughout the comics, such as Yellowjacket, Giant Man, etc...

Secondly, notice that the quote from Deadline about Ruffalo's deal doesn't actually say who he's signed on to portray in the Avengers film... We're just assuming it's Banner because of previous rumor...

And yes, I'm aware that this is all wishful thinking, but hey... we'll know soon enough.

And I hope your right about HANK but too many times has HOLLYWOOD built us up, just to knock it all down!

@LEEE--

Nowhere in that quote does it name a specific character... Now, this is probably as wild as my last Marvel casting conspiracy theory (You know... the one about Chris Hemsworth actually being cast as Captain America, and an unknown being cast as Thor...) but a guy can dream, can't he?

See, in my mind, it plays out like this--

Joss walks out in front of the audience, then makes some variation of the following announcement...

"As I'm sure you all have heard, Mark Ruffalo has just signed a deal to appear in the upcoming Avengers film, as well as a few more as of yet undetermined Marvel films. Well, I'd like to introduce you all to Doctor Bruce Banner."

at which point, Ed Norton steps out on stage and the crowd goes wild

Whedon continues his speach, finishing it out with this statement.

"I'd also like to introduce you to Doctor Hank Pym"

Cue Mark Ruffalo stepping out onstage next to Norton.

Now, is that likely? No. Is it what I hope happens? Most definitely.

tea: I don't think it has anything to do with changing the actor. I think most complaints are because people feel Ruffalo is horribly miscast for banner... :/

JoshWilding - 7/24/2010, 2:58 AM
Excellent. There are a few other actors that I think would have been a little better suited to this role (fan favourite Jeremy Davies comes to mind) but Marvel have made a great casting choice here IMO. Just check him out in Shutter Island or Zodiac - he's a great actor.

As for the whole Hank and Jan thing, I have to agree that it'll be a huge let down if they're not included in the movie! As I've said before, they could literally be introduced in a few short minutes if they followed The Ultimates and their origins could easily be padded out in the Ant-Man movie!

It's amazing how most here down movies before they're even made and before they've been seen. Are you guys psychic ? Go join Miss Cleo. Try waiting for the movie to come out before you criticize it. We all want the perfect CBM, but it will never happen. It's too expensive and difficult to bring to life in full detail what we read in the pages of comics and what we see in our minds. So a few things get changed here and there. The bottom line is whether or not we're entertained by what we see.

Hank and Jan are the quintessential duo in the Avengers. They are the main ingredients to make it work for me. Josh better not make us mad cus I will seriously skull[frick] MARVEL for letting such an atrocity to ever ensue.

Ruffalo is not even close to my choice for Banner but atleast he is not one of them horrible actors cough Sam cough Worthlesston cough Channing cough Twatum.

I myself could care less if Norton is there
anymore! They replaced him and that's that!

I actually think this is good casting! Ruffalo
is a fine actor, he's a short slight guy, he's got
dark hair, that sounds like Banner to me!
He was great in the ensemble cast of ZODIAK.

But Hank & Jan MUST be there! There is no first
AVENGERS WITHOUT THEM! They were starters of the
first AVENGERS there is no getting around that!

@ leee777 give the avengers movie a chance mate.
its gonna turn out better than x-men first class(even though i must admit i'm looking forward to seeing alice eve dressed up as emma frost.)
& what about the spider-man reboot that gonna be shit if its set in the ultimate universe.
their always the fantastic four reborn to look forward to.
i don't think its the end of the world just yet.

I still dont buy it!! Norton is Banner and i cant believe that they are so stupid and change the actor! It cost them money! I dont believe it before its really official!
Ruffalo is a great actor and i like his movies, but to me he is not Banner!

We should give Ruffalo a chance imo. I honestly thought Edward Norton was a bad choice for Bruce Banner when i first heard about The Incredible Hulk (as far as the looks go) but his acting got it right. So i think we're gonna see a decent acted out Bruce :)
