Anyone who has seen The Avengers will know that not every member of the team makes it to the final credits, and even if you haven't, I think the cat is pretty much out of the bag by now that someone is killed off in the movie. If you still don't know who and still don't want to know, get the Hell outta here!..

SPOILERS AHEAD

Yes, we said goodbye to good ol Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) in The Avengers, who gave his life bravely trying to keep Loki from escaping the Hellicarrier. From his first appearance in Iron Man to his beefed up role in Thor, to his final moments in The Avengers, MTV have posted a tribute video to the fallen agent of S.H.I.E.L.D..

I'm hoping, in true comic book fashion, it's revealed in a later film that he's still alive and Fury just used his 'death' as motivation for the Avengers.

Neonhero, I absolutely hope that DOESN'T happen. It would be ridiculous. Characters die, that's what makes good drama. Was Coulson a great character? Sure, but it's not like they killed off Iron Man or something! They killed off a supporting character same as most franchises generally do. I'm not saying I would be against him coming back, but if it happens they better damn well make it believable, AND have a point.

He served his purpose. He brought the team together. Time to move on to other characters.

There's no way he's dead. Not a cat's chance in hell! He'll be back, probably in another one-shot that shows how he survives or at the latest IM3.
Hope they don't make him Vision, he's a good character as he is.

if they do bring coulson back, the best way to do it is to have shield construct the Vision, a super android based on coulson's appearence(as a tribute to their lost agent),and maybe even they could implant coulson's memories on him! His constructor would be of course Hank Pym(already Ant-Man), and he would work for Shield and then join the Avengers when the team is needed again! His capacity to control his density would surely be a kick-ass on-screen!!! i just wonder if coulson's looks and style would make this work...

This is all fine and dandy but he didn't die.Anyone see a dead body? Just a fading guy reminding Fury they need to be inspired. Then presto-chango..dead cousin...and "You pissed off another guy, Phil"...Fury is NOT a truthful guy...we already know he lied about the cards...Coulsons not dead...AND, even if he is...given the recent news of him talking with former director of Thor2, something tells me Hel may be making an appearance.. :)

Moth3r, actually yes we did see a dead guy. Remember when he didn't finish his sentence, stopped breathing and lay there with his eyes open like he had just died? Yeah, that was because he died.

Am I the only one that found his death completely unnecessary? Okay I understand the reasoning is they needed a push to be great, but did they really? Each character had the most you could possibly have at stake to come together and defeat their common enemy. The world was ending and they still needed someone to rally around? It seemed like a pointless use of pathos.

The thing is, if Coulson didn't die I still say they come together and defeat Loki. His death wasn't paramount to the team rising up, I think the team really came together when Hawkeye invaded the Hellacarrier. Iron Man and Cap worked together wonderfully to solve a problem, and Thor helped out Black Widdow. I don't know, I loved the movie, but I don't understand how his death was necessary to the narrative.

He's dead. Cool character but dead.

And it's cool because people was really moved by it (my wife cried yesterday when watching it).

@iLoveMarvelAndDC - just change your name and avatar, dude... you're bashing and making fun of marvel all around. No need to pretend you enjoy it.

his death was jaw dropping, but i DO think it was the needed push, hope he comes back somehow, even if it's flashbacks,or pre-quel stories,he was awesome,he was the one character that really let all of us know that the avengers movie was going to happen.

God I hope they don't bring him back to life because that's the very thing I hate about superhero comics and why I stopped buying them. They treat their readers like pre-school children when it comes to dealing with death.

joss whedon confirmed that coulson survived. i mean, the bloodied trading cards are found in his locker, not in his jacket right? and i think fury used his presumed "death" because, "they needed a push"

I was hoping it wasn't going to happen and it sure sucked when it did, but they needed to make it real to motivate the Avengers (and us) to want to kick the enemy's ass. When Hulk smashed Loki I was like "that was for Coulson you f-cker! ;)

Maybe they can do some pre-quel shorts or flashbacks, but bringing him back alive into future stories would be silly.

MarkCassidy - 5/7/2012, 10:19 AM
ha, some of you guys sure find it hard to let go of dead characters huh? Never watch Game Of Thrones then!
Fogs
Fogs - 5/7/2012, 10:19 AM
@Ceejay - Agreed. Same reasons here. Now I just read special series and graphic novels because noone gets old, stays dead or married.

They should keep the continuity with heroes dying, getting old, their sons and daughters assuming their identities, etc.

And then when you wanted to have a Steve Rogers or Bruce Wayne story again, just do it as a flashback.

It would be awesome. Like serious fantasy books do. people die all the time. Let'em stay dead and move on.

Doesn't every comic book fan here realize that this is the Marvel Universe and Marvel practically invented the idea that in comics, no one stays dead. That's just the way it is. And screw this Vision talk, I just can't see that making one drop of sense but there are so many other ways for him to come back. -Befouled be cloned (or he could have been a clone), they could have used nano technology to revive him (Iron Man 3's plot line should revolve around that anyway), S.H.E.I.L.D. could have some other lost piece of alien or magic tech that could have saved him or brought him back. Plus, sooner or later we will still be introduced to Doctor Strange and then there's always the Skrull factor (introduced at the end of the movie) to consider. And that's just off the top of my head. So DEAD in the Marvel Universe? Not bloody likely!
Fogs
Fogs - 5/7/2012, 10:20 AM
@mrwasabe2 - Wrong. The cards were taken from his locker to give'em an extra incentive boost. That's all the scene shows. People are looking too much into it.
SpiderFan35
SpiderFan35 - 5/7/2012, 10:21 AM
@mrwasabe: Whedon was just hiding the truth so it would not be spoiled. Fury lied to make his death seem more hurtful, and it showed how desperate he was to get the Avengers going.

Maybe they will do some flashbacks in IM3 with Coulson.

RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/7/2012, 10:24 AM
@Nomis

I know but that is my question, did they really need to make it more personal? I thought Loki made it pretty personal for each of them on the Hellacarrier, and from my view I really thought they came together after the attack. If Coulson didn't die I would have believed the Tony Stark and Captain America would have said, you know what, we can do this. We need to do this. The world is at stake.

Should he stay dead? Yes, I say yes he should.

But.... many's the time a character is supposedly dead... these things happen in the spy business... Coulson could be dead as far as the Avengers line-up is concerned, but still an Agent of SHIELD in other Marvel movies. Remember, he said it in Iron Man... that wasn't his first rodeo. Only we the audience, and Nick Fury, will know ... this could be fun.
Mr2099
Mr2099 - 5/7/2012, 10:30 AM
My friend and I both believe that we saw Coulson at the end when Fury was telling Hill that the Avengers will come back when they are needed. When Maria walked away, she brush passed a man in a suit and tie. Now think about it, on the entire Helicarrier, was there ANYONE other then Fury and Coulson who didn't wear a SHIELD jumpsuit? So I think he might be alive.
Though I wouldn't discount the Vision theory either.
