Why Tony Stark Will Be Iron Man in the Avengers Movie

Why Tony Stark Will Be Iron Man in the Avengers Movie

A look at why I think Tony Stark won't listen to Fury and will suit up as Iron Man in the Avengers movie.

I heard a review/commentary of the Iron Man movie recently which raised a point which, in all reality, is entirely invalid. It went like this:

“Sam Jackson as Nick Fury said they didn’t want Tony Stark as Iron Man in the Avengers program, therefore Robert Downey won’t be Iron Man in the Avengers movie.”

The logic is sound up until you realize that it’s a movie and the author of one movie isn’t the author of another. I’m going to look at just a few reasons why I think Downey will be in the Iron Man armour in the upcoming Avengers film.

#1 – Who else would it be in the armour?
Marvel is putting a lot of time and effort into these Avengers related movies. They’re building it up slowly so that everything is in place in their new live-action film universe. Fury has spoken to Stark who has spoken to Banner who’ll probably punch Thor in the face or something. The Captain America movie comes out before the Avengers movie, and Joss Whedon has his hands in both of those mvies, which means it’s possible that there will be a direct linkage between the two movies (check out my full theory here). Marvel is trying to stay pretty close to the comics.

So why would Iron Man all of a sudden not be Tony Stark?

Additionally, who else can get in the armour? Rhodey? You’ve only got so much budget for big name actors, and I’ll guarantee you that Don Cheadle isn’t going to be suiting up for the Avengers as they go off to rescue Captain America from his deep freeze.

#2 – It’s a great story device to have Tony “save the day”.
We’ve already seen Fury tell Stark that they don’t want him for the Avengers program. So how ever can they step back on what they said?

Oh heavens, how many ways can’t they?

Here’s just one. Something happens to the Avengers team – minus Stark – and maybe even with some newbie in an Iron suit. Stark is monitoring, of course, maybe even in his advisor roll from the helicarrier. Then something goes wrong, Stark disobeys Fury and jumps in to save the day!

It’s also a way to carry the story for awhile, because I think it might be hard for Whedon to just “Avengers Assemble” it at the very beginning of the movie.

#3 – Marvel won’t waste the Iron Man movies.
I said it above, and I’ll say it again: Marvel is putting a lot of time and effort into these Avengers movies. Why would they all of a sudden just drop Iron Man off the side of the Earth? They’ve spent a lot of time showcasing Tony Stark as a rich playboy who cares and is a hero, and then they’re going to just not use him?

Got more reasons why Tony Stark will suit up as Iron Man for the Avengers movie? Use the comments below to share them with all of us. Or, conversely, tell me I’m wrong! You like flaming me, so get to it!

i absolutetly agree. Marvel wasnt that stupid to just not put RDJ as Tony and not put Tony as Iron Man. RDJ's return as the Armored Avenger will be seen next on the Avengers movie, so fans would clamour for him after this year's Iron Man 2. and RDJ owned Tony Stark... no one else comes close to that. Looking forward for the Avengers movie.

Wait what? Fury didn't tell Stark to stop being Iron Man. They just didn't want Iron Man part of the Avengers team just yet, and in the meantime, Iron Man would just act as an consultant until Stark stops being reckless and self-centered.

In The Avengers, I think Iron Man will be more independent at first, like Batman in JLA, while Captain America will be appointed as the official.. captain of The Avengers.

i think that line was confusing, but here is my interpretation of what sam jackson was saying. he says "yes to iron man", but "not to stark". he then clarifies that this means that Stark will be a "consultant". What this is explaining is that Tony is not a full member of SHIELD that is employed by them. He's an outside force that works on the team. Hes an Avenger, just not part of SHIELD. He not on the payroll, hes just their "consulting".

Fury's statement is how you have Stark be an Avenger but not a SHIELD agent.

Robert Downey Jr WILL be Tony Stark and WILL be Iron Man in The Avengers. The End.

Also telavizion hit the nail on the head: They want Iron Man the hero, not Tony Stark the ass.

Its just a good 'hook'. They can't do Avengers without Tony Stark/Iron Man. That would be like Dr. Who without the Daleks or Star Trek with no Klingons.

Lol, yeah dude, they want the Iron Man persona, the hero, not Tony Stark the egomaniac. Robert will be in the movie, don't worry.

My prediction is the Avengers will be all set up... then Iron Man comes in and is all like "I'm not part of the team (yet) but I'll listen to what y'all have to say." BOOM! Then he'll be on the team.

umm... who ever said Stark would be in the movie? No one.

RDJ may retire but that would only mean recasting not removing the character.

Another little something to note is about the end of The Incredible Hulk, which takes place after Iron Man 2. Stark talks to Ross about the Avengers... so obviously he's on board in some way.

Must be a Slow Day , Cuz RDJ Will Be in This Movie ( as IronMan ) Do You Really Think Marvel Would Waste Time and Money on Anyone Else ?
It's Called a Storyline , Subplot ETC...ETC...

Well I would guess so, since he wanted to recuit Hulk in the end of the movie. Which we now know took place during and after Iron man 2

I have a question for ya'll!!!

What was Fury talking about when he said he has problems in the "south east"???

I had the impression that Fury was implying that he wanted to separate Tony and Iron Man from each other by making everyone think it was no longer Stark in the suit. Resecreting his identity.

I really don't understand the point of this argument/article.

I believe Thor will wield the hammer, Mjolnir and here's why-we saw it at the end of IM 2. Hmmm, now that is an article.

Of course he is, they are not going to flush away a character they have just spent 4 years and 2 films marketing. They are not that dumb. Stark will be Iron Man, they have used this as a plot device for Tony to get his act together more throughout the movie and if anything appear in MORE movies as stark, recruiting other people to the avengers to redeem himself.
This is called a plot device people.

Marvel are not-that-stupid.

i would say that Fury meant that he didn't want Stark on the team because he has not proven himself responsible or a team player.
i think that Fury will look to Rhodey to fill Stark's shoes until Fury realizes that Rhodey is too straight laced and answers ONLY to America.
Fury needs someone that is flexible. just read Secret War and you'll know what i'm talking about.

and then there is the fact that Tony might just ignore Fury. he ignored Coulson in Iron Man by giving away his alter ego to the press. and he ignored Fury and Coulson by sneaking out of house arrest in Iron Man 2.
so it's entire;y plausible that Tony will be the unwated asset in Avengers until Fury realizes that Tony has it where it counts. oh, and Tony will offer to publicly back and fund the "super hero boy band."

btw, don't forget to check out Part V in my Spider-man story over in Fan Fic!

Do we really need this? The only reason they said that was to create a bit of tension and in thier minds to make fans go "Ohh no what does that mean?!" but anyone with a braincell knows that RDJ will be Avengers as Iron Man, of course he will be...it's common knowledge.

And if by some combination of Scarlet Witch and Domino's powers that doesn't happen...we shall send ComicBookMovie to eat their world.
RDJ WILL be Iron Man and Iron Man WILL be an Avenger! 'Nuff Said!

For my picks on the rest of the cast...

You don't think that he could have meant the "technology" of Iron Man do you? War Machine has been an Avenger and currently is a Secret Avenger. Not a huge leap, this also leaves it open to RDJ coming in and saving the day last minute as Iron Man...

Yet another pointless article from the guy who never comments! :P

Of course, he'll be Iron Man in The Avengers! What, you thought it would be just Captain America and Thor while Tony sits back sipping on a martini? And as for, "with some newbie in an Iron suit" - do you really think that will happen!? I honestly dont get this...it's obvious that Iron Man will be in the movie and yet all you do is point out the blatantly obvious ways he'll be included!

tony stark will be iron man in the avengers because you can't really have an avengers movie without the most key avengers in it,the likes of captain america, iron man & thor HAVE GOT TO BE IN IT.

IT WILL SUCK IF HE ISN'T IRONMAN,JUST PLAYS TONY STARK.
