YOUNG AVENGERS TV Series Rumored For Disney+ Streaming Service

It's hard to ignore the fact that Marvel appears to be assembling a roster of Young Avengers across the big and small screens, and now a new report claims that there are plans for the team on Disney+...

In Avengers: Endgame, the five-year time-jump saw Cassie Lang reach an age where it's finally feasible that she could suit up as Stature, and we know that Marvel Studios has plans for characters like Kate Bishop/Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel (there are also rumours that Wiccan and Speed will make their respective debuts in WandaVision).

Now, Full Circle Cinema has shared a rumour from scooper Daniel Richtman in which it's claimed that there are plans for a Young Avengers project on Disney+.

With recent reports teasing plans for Ms. America Chavez, it definitely feels like this young team of heroes is being assembled, and it would be an interesting move on Marvel Studios' part to debut them on this streaming service rather than theaters. There may be other plans for Earth's Mightiest Heroes on the big screen, however, and we probably shouldn't get too excited about this one just yet.

After all, there are countless rumours doing the rounds about what's coming to Disney+ and, as of right now, it feels more like a guessing game than anything else!  Still, a series along the lines of The Defenders which brings all of these young superheroes together would be a lot of fun, and it would also go a long way in expanding The Avengers franchise.

As always, we'll keep you guys updated, but let us know your thoughts on this latest rumour below.

Hit the "View List" button for a look at the "forgotten"
MCU characters we want to see return on Disney+!

10. The Leader

Leader

In all honesty, Tim Blake Nelson probably wasn't the best choice to play the big screen version of The Leader and the way Marvel Studios went about introducing him was very weird.

Despite that, they certainly managed to set the stage for him to become the bad guy we all know and love hate from the comics, and while it would be fun seeing him clash with The Hulk, there are other characters he could easily cause problems for. Unlike many of the other characters here, though, it's hard to say which of the shows we know about he would be a good fit for.

Either way, it would be awesome seeing his story finally continue and until Marvel changes its mind about a Hulk movie, I think Disney+ would be the best possible fit for the character.

9. Ultron

Ultron

Maybe it's unfair to call Ultron "forgotten" when he was the lead villain in an Avengers movie but does it not seem like something of a waste to have introduced the villainous android there and then immediately get rid of him before the credits could roll?

His death has always been somewhat ambiguous and I'm sure he could have found a way to survive, even if it was inside The Vision (unbeknownst to the hero, he may have found a way to leave his memories dormant inside his "son"). Honestly, it's hard to think of a better bad guy for WandaVision, especially as he has such a personal connection to both leads.

Marvel could also use this surprise return to set something up for the future...bear in mind that Ultron ultimately plays a key role in the epic cosmic storyline Annihilation...

8. Jane Foster

Jane

A past version of Jane Foster appeared in Avengers: Endgame but Marvel Studios actually used some old footage from Thor: The Dark World to make that happen and Natalie Portman supplied only a single line of dialogue.

Assuming Disney could convince her to return, it would be a lot of fun to delve into what she's been up to since the last time we saw her and with the God of Thunder off in space with the Guardians of the Galaxy, there's room for a new Thor back on Earth and I'm sure another Mjolnir from the Multiverse could find its way into her hands.

A female-led Thor series on Disney+ would be a huge draw and, just like the comics, has huge potential.

7. Justin Hammer

Justin

Marvel first Phase of movies was criticised for its forgettable villains so it says a lot about Sam Rockwell that fans are still asking Kevin Feige to bring back Justin Hammer. He's popped up in a "One-Shot" movie as something of a punchline but can you imagine the damage he could do now that Iron Man is gone?

He'd make a great ally to someone like Zemo and it definitely feels like there's more story to be told with him.

If he wasn't a victim of the Snap, his prison term could easily have been and gone and, who knows, perhaps Stark Industries is now ripe for the taking with Tony Stark gone and Pepper Potts busy raising their daughter. Falcon & Winter Soldier seems like a good fit for him, but he might make an interesting foe for Scarlet Witch and The Vision's WandaVision series too.

6. Mockingbird

Mockingbird

This is a tricky one, especially as Marvel Television and Marvel Studios are two separate entities. Yes, those TV shows are supposed to take place in the MCU but any links are tenuous are best and aside from James D'Arcy's Jarvis making the leap from Agent Carter to Avengers: Endgame, we still haven't seen any proper crossovers.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is still entertaining but the show is on its last legs, so why can't Disney+ make good use of Adrianne Palicki's Bobbi Morse? It goes without saying she would be a good fit for the Hawkeye series that's in the works and Marvel could easily invent some history between them.

It's been widely reported that Clint Barton's show will revolve around him training his replacement (Kate Bishop) but Mockingbird could very easily factor into that and with Black Widow dead and gone, it would be fun seeing Hawkeye having another female hero (albeit a very different one) to bounce off during the course of this adventure.

5. The Howling Commandos

Howling

We first met The Howling Commandos in Captain America: The First Avenger and while they made a brief appearance in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., that was it for a group of characters who have had some genuinely really fun adventures in the comic books.

Putting the spotlight on this group in their own series would definitely be a challenge, especially as there isn't really an A-Lister here outside of Captain America and Bucky. While I'm sure the latter could make an appearance, I highly doubt Chris Evans would reprise his role as Steve Rogers, so perhaps Marvel Studios could just utilise the voices of these actors for an episode of What If?!

Alternatively, flashbacks to one of their past adventures could have ramifications for whatever happens in Falcon & Winter Soldier. Either way, seeing this lot in action again could be really cool.

4. The Nova Corps

Nova1

There was a throwaway mention about Xandar being attacked in Avengers: Infinity War but we've otherwise been kept in the dark about the fate of the Nova Corps since Thanos took aim at the Power Stone. Well, revisiting this faction on Disney+ seems like a no-brainer, especially as it could lead to the introduction of a certain cosmic superhero.

If it was set during that five-year time-jump, we could catch up with characters like Nova-Prime and Rhomann Dey as they attempt to rebuild after the Mad Titan's attack, something that would lead to a certain Richard Rider being granted some amazing abilities.

Kevin Feige has said this is a character who has been discussed at Marvel Studios and I see no reason why his introduction couldn't come on Disney+ as opposed to the big screen, especially as James Gunn doesn't seem to have any interest at all in using Nova.

3. Ant-Man And The Wasp

Ant-Wasp

Wait, I know what you're thinking - why are Ant-Man and The Wasp here? Well, I'm not referring to Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne; instead, this is a reference to Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne.

Now, an argument could be made that they haven't been "forgotten" as such and I'm sure both characters will play a key role in the third instalment of this big screen franchise, especially after Janet returned from the Quantum Realm with some pretty mysterious powers. However, what Marvel Studios has forgotten is their past.

Sure, we've had some flashbacks but these two were founding Avengers in the comics! They deserve the spotlight and I'm sure a 1970s set adventure with them showing how they met and then them embarking on missions which expand the history of the MCU would be embraced by fans.

2. Sif

Sif

Where has Jaimie Alexander's Sif been since Thor: The Dark World way back in 2013?

While I'm sure her television commitments have factored into the character's absence, it's hard to believe Kevin Feige isn't aware of the interest fans have in seeing her return and it's bizarre that we haven't even had some sort of throwaway mention of her whereabouts following Asgard's destruction and eventual relocation on Earth.

If she has been on some sort of secret mission for Asgard, how great would it be for her to return and learn about everything that's happened, not to mention Thor's absence now he's a Guardian? She's made a great supporting character in the aforementioned Thor series starring Natalie Portman but could easily hold her own in a solo show.

1. The Abomination

Abomination-2

The Incredible Hulk may be the black sheep of the Marvel Studios family but one thing it definitely got right was the decision to introduce Tim Roth as the villainous Abomination.

Equally as strong as the Jade Giant but ten times more evil, the fact we're not going to get another Hulk movie probably puts an end to any hopes of a rematch. That doesn't mean the character should be sidelined indefinitely, though, and it's about time he breaks out of custody and starts causing havoc (surely HYDRA could have let him slip away during their infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D.?).

I'm not sure where he could pop up but wouldn't it be awesome if he serves as a henchman of sorts to Zemo as the Captain America: Civil War villain assembles his Masters of Evil?

you need to know about Falcon & Winter Soldier!

It's Set After The Events Of Avengers: Endgame

Falcon-1

There's been some speculation that Marvel's Disney+ TV shows would all be set before the events of Infinity War, but despite Falcon & The Winter Soldier's supporting cast (more on them later), it's said that this show will pick up with the characters following their appearance in Avengers: Endgame.

This obviously makes a lot of sense, especially when Sam and Bucky were left in such an interesting place after the revelation that Steve Rogers chose to stay in the past with Peggy Carter.

The Falcon Wields The Shield

Falcon-2

As you might expect, Sam accepting the shield from Captain America will indeed figure into the series and while we don't know whether he'll actually don a new suit and take on this persona, you'd best believe Marvel will be laying the groundwork.

Showing Sam struggling to deal with filling the void Steve left over the course of this TV show makes much more sense than him just being Captain America the next time we see him, but, if nothing else, here's hoping we get to see what his new costume looks like!

It Will Run For Six Episodes

Bucky-1

Each of Marvel's Netflix TV shows have now been cancelled and while there are a number of reasons for that, one of the biggest is the fact that they were simply too long. In theory, thirteen episodes was a good idea but there was a noticeable decline in the latter half of each season because the story was too stretched out, and a second, not particularly good subplot was often introduced.

Well, Marvel Studios isn't making that same mistake with Falcon & Winter Soldier because it's been confirmed that it will run for a total of six episodes.

We don't know whether they'll be 40 minutes each or somewhere in the 50 - 60 minute range, but that sounds like a perfect amount of time to delve into this adventure while also giving the characters a little more time to breathe on Disney's new streaming service.

An Unexpected Choice Of Director

Kari

As of right now, every Marvel movie coming out in 2020 will be helmed by a woman, and that's also going to be the case for this series on Disney+. In order to maintain a level of consistency, Kari Skogland has been chosen to take the helm of all six episodes and Malcolm Spellman (Empire) was hired as a writer  (presumably of the entire series) earlier this year.

Skogland's credits make for interesting reading, as she's worked on everything from Boardwalk Empire to The Walking Dead, The Americans, House of Cards, and The Punisher. She's directed episodes of The Handmaid's Tale and worked with Russell Crowe and Naomi Watts on Showtime's The Loudest Voice, which airs this June. So, yeah, Marvel Studios has chosen wisely!

Some Familiar Faces Return

Zemo

Perhaps the most exciting announcement regarding this series is the fact that Daniel Bruhl will be reprising his role as Zemo from Captain America: Civil War. He'll be joined by Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter, and that pretty much confirms that this series will be set firmly in Cap's corner of the MCU.

Zemo was behind bars the last time we saw him and you have to believe that Sharon will have some thoughts on everything that's happened with Steve Rogers, especially as they were beginning to embark on something of a romantic relationship. Plus, will she now think of him as her uncle after Avengers: Endgame's writers claimed that Cap is the father of Peggy's children in this timeline?

Either way, this should be great fun, and Zemo definitely deserves another chance to shine.

It Will Debut August 2020

Falcon-Bucky

Marvel Studios still hasn't revealed its official slate of movies for 2020 but a number of reliable outlets have reported that Falcon & The Winter Soldier will be with us in August. That more than makes up for the fact that we're only getting two big screen MCU adventures next year (believed to be Black Widow and The Eternals), and there's a good chance that at least one more show is going to end up hitting Disney+.

What hasn't been revealed - and this is the case for pretty much all the shows hitting the streaming service - is whether all six episodes will be released in one go or whether we'll have to tune in weekly for a new instalment. Either option sounds good!

So, that's what we know so far, but we also have some pretty big questions about what's to come...

Is Chris Evans Set To Appear?

Steve-R

This is a very big question, and one the show will have to address. Is old man Steve Rogers now in a retirement home or will he have died off screen at some point? Personally, I find it hard to imagine that Chris Evans will be donning the old man makeup for Falcon & The Winter Soldier, but we can probably expect to get some answers about what his role - or lack thereof - will be in the MCU from here.

Where Will The Story Take Us?

Zemo1

While Deadline claims that the show will deal with the fallout of Avengers: Endgame and The Falcon's transformation into Captain America, Marvel Studios is otherwise keeping things under wraps.

That's no great surprise, but common sense says that plot threads from Captain America: Civil War will be addressed, while we'll probably learn more about how the C.I.A. views superheroes after the Snap and possibly end of the Sokovia Accords. Seeing as Kevin Feige has said these shows tie into the movies, don't be surprised if we also learn what comes next for the "New" (?) Avengers.

Sue me for saying this, but I think Marvel is getting out of hand with all these TV shows. Like jeez, RELAX.

@Nightwing1015 - If it pays of flong term, I'm all for long story telling over TV leaidng up to whatever movie for a character or team on the big screen. Flesh things out on TV, then go balls to the wall on the big screen.

If people aren't prepared to invest on the streaming service or downloaiding the episodes, that's on them.

@Nightwing1015 - Well they bought Fox for a reason. It wasn't to get back F4/X-men like what many are preaching. Bob Iger spent over 100 billion dollars buying Fox, Hulu, and an upcoming streaming tech company called Green Planet (or something like that) just for streaming. Iger said Disney would have never purchased Fox if they weren’t planning to join the streaming wars because they need a lot of exclusive content in order to compete with Netflix. Disney has no choice but to go all in. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dark, West Coast, or Young Avengers were all tv shows instead of movies because their investment in streaming was huge.

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - Right! People up here are acting like just because these shows will be on they HAVE to watch them. Marvel/Disney won't be forcing people to watch any of these shows, it's all subscription based and just like Netflix, if you don't want to watch...don't watch it. People will literally complain about anything, even when they get too much of a good thing.

@Nightwing1015 - Are you sure about that?

Movies:

1 Doctor Strange 2
2 Thor 4
3 Shang-Chi
4 Eternals
5 Black Widow
6 Black Panther 2
7 Blade
8 Guardians 3
9 Captain Marvel 2

TV shows:

1 What If
2 Loki
3 WandaVision
4 Hawkeye
5 Falcon & Winter Soldier
6 Moon Knight
7 She Hulk
8 Moon Knight
9 Ms Marvel

Unless I missed anything, that's a 50/50 split and there could definitely be more movies planned considering Ant-Man isn't accounted for, plus the Fantastic Four and X-Men franchises on the way too.

Obviously there are a lot of TV shows coming to promote Disney+ but it's also smart that Marvel does this. Streaming is huge, and if they get it right they can conquer another big part of the market.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 9/10/2019, 8:50 AM
@Necropolitan - you have Moon Knight on there twice, so unless one of those is replacing something else, it’s not quite a 50/50 split even.

There is at least a question of production resources... that’s a lot of content to be made in a 2-3 year time span. People have assumed that the shows are going to be made with the same commitment/involvement given by Fiege and his team to MCU content before this, but surely that’s not exactly possible. It’ll be a test of Marvel’s talent bench to see if they can make this many different projects at once without a dip in quality.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 9/10/2019, 4:21 AM
@Necropolitan - Well the last 4 movies you mentioned weren't announced with a title card and probably won't be with us before all these TV shows. But my point is that Marvel is certainly pushing hard to diversify into TV

Spock0Clock

@Radders - Marvel Studios has been pretty leak-proof for a while. Maybe we're getting scuttlebutt because they're having to explicitly pitch these ideas to Disney's streaming team, and can't keep their cards close to their vest about them.

And, because they're pitches, some of them may not happen, that's true. But so far all of the widely rumored series have been officially announced. And (with only one exception with a lot of behind-the-scenes drama) Marvel Studios hasn't been in the officially-announce-then-cancel business.

We know that shows like Falcon and Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Hawkeye and Loki are limited shows right?

Is it the same with shows like She-Hulk, Moonknight, Ms Marvel etc.? Are these limited to one season?
Does anyone know?

It does make sense to introduce characters like Kate Bishop and Wiccan and then gather them in a Young Avengers series. I would have prefered a movie but Disney+ makes sense with movies based on the F4 and the X-Men on the way.
Darriann
Darriann - 9/10/2019, 4:59 AM
I think the best way for them to capitalize on these properties would be to do individual character shows, with a few crossovers and then bring them together for big events in theaters. It would flesh out the characters more and let audience's become more invested in each of them.

Imagine if that is how DC had handled the DCEU like that? We would be getting Crisis on the big screen instead of spread out across so many different shows with the final two episodes not airing over a month after the first three.Plus they would get bigger budgets for the crossovers.

ChrisRed
ChrisRed - 9/10/2019, 6:20 AM
@OmegaDaGrodd - Is there even main team anymore though? Cap, Iron Man and Widow are done. Probably Hawkeye too after his solo series.

Obviously, there're still plenty of Avengers but most of the core are done and the rest having moved to Disney+ (except Thor).
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 9/10/2019, 6:22 AM
@KWilly

Keep in mind that these aren't normal tv shows, so far we have only heard of them being limited series'. So they most likely won't run more than one season, except for the new solo characters like Ms Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight. Also they all may be transitioned into films at some point.

America Chavez? Please NO. Heck, I'm from Latin America and despise the character.

As for Young Avengers? IDK, OK I guess. Moon Knight is pretty much the only show I really care about.

Disney has a ton of properties - it’s interesting that they are mining Marvel this deeply.

I’d like to see them start a new Saturday Morning Cartoons style line-up with their IP - release new 2-hr blocks of cartoons every Saturday with new episodes of Scrooge McDuck, Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, Gargoyles, etc.
lawndart

Wish they'd flush out the main roster of other Avengers before diving into this. Although we're getting She-Hulk, Hercules (I hope they keep with his Olympian origins) and Black Knight, we haven't explored a number of others yet such as Tigra, Simon Williams, Jocasta, or Photon yet. Would have loved to see the first interactions between Hawkeye and She-Hulk from the books on film.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 9/10/2019, 8:43 AM
I’m sure that they’re working their way towards a young team, whether the line-up is more Champions, New Warriors, or Young Avengers (most likely a mix of them all), and yeah... putting “Avengers” in the title is the better way to go, certainly.

I do wonder with such a heavy line-up of shows in consideration and/or development if there’s any room for sequel miniseries should one prove to be a huge hit (not sure how you measure that on a new streaming service.)
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 9/10/2019, 9:03 AM
I think people may be getting a little overly concerned about the streaming output. We're probably talking 3-4 shows a year (at this stage none of them aimed at a multiple-season run). Along with Marvel's 2-3 films, this is the kind of expansion that a lot of people have been saying the studio was capable of. Plus, it solves the real problem Marvel had with expanding: cinema logistics. Theaters can only support a limited number of huge blockbusters. Maybe there's a bit more room with Fox's X-Men gone, but I've been waiting and hoping for Marvel Studios to make the real shift toward a shared multimedia universe.

TV via a subscription model has been capable of medium-budget movie-quality content for a while now. It was time to see if it could stretch to the biggest budgets, too. (And pessimistically, I personally don't know that it can, in which case, this is all an unsustainable gold-rush that will collapse, so we should enjoy it while it lasts.)

Young Avengers Assemble!

Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 9/10/2019, 9:30 AM
Aw shit, I just realized something: there's a decent chance they may be aiming She-Hulk at a Young Avengers team, too, (to continue the mantle-shifting gimmick). And I've always aimed my fancasting at late-20's to mid-30's for maximum law drama appeal.

Maybe She-Hulk will be on the young side, too. More a paralegal than a confident litigator in her own right. Not sure how I feel about the prospect, but I'm not exactly hating it (but I will miss the lost opportunity of having a Hulkling).

Also, if America Chavez and Jen really are being aimed at shouldering the mantles of Cap and Hulk, it really is shaping up to be a very female-heavy team. Others have mentioned it before, but the "supergirl effect" may be organically moving us toward the heavily-female team movie anyway.

(The Supergirl Effect being the relatively common phenomenon of male heroes having younger distaff counterparts. Sure, there are a handful of younger male counterparts, too, but I think the Effect been fueled by the desire of artists, writers, and fans to express the mostly-repressed-but-hypersexualized elements of superheroes in a heterosexually safe space by putting their costume, or a skimpier variation of it, on a female form. Note the relative dearth of a similar younger-male-counterparts-to-female-characters. They exist, but much less prominently.)
