Despite the fact that we recently heard Batgirl is one of the next projects Warner Bros. will be focusing on, the movie lost its writer and director last night when Joss Whedon decided to walk away from the DC Comics adaptation. He claimed it was a result of not having any ideas for the story but it probably has something to do with what happened to Justice League and moviegoers would prefer a female creative team working behind the camera for a film revolving around a character like Barbara Gordon.
While the studio is now looking for a woman to direct Batgirl, the movie may have found a writer in a very unexpected place. Author Roxane Gay penned the World of Wakanda comic book for Marvel which was praised for its prominent portrayal of LGBTQ characters. She's also penned The New York Times best-selling essay collection Bad Feminist and books like An Untamed State and Hunger.
Last night, she offered to write Batgirl and received a response from Michele Wells, Vice-President of Content Strategy at DC Entertainment. There's nothing to say this will amount to anything but it's very interesting and kind of unbelievable that the company is essentially willing to talk to whoever throws their name into the hat on social media. If she's a good fit, though, this may be no bad thing! We'll have to wait and see but be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
