AT&T's $85.4 Billion Acquisition Of Warner Bros. Is Now Complete But What Does That Mean For DC?

AT&T's acquisition of Time Warner - the parent company of Warner Bros. and DC Comics - is now official but where does that leave characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman? Here's what we know...

It's been in the offing for a while but yesterday, AT&T's massive $85.4 billion acquisition of Time Warner was made 100% official. It took a long time thanks to a government approval process which saw a federal judge have to decide whether or not the purchase could go through. With the green light given on Tuesday, though, the deal has been officially announced and AT&T now owns Warner Bros.

"The content and creative talent at Warner Bros., HBO and Turner are first-rate," said Randall Stephenson, chairman and CEO of AT&T Inc. in a statement yesterday. "Combine all that with AT&T’s strengths in direct-to-consumer distribution, and we offer customers a differentiated, high-quality, mobile-first entertainment experience. We’re going to bring a fresh approach to how the media and entertainment industry works for consumers, content creators, distributors and advertisers."

What this means for the DCEU currently remains to be seen. Top executives at Warner Bros. and DC leaving is inevitable as AT&T will look to bring in some new people and a change in leadership across the board is expected (some high ranking executives could be safe but only if it's decided that they've been doing a good job so far). The question is. will Walter Hamada remain in charge of DC's movies?

Based on what we've heard, that seems likely, especially as it sounds as if he's been doing a great job putting the DCEU back on track. Then again, AT&T may have its own ideas for what should happen to these characters so we'll just have to wait and see. For now, though, stay tuned to CBM for updates.

Reboot, with each hero using an at&t cell phone to communicate. Their love for at&t is why they form the JLA.

Either they'll make some big decisions - or some big decisions will be made for them.

AT&T is an American telecommunications company that has a net worth is $200 billion.

Profit from comic book movies or any movie is pennies to AT&T. It takes to much man power.

Internet and streaming is where they made their 200 billion while sitting their Yachats not making comic book movies

I am hoping for return to the formula and characters that made the DC brand great prior to 2014. Everything after that should be retconned out and the studio should restart from there with the films that existed from 2005 to 2013.

@Forthas - Are you cool with Wonder Woman at least sticking around?

@EskimoJ - Don't get me wrong, I liked Wonder Woman, but that version is hamstrung with a bunch of narrative issues that even Patty Jenkins seems to be trying to get from under. It would be a shame to waste a lot of what Patty did in the first film but at the same time continuing down that path is hurting this franchise overall. I think they should just reboot it and quite frankly choose another actress who can carry the film a bit better.

Narratively, you can see Patty is having to come up with extraordinary ways to bring back Steve Trevor, completely ignore what Wonder Woman stated about not being active for 100 years, and maybe even changing her wardrobe, all because in BVS that stuff was made cannon that Steve Trevor died and Wonder Woman had not done anything for a century. That storyline followed into the Wonder Woman solo film so you can't use the film in a redux because so much of it is centered around the events outlined in BvS.

The second thing is that in my opinion, Chris Pine carried that fist film. I think Jenkins recognized that which was another reason why Pine was needed to return. If they did reboot, I could probably live with Gadot as Wonder Woman but I also feel there are stronger actresses out there and if the opportunity came where you could transition to another more capable actress, you might as well take it.

@Forthas - "return to the formula and characters that made the DC brand great prior to 2014." You mean a Batman universe where nobody has superpowers?
Forthas
Forthas - 6/15/2018, 6:09 AM
@YoloSwaggins812 - Man of Steel was in 2013...Superman has superpowers!

@Forthas - Yes, Superman did have superpowers. However Nolan's Batman is what made the DC brand great again, not Man of Steel. Besides, don't you always say that the foundation should be built on TDK trilogy AND Man of Steel? Well one has superpowers, the other doesn't.

@YoloSwaggins812 -

"Well one has superpowers, the other doesn't."

RIGHT! Which is EXACTLY the way it is in the comic book source materials! I HOPE you are aware that Batman has no super powers!

@Forthas - My biggest issue with a reboot is you have a really good Wonder Woman and Superman. I'd hate to see them retconned. Poor Cavill has been given the shaft. I still think Man of Steel was a great movie. I think DC just needs to have someone force them make a real plan. If they are going to do a cohesive/connected universe, plan it out appropriately. If not, just make everything one-offs like they do with their animated offerings. I do NOT want one-offs along with a connected universe. It just doesn't make sense. Marvel is doing great because of their master plan, but also because you have the same actors in their roles...the audience builds relationships and are more connected if you have the same actor.

@Philvis - EXACTLY MY FRIEND!!!!

Wonder Woman is a bit complicated. When I look at the films that can exist without the rest of the DCEU films then Man of Steel fits. I think it is a really good movie, it has a few issues but otherwise I think it is the most underrated CBM ever made.

Wonder Woman's narrative is intricately tied to the other DCEU films. The first solo film harkens back to her conversation with Bruce Wayne in BvS. In addition the tone is different...more akin to Justice League rather than Man of Steel. So I would not cry if Wonder Woman was left out of a reboot. I think that they wasted an opportunity to really define her in the film which could have had a lasting positive effect. So a reboot could better define her.

MY BET is another studio will offer to by the DC characters from AT&T for billions.

AT&T don't want to make movies they want to stream movies for 6 dollars a pop :)
WarnerBrother
WarnerBrother - 6/15/2018, 4:59 AM
@DoubleD -

That is some serious wishful thinking on your part.

If AT@T doesn't "want to make movies, they want to stream movies
for 6 dollars a pop" why wouldn't they just sell off Warner Bros
as a whole?

Maybe because they are in the content business and WB/DC is a big source of content. Look at the new DC streaming service. That is a potential goldmine for [email protected] the DC content on Netflix like CWDC shows are going to be pulled and put on that.

In time,you won't have shows like Gothem or Krypton on broadcast networks.

They will all be on the DC streaming service. And you think AT@T would just peel that off WB and sell it before the ink on the merger is dry?

If they sold it to another studio (For the love of god don't say Disney) they would be trying to lease the rights to whatever shows
and movies were made for their streaming service.
DoubleD
DoubleD - 6/15/2018, 5:04 AM
@WarnerBrother - AT&T Likes to stream movies already made. AT&T CEOS don't want to sit in hot movie studios all day and dealing with actors.

If AT@T doesn't "want to make movies, they want to stream movies
for 6 dollars a pop" why wouldn't they just sell off Warner Bros
as a whole?
WarnerBrother
WarnerBrother - 6/15/2018, 5:11 AM
@DoubleD -

They wouldn't have to deal with actors. You buy the studio
and wait for the profits to come in. If the studio makes movies that tank, they fire the studio head and find some one else who can work with actors, directors, writers and so on.

When Time bought WB they didn't expect to actually run the studio,
they hired guys to do it for them.

@DoubleD - at this point, [frick]ing sell to Disney.

That’s how bad they failed.

I used to be so happy that we were getting a comic universe that wasn’t Disney or fox. Way to go guys.

@BloodyBed @doubled- this deal more than likely means jack .All I expect is at&t offering discounts on that dc streaming service, which is the most they’ll likely do.
