BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES Star Kevin Conroy Agrees That Christian Bale's Batman Voice Was Weird

In a surprising move for the usually positive or nothing Kevin Conroy, while at MCM Comic Con the Batman: Arkham Asylum voice-actor disparaged Christian Bale's Batman voice in The Dark Knight Trilogy...

While the debate as to who portrayed the Bill Finger and Bob Kane created Batman best continues with each subsequent movie, when the conversation extends outside of live-action few can argue that the definitive interpretation of the character comes in the form of Kevin Conroy who voiced the detective in Bruce Timm and Paul Dini's Batman: The Animated Series.

For many, no other actor has perfectly performed or understood the character more than Conroy, which makes his opinion on former and subsequent inhabitants of the iconic role highly regarded. The consummate professional, Conroy never speaks ill of his fellow cowled thespians but that doesn't mean he won't also point out elements that didn't work for him.

Which is exactly what the actor did at MCM Comic Con when rather fittingly for Conroy, he revealed that he thought the voice adopted by Christian Bale in the Chris Nolan directed Dark Knight Trilogy was "weird" stating:

What can I say? It sounded like he had laryngitis. But he does Bruce Wayne, my god, he nails Bruce Wayne. He’s a terrific actor. Did you see American Psycho? I mean, he’s a wonderful actor. But his voice was weird as Batman.

This isn't an original critique of Bale's performance and one that has followed the actor since 2005's Batman Begins becoming the butt of a great many jokes in the years since. This was perhaps partly a reason why the following interpretation of Batman, played by Ben Affleck in Batman v Superman opted for a voice modulator built into the suit.

What do you think? Was Bale's voice too much as Batman? Were there other elements of his performance that didn't work for you? Leave your thoughts below.

If we're doing the "Batman's voice is a result of electronic modulation" thing nowadays then can Kevin Conroy just voice every live-action Batman.

@Nightwing1015 - Kevin Conroy should just be Batman at this point.

Yeah Bale's Batman voice was pretty stupid, but I understand the need to disguise. Still the best live action Batman, though.

@Brave -man that Batman Begins suit. Hands down, best live-action Batsuit.

@Brave -
What's even weirder is that Christian Bale actually did an awesome Conroy-like Batman voice in the Batman Begins video game. Why didn't he use it in the movies?

My personal favourite is the Ben Affleck costume, though I wouldn't mind a more classic-styled live action costume in the future.

@Brave - I thought his voice in Begins was pretty good. Dunno what the hell happened with TDK though.

Could see why some would think its weird, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is bad, it is simply another take on the character, and surely one that will not be forgotten.

This coming from someone who can go without seeing Batman on screen for the next few years or another version in the near future.

I agree. It was like he couldn't say a few words without running out of breath. His batman kind of sucked but the movies were good. The dark knight is a tad overrated I thought begins was better.

The real question is which voice was sillier, Batman's or Bane's?

The modulated Batman voice is so dumb.

Conroy has the benefit of being able to tweak the tone of his voice incredibly well.

I think future cinematic Batmen should work on being able to modify their own voices in interesting ways.

@BlackBeltJones - I don't know. His Batman didn't sound much different from his Bruce Wayne to me. Just a little deeper. Still great but I really don't get this.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 5/28/2018, 10:07 AM
@Origame - you're right, it was obviously just deeper and with a growl. It worked enough for the show though.

I've always felt that Batman should be a hero of FEW WORDS and those few words are almost like growling whispers.

I really like what Cox does with his voice when he's suited up as Daredevil. Not that he really needs to alter his voice much with Matt not being a noticeable public figure.

And his laugh is genuinely scary. PERFECT.

@BlackBeltJones - Funny thing, that's what Bruce Wayne did in Batman Begins with his proto-Batman get up talking to Gordon. Maybe THAT'S what they should have kept.

Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 5/28/2018, 12:17 PM
@Origame - Being a voice actor, he used to voice them as two different characters on BTAS. It wasn't so much that his voice sounded all that different, it was the way he talked was completely different... far more affable, far less intense as Bruce Wayne.

When they did the redesign in later years, they dropped the "Bruce Wayne" voice and he used the same one for both Batman and Wayne for the most part.

Origame - 5/28/2018, 12:40 PM
@Chewtoy - Yeah I get that. But even in the early days hearing him talk, I could always tell this was the same guy. He's making it sound like it's so drastic but when I hear it, it's clearly meant to be the same guy.
99OPTIMISTPRIME
99OPTIMISTPRIME - 5/28/2018, 12:50 PM
@Origame - You mean basically whispering like Micheal Keaton did. The voice modulator makes the voice sound kinda weird too, just like the idea of a dude dressing up in a bat costume is TOTALLY weird. Bale and Nolan had their own logic for going with the intense out of breathe smokers voice. And just like with the costume, either the audience is willing to just go with, or they aren't.

99OPTIMISTPRIME
99OPTIMISTPRIME - 5/28/2018, 1:07 PM
@BlackBeltJones - Conroy also has the benefit of god giving him a deep, pure, and intelligent sounding voice, that happens to fit the image of how most fans imagine Batman would sound like. I get it. He wants to play to the audience, and agree with the popular opinion that Bale's Batman voice is comical. But he's GOTTA know that good fortune played a huge part in him being considered the definitive voice, of an iconic superhero. I wish he'd show a little more humility about that topic.

SisterSunday52 - 5/28/2018, 2:25 PM
@BlackBeltJones - This is why I thought Batman, I mean Ben Affleck, was the best Batman in live action. His voice as Batman was brilliant. It wasn't over the top, but you wouldn't really be able to tell it came from him either. Batman, I mean Kevin Conroy, was the only other Batman actor to do this successfully.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 5/28/2018, 9:59 AM
I've never minded the voice. It was a little odd when I first heard it, but it's grown on me. He's still my favorite live action Batman. Kevin Conroy, however, will always be my voice of the Batman. It's his voice I hear when I read the comics.

@noahthegrand - Same here. Having seen the Huey Lewis and the News scene, I feel that it would not only be an interesting film to watch but, in comparing it to Trailer Park's Suicide Squad, I think it would do a good job in demonstrating how poor editing can ruin a performance.

@blitzburgh - to me it didn't. It was a conclusion to Nolan's story. Beginning (Batman begins),middle (tdk), n ending with tdkr. From a story telling perspective it fit his trilogy so yes I enjoyed the/his conclusion to the series. Sue me. Haha
