Bo-Katan Actress Katee Sackhoff Wants To Play POISON IVY But Thinks Karen Gillan Will Get The Role Bo-Katan Actress Katee Sackhoff Wants To Play POISON IVY But Thinks Karen Gillan Will Get The Role

Just as rumors of a Poison Ivy movie emerge, more and more actresses are suddenly expressing a desire to portray the eco-terrorist.

Back in Spring, rumors surfaced that James Gunn and Peter Safran's newly created DC Studios was looking to develop solo movies for Batman rogues Clayface and Poison Ivy.

Although Clayface and Poison Ivy projects were not announced during Gunn's YouTube video revealing the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate, he later confirmed via Twitter that the video announced less than half of all the projects they are currently planning to develop.

Shortly thereafter, actresses Katee Sackhoff and Karen Gillan both voiced a desire to play Poison Ivy in separate interviews.

It seems Sackhoff eventually caught wind of Gillan's wish and recently admitted that while she still wants the role, Gunn is more likely to choose Gillan due to their connection from Guardians of the Galaxy.

"No, I haven’t [talked to James Gunn]," Sackhoff stated about her previous comments on Poison Ivy [via Cinemablend].

"Listen, I saw Karen Gillan wants to play her, too. And, like, she’s got a closer ‘in’ than I do, so I feel like that’s a given. I feel like I’ve got no horse in that race if Karen wants to play that character, but God, I love her. I can’t be mad at her. She’s fantastic, and I love her dearly, so I still would love to, for sure."

With less than half of the Gods and Monsters slate announced, do you think Warner Bros. is likely to develop such a project? The character was poorly depicted in 1997's  Batman & Robin by the otherwise, incredibly talented Uma Thurman.

Perhaps it's time for WB to revisit the character and take a more serious approach to the villain's origin and motivations?

As much as I like both actresses, I do think they should get someone younger to play Ivy.

While I love Ivy and Clayface, I don't really think they need their own movies. I'd much rather have them be villains in Bat-movies.

Once again the CEO of DC is faced with choices which are:

1) James Gunn seek out a strong actress to lead the IP who earns the role through audition and a body of work that shows off her fit for the role.

2) He hires his friend!

Which one of these are more likely to happen? Hmmm I wonder!

Congratulations to Karen Gillan on the role she will be offered. Nice to see a studio head support meritocracy.

@Forthas - Is both not an option?

@Forthas - From Orson Welles to Martin Scorcese to the Coen Brothers to Wes Anderson, great directors have often cultivated "companies" of actors that they work with over and over again. Gunn is one such director. This is normal. Everything's okay.
Forthas

@EskimoJ - Sure! But one is in service to the fans and the company that employe him to best position it to be successful.

The other is self serving.

@ClintThaHamster - Normal does not mean OK. I am sure in all forms of corporate America it is a normalized activity. That does not mean we should celebrate or tolerate it NO MATTER WHO DOES IT!

It is anti-free market and is corrosive to obtaining the best quality product or service.

@Forthas - You are missing the fact that an actress that the head honcho has successfully worked with before has huge advantages that relate directly to the finished product. A new actress is MUCH RISKIER.
Forthas
Forthas - 8/20/2023, 3:04 PM
@JDL - So what traits does he see in casting her on a role in the Guardians series that in no way shape or form is like the character he is now casting for. Using your logic, why not cast Chris Pratt as Superman. Forget about if he fits the role. It is less risky because he and Gunn are friends and they worked well together before.

@Forthas - What does it matter if the actor does a good job in the role though? As well as the directors well known for doing this like @ClintThaHamster mentioned above there's many more that also frequently use the same actors such as Christopher Nolan and Tim Burton. I guess like any working environment, if you develop a good working relationship with someone then why not keep that going? If a role that is suitable for them comes up then it would make sense to want to use them. I don't think it's 'self serving', I think it's smart using an actor you know and trust to get the job done. Regardless of that though, Karen Gillan wouldn't be a bad choice for Ivy if she ever gets used in the new DCU. She certainly looks the part.

@Forthas - You're aware that being friends with Gunn and having the talent to play Poison Ivy aren't two mutually exclusive things, right ? They can definitely overlap.

It's also not like Poison Ivy is this super complex character that only one in a billion actresses could play, i'm sure Karen Gillan has all the range necessary.
Forthas
Forthas - 8/20/2023, 6:21 PM
@bcom - Some actors play the role better than others. One might think that Jack Nicholson (who DID NOT audition for the role of Joker)is cleary an easy choice to make for someone to play that role. But we now see that a young actor named Heath Ledger nobody ever imagined at the time could pull of the character delivers the best perfromance perhaps in any comic book genre. The diiference is getting a good performance versus getting a great one.

Like I stated above, it is wrong when anyone does it incluing christopher Nolan and Tim Burton.

"I think it's smart using an actor you know and trust to get the job done."

There is an old adage that you should not work with friends and family, in part because your judgement of them is biased. Sure Karen Gillan may be a good choice. But is she the best choice. You have to see through auditions and the body of work if that is the case. She might be a consideration but I am not sure if she would be my first choice.
Forthas
Forthas - 8/20/2023, 6:26 PM
@OrgasmicPotatoe - They are not mutually exclusive, but if that actress is THAT good then why not test it by looking at other actresses and comparing their auditions. If she is as good as the drector thinks she will stand out and if not you will find your next Health Ledger hopefully.

No Poison Ivey is not that complex, but that is not to say she could not or should not be. That is what would make a film about her more layered. But I guess given who the team behind the production, that may be too much to ask for. They will probably just need someone who can do fart-jokes and dance-offs. So maybe she is perfect.
bcom
bcom - 8/20/2023, 6:50 PM
@Forthas - But it's not like these directors only use an exclusive select number of actors for every movie. Case in point is your example of Heath being cast as the Joker by Nolan. As I mentioned, Nolan is a director that has a regular roster of actors he works with, but that doesn't mean he'll use one if he knows another actor is better suited for the role. Katie saying that Karen would likely be cast over her as Ivy doesn't mean that Gunn would cast Karen if he thought another actor was better suited to the role. Look at his casting for Superman and Lois Lane, both are actors he's never worked with before. But, if an actor that a director has worked with in the past does seem perfect to fill a role then it kinda makes sense to use them.
Forthas
Forthas - 8/20/2023, 9:10 PM
@bcom - The fact that Katie is saying that she thinks Karen will get the opportunity BEFORE a director or script is even in place is even more egregious. The example you gave of Christopher Nolan is done in his role as director. If Gunn has made a decision about the role without any input from a director assuming it is not him is atrocious and blatant cronyism.

Oh, right! The notion that Gunn just so happens to cast yet ANOTHER friend of his because she is the only one who is capable of portraying the role is garbage. Anyone who believes that deserved to be suckered by Gunn.

“Look at his casting for Superman and Lois Lane, both are actors he's never worked with before.”

Yeah! Look at that! Both of these actors should be front an center in a “SUPERMAN” film but now have to share screen time with Gunn’s friends and family who are being stuffed in the film. That’s a great example of how cronyism leads to what could be a very bad decisions.
bcom
bcom - 8/20/2023, 10:17 PM
@Forthas - Honestly, I think you're blowing it a bit out of proportion. The only Gunn regular officially cast in Superman Legacy is Nathan Fillion, and the two main stars are front and centre in all the media reports about it.

Given that Gunn will serve as producer on many of the DCU projects (sure, he'll likely direct some) it'll ultimately be up to the director of each project to cast their movies, just like with the MCU.

@Forthas - "here is an old adage that you should not work with friends and family, in part because your judgement of them is biased."

That usually depends on which came first; the professional relationship or the personal one. If it's the latter most often your adage has a great deal of merit.

@Forthas - The things I was looking at were things like how was she to work with ? Did she play well with others ? Was she a fast study ? Could she pivot easily if the script changed ? Did she have any health issues ? Did she have any good or bad realtionships with other actors or actresses that were being considered ?

@Jrazz - Realistically, Karen Gillan would probably be 40 when any potential movie is shot.

I'm sure she'll still be gorgeous but imo Ivy is one of those characters that never really age always appearing, I don't know... 25-32 years old...

Gillan must have been in her mid 20s when Guardians was casted. No reason Ivy can't be casts in the same age range.
