Christopher Nolan attended the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Film Festival last night, where he not only screened his films Insomnia and The Dark Knight, but stuck around for a lengthy Q&A. Courtesy of Collider.com, here are some of the highlights:

- Nolan prefers to use practical effects, in most cases, before resorting to digital effects and told a story about choosing between the two on Batman Begins. He said that effects are better when artists can match something real.

- His favorite scene in The Dark Knight is the interrogation, because the lighting was so technical and it brought together many of the main players in the cast. They filmed it during the second week so that Heath Ledger would have a good, meaty scene to use for the rest of the shoot. He also said they couldn’t have done the scene with the suit used in Batman Begins because it wouldn’t have looked good under that particular lighting; and that it was the first scene where we finally get to see a Batman driven by rage.

- LA Times writer, and the event's host, Geoff Boucher asked Nolan about the Superman reboot, though it was probably “too early to talk about things. He said he’s strictly on it as a producer and he retold the story of David Goyer pitching him this great idea. He wouldn’t say what the idea was but said he knew he had to help get it done.

- Batman Begins was directly inspired by Richard Donner's Superman and Nolan pitched it as such. He called the Burton [Batman] film “mad” and said Donner’s structure and ensemble casting helped influence Begins. He believes that cast is the reason many of the superhero movies now have huge actors in all the small parts.

- Geoff Boucher asked Nolan if he was amused when reading about his own casting on the internet. Nolan got a strange look on his face and said he doesn’t look at the internet; he added that he doesn’t even have an email or cell phone. He learned early on in the Begins process that it wasn’t a good idea to look at what the fans say. He did joke about the Cher rumor though and said the studio has called him and alluded to the fact they read those things.

- He was completely surprised at the success of The Dark Knight and said its success was due to a number or reasons including Heath Ledger. Another factor was that people were nervous about Batman Begins, because of the previous film in the franchise, and the idea of a reboot was foreign at the time. By the time <>The Dark Knight came out, people trusted it more.

- Nolan is not a fan of 3D. He feels the image is too dark and it hasn’t really gotten to the right place technologically yet for him to consider. They did post production tests for Inception, which he liked, but they didn’t have enough time to convert the whole film to his high standards. He added that shooting in 3D is way too much of a compromise of the image, and gave a bunch of very technical examples. The most interesting thing, though was Nolan said if he was to do a film in 3D, he believes the way to do it best is in post production.

Nolan's third, and final, Batman film will begin filming next March and is slated for a tentative release date of July 20, 2012. To read more of Nolan's thoughts on his past and present films, including Inception and The Prestige, follow the link below to Collider.com

MPP - It's surprising to me that Nolan actually prefers a post-production 3D treatment as opposed to filming in 3D; which has been proven time and time again to be the best way to execute use of the technology. Also, I'm not too sure what Nolan meant by insinuating Tim Burton's Batman films were "mad," but the comment really didn't come across as complimentary. Oh well, Mr. Nolan; to each his own.

Per Burton's version: I think it's obvious those were more about imagery than story. The second one was really "Catwoman & Penguin" without an ending. It meandered into the ether. I was entertained, but not nearly as much as watching the first Superman.
I think it's great he doesn't want to do 3-D. One hugely successful film and all of the new ones need to be in 3-D? That's silly. Critics have said that 3-D didn't help "Clash of the Titans" (done in post production).

Nolan is an older styled director, he's one of the few. I don't want him to change but if He's going to do Superman, he better be doing some good digital effects work, lol.

I really don't care who is going to be in the next Batman, all I know is that it will be great with Chris at the helm... and that I will be at the movies on it's open day. :)

Can't wait for some real Superman news. Everything's in place except for a director - and that's when JJ Abrams should come in.

Tim Burton's films were mad. Jihad penguins and duck boat. Burton's Batman was like gothic fantasy.

Currently filming in 3D creates better results, but that's what Nolan means when he said technology isn't up to par yet. If post-production can look as good, then it's actually better because a director will have more control over what pops out and how much.

@Flurb Nolan isn't "older styled". He just goes with what works and looks best at the moment. He's not a luddite director. TDK had CGI. It says he did 3D tests for Inception, so he's obviously not against 3D either. The post-production technology he prefers just isn't ready to be used for a polished film.

Hopefully Inception will nab him the 'Best Director' Oscar he clearly deserves! The Dark Knight and The Prestige are just two of his movies that should have earned him that IMO! I cant wait for Batman 3! :) Really interesting find MULTI!

I still much prefer Burton's films to Nolan's and that's both of them! Just felt a lot more like Batman. Anyway I still loved BB and TDK so I'm looking forward to Batman 3...just not Bale...apart from him though the franchise is Golden.

Nolan should really go back to his roots in Batman 3. Less Chicago, more sets. I wan't to see the Narrows, and Arkham Asylum again. Gotham was too damn "clean" in TDK (though I understand why).

@ Ryden. Seriously, Burton's films felt more like Batman. Don't get me wrong I loved the films too but you had a Batman that was blowing up chemical plants with people in it, shooting at the joker in the Batwing and stuffing bombs down the pants of penguin's goons. Anyway, I would like to see the Detective side of Batman in the third film. Maybe we won't know who the riddler is until the end of the movie or more like sherlock holmes where Batman has to figure out how the crimes are being committed.

I prefer Nolan's grounded Batman over the more zany halloweeny interpretations. That's not what Batman is about in my eyes.

Jon Favreau said Batman Begins was an inspiration in making Iron Man. So how's Nolan DC's Favreau? Favreau is more like Marvel's wannabe Nolan.

mexinaco@ Get a life and quite whining!

Check out various news sites on the web and see how much "recycling" of new that goes on. Yahoo posts the same articles as MSN, USA Today, Washington Post, AZ Central and the list can go on. Multi posted the source, just like all the other mentioned news sites do when they re-share news. At least, Multi comments on the articles and he has many exclusives and scoops on this site that other sites don't have based on his investigative and digging skills.

flames809@ Theres info on when Batman 3 is going to be filmed and released and there was a question and comment on the Superman reboot.

every time I read quotes by Nolan he comes off as a douche, he sounds like he hates almost everything and only like the opposite of what everyone else wants or likes.

Nolan doesn't like the idea of Batman and Superman in the same universe but everyone wants that, he hates filming in 3D but it has been proven to be the better process, "his" Batman has to be based in reality which will exclude a lot of villains that fans want to see because they are not "reality" based, no Robin. The no Robin thing is actually kind of a torn subject some people think it can be pulled off others don't want him to even try, I myself think Nolan could make it work.

"It's not a good idea to see what fans are saying"..ugh..I guess it works for him..but what a stupid and greedy thing to say. We ("fans") were reading comic books a VERY long time before that idiot was even born. I understand he needs to make a movie, and that involves adding elements that might not be what "fans" want...but damn. It's nice to know he doesn't give a shit what we have to say.

@ToughGrappler@ I never said Nolan made bad movies, I love both his films and the Burton movies were far from crappy...

it has been proven that Batman films can be made like the comics, it has also been proven that films can be made with what the fans want to see and keep it on pace for the non comic fans as in Iron man 1 and 2, the Incredible Hulk, Watchmen, Sin city, I can go on, it just takes the right kind of director and Nolan is an excellent director and I think he could pull it off, I just don't think that it's far to the non comic fans to have to miss out on great characters just because Nolan refuses to use them and go the "reality" route.
fanboiii
fanboiii - 6/13/2010, 10:39 AM
Before anyone assumes anything about what Nolan won't do, think about that fact that Nolan is going to save the Superman franchise. Did anyone see that coming or expect Nolan to be involved with Superman in anyway?

You're hating on Nolan just because he hasn't promised a crossover? As much as people want Nolan to be DC's work horse, that's just not fair to him. It's like how Guillermo Del Toro got crammed with all these projects that people expect him to do. Fanboys have no limits. Nolan does. Besides, Nolan has never ruled a crossover out completely.

"It's not something I ever applied a blanket rule to"

@ osiris - Agreed, i mean god knows i love the work he does, And i really do understand why he doesn't want to hear the words of the fans (cause some of us are crazy) But i always felt that it's just one of those things that comes with the territory of a comic book film, you have to hear out the fans and take in some of their input. Kinda hurts knowing he doesn't care, lol. But at least he does a good job, so can we really complain....probably not. We should probably just shut up and be happy knowing that there will be a Batman 3 and it will be damn good.

Burtons films are mad. That's generally what you get when watchng one of his films, which I think is why he was perfect for Alice in Wonderland

fanboiii - 6/13/2010, 11:21 AM
Yeah, and a lot will change in terms of comic book movies once Man of Steel gets made, because if Avengers turns out good then that'll up the ante. Marvel and DC are ready to make these movies. WB wouldn't have made DC it's own entertainment division if they didn't intend on making more movies. Crossovers are practically inevitable.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 6/13/2010, 11:53 AM
Anil@ While I agree with you on Superman being done right, the way things keep being rebooted, they might as well setup a crossover as Superman is never going to get anywhere if they don't tie him into the JLA. It may be the only saving grace for the continuity of Superman and Batman. I think Marvel gets that with their characters. DC needs to catch up.

Now Geoff Johns is tweeting that DC is looking at a Blue Beetle live action movie and have gone as far as doing first stage development tests on how Reyes would activate his suit. Why don't they focus on some of their main characters that are more marketable than characters like the Blue Beetle? Hello? Flash...Wonder Woman...I don't get it.
Newbe
Newbe - 6/13/2010, 1:25 PM
@suffertree

why is it stupid and greedy? I'm sure the last thing he wants to do is read comments from a bunch of people he doesn't even know, telling him what he should do with his movie. if he listened to everything the fans would have to say it would fill his head full of nonsense and distract from his vision.

also for the crossover thing, i think people are putting to much weight on the crossover. we have yet to see the avengers, and as far as i can tell from marvel movies it might come out like crap.
