Could The Riddler Be The Main Villain In The Dark Knight Rises?

What if the biggest casting news for the the DARK KNIGHT RISES is Joseph Gordon Levitt and not Hardy as Bane or Hathaway as Selina Kyle.

We have to remember Christopher Nolan is the king of misdirection. You see it in his movies and you hear (or in some case not hear because he does not like to divulge anything about his movie) it in the news.

Think of this Bane or Catwoman do you really think they really pose a threat to Batman or Gotham. Bane is not too recognizable to a common movie goer to think much of him as the main villain (He is smart and he is strong but not that iconic, not in the level or near the level of Joker). Catwoman, if ever, does not cause that much of a threat considering the one made by Ra's (Burning Gotham to the ground - figuratively) and Joker (Making Chaos).

So, I think you need a masterplanner. Someone who can orchestrate some clever mayhem. You could have Bane or Catwoman as the moving force or pawns but in the end you need a big reveal and that is Joseph Gordon Levitt as the RIDDLER (Who can create a lot of confusion).

Nolan can also go in this direction, though many may react badly to this, that this version of the RIDDLER can be related to the JOKER (explains the uncanny resemblance of Levitt with Ledger).

I found this old poster that might prove my point. I "think" its fanmade but it has not yet been proven beyond reasonable doubt, so this could be legit(?). But if this turns out legit, with its clever use of a Jokerman font for a question mark, then you heard it here we might be having RIDDLER as the BATMAN's main nemesis on DARK KNIGHT RISES.

By the way, I think Eckhart will be back as Two-face. I still have a feeling that he did not die on the last one. It seems like a fake death (like what they did with Gordon).

Bane would make a better villain then The Riddler. He's smarter then him, a better schemer, and is an actual physical threat to Batman as well, meaning better fight scenes. It's not like anyone knew who Ra's al Ghul was either.

There will be a heap of the rogues gallery all playing bit parts in order to draw a hidden batman out, wear him down in order for Bane to take him on.

Nightfall and then the Rise

I'd love the Riddler but I don't think three big well established villains would work, but hey Nolan prove me wrong.

In an ideal world I would have like:

Batman 3 Penguin and the Black Mask
Batman 4 Riddler and Harley Quinn
(Both well known character juxtaposed with lesser knowns).
With the Joker reappearing and Hugo Strange turning up at one point.

Do I think Riddler will appear in the film....No. But I can hope. Hugo Strange is more likely and I do like the idea of Robin Williams having a shot at an intelligent summer blockbuster.

At the end of the day if The Dark Knight Rises is the be the last of this string of Batman movies. I just don't think Catwoman and Bane are strong/interesting and good enough for a final climatic film. Though I could be wrong.

uh wtf? whats the wallpaper gotta do w/anything? besides since JGL looks like Heath he should be the recast of the Joker but just as a cliffhanger cameo. its time to let other villains get their shine

Yep especially considering Christopher Nolan actually said the Riddler will not be in The Dark Knight Rises

I would see him more as Alberto Falcone. The son of Carmine Falcone.

You make a really good point but I doubt it. I really wanted the Villians to be Riddler and Penguin though.

I think if Riddler will be in it, idk f JGL would be the best choice. Johnny Depp for the win.
And I know Nolan said Riddler won't be in it...but doesn't rule out a role with Nigma?

then who cares if edward nygma is in it? he'd just be a reporter or whatever....also Bane IS a master planner, moreso than the Riddler. and Nolan doesnt give a shit who in the moviegoing public knows who Bane is. He doesnt care about doing what people want, Nolan is telling the story that he wants to tell, and it is very clear that Nolan does not want the Riddler or Nygma or Nashton or whatever you want to call him in the movie

If Levitt plays a villan it should be Black Mask, I think it would be great because Black Mask has not been used in a live action Batman film plus he is a Crime Boss following in the lines of Falcony and Maronie. Black Mask would be the perfect villian to inherit that Crime Boss theme. But for all we know Levitt could play a good guy or some one we will say "who side is he on?" with Nolan you never know & that is what I like about Nolan, he is a terrific film maker! This movie is going to be huge! My biggest must see movie of 2012!

"We have to remember Christopher Nolan is the king of misdirection."

I don't know this misdirection of which you speak. He hasn't been any more devious with information than other directors.

JGL might be Black Mask, Jason Bard,Alberto Falcone or Azrael...

If I met you I would punch you in the face for writing this. Why, you ask? Well, I'll tell you why.

1. Christopher Nolan has said no Riddler. Finito
2. You underestimate the movie-going public's knowledge of comic books. They might not know storylines and exact source material, but it's not like Batman and Joker are the only two characters anyone knows.
3. Riddler sucks, stop trying.
4. That poster has jack squat in it. OOOOO a green question mark with a DC Comics and Legendary Pcitures emblems in the back. AND OMG IT'S TWO FACE'S COIN!!!!
5. Really?

That poster is OLD. It's been posted on here many many times. It's just fan-made BS.

...as far as Riddler being in the movie? It's still possible IMO. Nolan is notorious for using misdirection in his comments.

Everyone keeps talking about how Nolan is this trickster figure prone to lying to everyone.

What is with that? He's alwas been secretive, but when he said something it was true.

Nolan likes to keep his storied under wraps, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't tell the world the Riddler won't be in the movie and then just say he was lying a few months later. Since I've given up hope on the Riddler, I now hope that Hugo Strange will have a role in this.

Riddler and Bane Team up WOULD BE AWESOME, Especially since Tom Hardy and Joe had great "chemistry" in Inception. Riddler FTW!!!!! Come on Nolan make the Riddler the Villain!!!!

Frogman - 2/5/2011, 9:11 AM
Didn't he say that Aaron Eckhart would only be playing Dent and not Two-Face? and we all know (if you've seen the Dark Knight and a reasonable chance if you haven't) how that turned out. I say let Nolan do his thing. I like Riddler but its not the end of the world if he's not there.

He didn't say anything about Two-Face leading up to the movie, even when concept images of Two-Face makup were leaked.

id really like to see two-face, but thats NOT gonna happen. Nolan said he killed him.

and Joseph Gordon Levit is a great young actor, and any character that he's cast as im sure it will be awesome. i think Black Mask would be really cool. and itl be refreshing to see a villian thats not so well known, but still really cool, given a chance in a movie.
